BOURNEMOUTH CANINE ASSOCIATION CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW - PUGS

My thanks to the committee for the invitation to judge. We were first up, so avoided the extent of the heat in the afternoon, all dogs handled it very well and showed no signs of struggling. Thanks also to exhibitors for generously accepting the presence of student judge for a few of the classes in males.

Minor Puppy Dog

1st – Steel’s Kenaspire Slopeside Spritz

Just 6 months and quite raw, but promising. Liked his head and eye, lovely expression and good short and square muzzle with no exaggerations, nicely set ears. Nicely set and tightly curled tail. When settled, he moved well.

Puppy Dog

1st – Turnbull’s Nicobri's Suits You Sir

Quite mature for a 9-month-old, full of character and energy, in excellent muscular condition. Liked his head, round and in good proportion to body, sufficient wrinkle, good short and square muzzle, dark and expressive eyes. Strong neck and well-laid shoulders. High-set and well-carried, tightly curled tail. When settled he moved well.

2nd – Steel’s Kenaspire Slopeside Spritz

Repeat of Minor Puppy Dog.

Junior Dog

1st – Beech & Schofield’s Bubbapug Jelly Baby

Nicely balanced and masculine male in good condition. Head round and large with expressive and dark eyes, well-set, neat ears. Good strong neck. Would prefer a more level topline, high-set tail tightly curled, well-angled hindquarters. Moved steadily.

2nd – Butterstone’s Mopszawawa's Heartbreaker For Joshotto

Liked his head and expression, but a bit too long in body for balance. Nicely set and carried tail, in good muscular condition with strong and well-developed bone.

Post Graduate Dog

1st – Dawson-Payne & Mousley’s Judamie Birthday Bash

Nicely balanced, square and compact. In good condition with good bone. Nicely proportioned head, round with short and square muzzle, well-set ears. Strong neck, well-laid shoulders, but I’d prefer a bit more reach back of upper arm for balance. Strong and level topline that he maintains on the move. High-set and tightly curled tail. Moved with typical but unexaggerated roll, and covered the ground with ease.

2nd – Monk’s Roxmarr Grand Stand At Zoant

Nicely proportioned, good head but the wrinkle is a little exaggerated. Strong neck, well-laid shoulders. Moved well, maintaining his topline.

Limit Dog

1st – Makepeace’s Hugapug Guy Fawkes At Sandigara

Square and well balanced in construction, sound and moved well, though a little lethargic in today's heat. Nice head and eye, good strong neck. Well-laid shoulder. Good topline, high-set and tightly curled tail.

2nd – Hickey’s Paradiz Ronado Looney Tunes Maschio NAF

Liked his head and dark eye, with well-set and used ears. He is a tad long in back and this tends to dip a little on the move. High-set and tightly curled tail. Moved soundly.

Open Dog

1st – Pike, Pike, Hill & Mallinson’s Ch Eivisah Sonnentanz JW – DCC & BOB

Sound and well-built, decidedly square and cobby, with excellent proportions throughout. Correct head, large in proportion to body and round, with lovely dark, expressive eyes, well-set and carried ears and good pigment, short, square muzzle with sufficient wrinkle and no exaggeration. Strong neck, well-laid shoulders, strong and level topline, high-set tightly curled tail and well-angulated hindquarters. He was sound and coordinated on the move, with the typical Pug roll. His overall quality, balance and breed type carried the day. He really come into his own later in the Group, where he moved with great confidence and purpose.

2nd – Dawson-Payne & Mousley’s Ch Judamie Eltons Sun JW – RDCC

Another top-quality, masculine male, nicely proportioned and with much to admire. Head large in proportion to body, with dark expressive eyes and good wrinkle without exaggeration. Strong neck leading to well-laid shoulders, although I found him a little heavy through the shoulder. Good level topline, high-set and tightly curled tail and well-angulated hindquarters. Moved with a good typical roll and steady action. A very worthy Reserve Dog CC.

Veteran Dog

1st – Hickey’s Gio Do Gio Pep Guardiola (Imp Ita)

Nicely balanced overall. Good head and eye, short muzzle and good wrinkle with no exaggeration. Strong neck, well-laid shoulders. Good depth of chest, square body, high-set and tightly curled tail. Moved with typical action.

Special Beginners Dog or Bitch

1st – Ede-Rolfe’s Croftren All That Jazz – Best Special Beginner

Feminine bitch. Good pigmentation, dark and expressive eyes, well-laid shoulders, good length of rib, a bit long in loin casting her a bit too long overall. High-set and tightly curled tail. Moved well in profile.

Veteran Bitch

1st – Pike & Pike’s Ch Rhodenash Stella Dreams Of Eivisah JW – Best Veteran

Very stylish and confident 8-year-old. Sound and coordinated on the move with a good but unexaggerated roll. Head in good proportion to body, strong neck leading to well-laid shoulders. Strong and level topline. Square in outline, with good length of rib, high-set and tightly curled tail.

Junior Bitch

1st – Dawson-Payne & Mousley’s Judamie's Edith's Sunshine

Very sound and well built, in excellent condition. Liked her head, feminine and relatively large in proportion to body, lovely round and dark expressive eyes, well-set ears of good shape. Strong neck. Well-laid shoulder, strong and level topline that she retained on the move, high-set and tightly curled tail.

2nd – Makepeace’s Sandigara Hope And Dreams

Nice for overall shape and balance. Dark and expressive eyes, well-set and carried ears. Good strong neck. Well-laid shoulders. Strong and level topline, high-set tail. Moved with style, could be a little stronger in rear.

Yearling Bitch

1st – Eddery & Dawson-Payne’s Judamie Le Magnifique JW – BCC

A beautiful young bitch who impressed me more and more as the judging progressed. Very nicely balanced, compact and feminine. Good head with lovely large, round, dark eyes, short square muzzle and well-set ears. Good neck, carrying her head proudly, flowing into well-laid shoulders. Particularly admired her strong, level topline and the proportions of her body, giving the outline I was looking for. High-set, tightly curled tail. On the move she was sound and coordinated, with a good typical roll while retaining her shape. In the final challenge it was her combination of balance, squareness, femininity and soundness that won out.

Novice Bitch

1st – Mitchell & Crump’s Pigalle Absolute Cherry

Balanced decision, preferred the topline of 1. Liked her head, with dark mask, short and square muzzle. Large and expressive eyes. Strong neck leading to well-laid shoulders, good strong and level topline. High-set and tightly curled tail. Moved with typical Pug action.

2nd – Mitchell’s Pigalle Cherryade

Square and compact, good head and expression. Short and square muzzle. Good length of neck, well-laid shoulders, topline tended to curve a little over the loin. Tightly curled tail. Moved well.

Post Graduate Bitch

1st – Rutherford & Rutherford’s Mopszawawa's Wild Love With Potbelli JW

Cobby and well balanced overall. Liked her head very much, nicely proportioned to body, with short and square blunt muzzle. Large and expressive eyes. Good reach of neck with slight arch and carrying head proudly. Excellent topline, level, good spring and length of ribs, would prefer her loin a tad shorter. High-set and tightly curled tail. Confident and sound on the move.

2nd – Mitchell’s Pigalle Cherry Geloto Cedilla

Feminine and attractive bitch, rounded skull with dark and expressive eyes. Short and blunt muzzle. Well-laid shoulders, good spring of rib. Level topline, high-set and tightly curled tail. Moved well, with typical roll.

Limit Bitch

1st – Storey’s Rhodenash Kandoo Karousel JW – RBCC

A lovely compact, cobby, square and feminine bitch who pushed hard in the challenge. Delightful head, large and round but in correct proportion to body, with a short blunt muzzle and dark expressive eyes. Well-laid shoulder, level topline, good depth of chest and well-sprung rib. High-set and tightly curled tail and good rear angulation. Moved with sound, coordinated action. Her excellent construction and breed type earned her the Reserve Bitch CC.
