Driffield Championship Dog Show

Thank you firstly to the committee for your invitation to judge my beloved breed. I was thrilled with the entry, which I was told was the largest of the year except for Crufts. My thanks to each and every exhibitor for not only your entry, but for the lovely atmosphere. To the couple of exhibitors who asked for additional time for their dogs, I was delighted they did so well for you. Thanks must also go to my stewards Carl and David. Stewards are the unsung heroes of our hobby, and I appreciated you gentlemen. Presentation was wonderful, with all exhibits shown in good condition. Coats were, as always varied, with some more full than others, but all well prepared. Outlines were on the whole excellent and toplines much improved from when I judged last. Rear angulation was varied, but I found sweep of stifle much improved. My largest area of concern was narrow hind movement. Some dogs going away showed no width at all, which, as they have correct width at the hip, could indicate a lack of rear muscle. I know this is a giant breed, but they are also a working dog and need this muscle. Tails, as always, continue to be a concern, but most are set on correctly, just used a little exuberantly, and most were of a lovely length.

I was delighted to stay to watch all main winners go in their respective groups and wow, didn’t they do well? The puppy was shortlisted (which is a huge thing for a slow-maturing breed in a beautiful group). BOB went a fabulous group 2. BV and Sp Beg both went group 3. Watching you with your huge rosettes made me very proud. Well done all.
