Basenjis

I would ask all breeders to consider the standard calls for elegance and at one time asked for gazelle like grace, although they are a hound breed their method of work cannot be created when they are overdone. I found size and shape differed from ideal in some cases and heavier heads are creeping in, diverging from the unique attitude that defines the breed, correct wrinkle is in part due to ear set and these wavered from correctly on top of the head to almost right angles from it. My mind goes back to some of the great dogs of the breed that I have known and been fortunate enough to own in some cases and that is in my mind when judging the breed. It is unique and does not need to be generalised into a generic small dog.

Minor Puppy Dog no entries

Puppy Dog 1 entry

1st Rossiter’s Mawali Goody Two Shoes – 9 month tri colour dog of decent size and shape, excellent colour and coat properties. Correct ratio leg to body making the desired leggy square. Nice eye shape and colour in attractive head showing some wrinkle with alert ears. Moved Well Best Puppy

Junior Dog no entries

Post Graduate Dog 2 entries

1st Oorloff’s Convica Lead the Way – Compact red and white, well made beautiful head showing profuse wrinkle, good ear set and size. Nicely made feet he moved well when settled pressed for consideration but could not organise himself moving in the final run off for higher honours.

2nd Palubicki’s Jessella Milo Sunfyre – unsettled on the table and unable to be presented stacked. Decent head and eye colour, he needs to develop in chest and would benefit from more depth when viewed from the front, rather flat footed and close behind on the move.

Limit Dog 1 entry

1st Oorloff’s Convica Fast and Furious – red and white of correct size, another from this kennel with an attractive head and showing desired wrinkle due in part to his correctly set ears, good eye shape with prominent pigment to frame them. Nice depth of chest. Feet flatter than his litter mate in the previous class ok on the move.

Open Dog 3 entries

1st Knights & Stokes Lelaps Time Lord - red and white. My mind’s eye remembers this dog as the one I was looking for from point of view of correct size and shape, not overdone but a male with deep chest and good angles all through. He has the correct strength of head with dark eyes, good ears and set and enough wrinkle, not overdone. Moved well with a swinging stride and ground covering movement. For me on the day he presented the Basenji picture I was looking for CC and BOB, I was delighted to watch him shortlisted in a strong Hound Group.

2nd Carrington’s Ch Int Ch Bushwacker Oceans Eleven – tri colour of finer make and shape which is correct but not as strong as I would like in a male, I would prefer a deeper chest. Nice head and eye shape leading into a good neck and shoulder placement, his ears sit a bit wide and so he was short of desired wrinkle on the day. Moved nicely with a swinging stride. RCC

3rd Williams & Wright’s Ch NI Ch Int Ch Mawali Going Four Gold

Veteran Bitch 2 entries

1st Holloway’s Aksafleet Russki Rose – red and white 9 and half year old in superb condition, nice head proportions showing wrinkle, nice short backed shape she moved well in this class but later in the challenge for best veteran she felt she had done enough for the day and lacked enthusiasm.

2nd Matthews Flugelberry Fizz Princess – brindle, another of 9 and half years, longer cast girl again lovely condition for age, nice close-fitting jacket but not showing the desired brindle colouring, low set ears lead to absence of wrinkle. Not as positive on the move as one.

Minor Puppy Bitch 1 entry

1st Clarke’s Maramoyo Moorland Misha –just short of nine months old, red and white elegant girl of correct shape, lovely head and eye with good ear set. She moved well and should mature into a lovely representation of the breed I was quite taken with her.

Puppy Bitch 2 entries

1st Addis Mawali It Takes Two with Savannastorm – 9 month red and white, slightly longer cast therefore not appearing square but overall good for size I found her head slightly heavier than my preference but she has dark eyes nicely shaped, head to neck showed some excess skin which spoiled the picture, lost out to litter brother in challenge due to that. Moved well, best puppy bitch.

2nd Clarke’s Maramoyo Moorland Misha

Junior Bitch no entries

Post Graduate Bitch 1 entry

1st Oorloff’s Convica Gold Fusion – red and white, nice head and ear set which showed in all three entries from this litter, dark eye with pigmentation showing. I found her coat a little more coarse than ideal, but she could be mid moult due to the time of year and all the bitches thinking about having their annual season. She is a little flat footed and moved wide behind.

Limit Bitch 2 entries

1st Knights & Stokes Lelaps River Song – red and white, lovely head showing correct properties, dark eye of attractive shape and pigmentation and well-set ears giving expressive wrinkle to complete the picture, a nice front with good angles through the shoulder. She is correct for height and build but lacks a little balance between her leg length and body to create the correct leggy square shape. Moved well.

2nd Holloway’s Aksalfleet Daydream Diana – red and white, finer in build than 1 and lacking in depth of body, good eye shape but wide ear set leads to lack of visible wrinkle. Unsettled on the move not striding out and short stepping.

Open Bitch 4 entries

1st Clinton’s Ch Akmar Napatan Gold for Westlawn JW – tri girl of taller stature but a nice leggy square shape with a deep chest, head with good wrinkle leads to an elegant clean neckline, moved well and a standout in the final line for CC

2nd Dunsdon’s Ch Mawali New York New York – red and white heavier built girl not so elegant in head as 1 but good eye and ear shape, loose skin between head and neck spoiled the outline and not the depth of chest for the square balance. Moved well and worthy in this entry of the RCC

3rd Oorloff’s Shyllar Rapt in Gold

Res Matthews Flugelberry Cherie Trifle - best veteran

Dee Hardy - Judge.
