National Gundog Association
I would like to express my thanks to National Gundog for the opportunity to judge one of my favourite breeds and to the exhibitors who braved the weather to allow me the privilege of judging their dogs. Today I was reminded the joys that come with our hobby, to see an exhibitor be so delighted to win her first ever stud book number and having the privilege of giving the Bitch CC her crowning CC. However, I noticed that a proportion of the dogs did not have the correct feet or pasterns, these are the foundations on which the performance of the dogs depends when moving, especially when working. The feet and pasterns were developed for a purpose and we shouldn’t lose that. I did watch a number of exhibitors scratch the back of their pointers making the pointers drop, but what concerned me more were the welts in the skin visible on the dog’s backs created by this habit. Also, we should be mindful of the length of loin as in some cases this made for a soft topline and less positive movement.

From his flowing outline and drive on the move this boy fulfilled what I was looking for in a pointer. From his masculine head of good proportions, to his overall construction he just flowed, showing a series of curves. He had correct feet and sloping pasterns allowing him to move easily with drive. His well sprung ribs, short coupled presented a picture of a dog who could do a day’s work.

Smaller in frame than 1, but with a bit more substance. standing on good feet but the pastern was lacking. Topline ok, but tail carriage today let her down. Moved out well.

Typical in head, pleasing expression, construction ok. Just lacked a little drive on the move.
Limit Bitch 11,2 abs

Another feminine girl, her outline slightly marred by a little excess weight.
Open Bitch 8.1
A trio of well deserving bitches, each had something to commend them.
1st Place Kanix Skyfall (Mr & Mrs J Blackburn-Bennett) Bitch CC
This girl caught your eye as she entered the ring, she is so feminine in her appearance, well proportioned head, defined stop. Balanced fore & aft, with correct oval bone and feet. A pleasure to go over, everything flows, nothing jarring to eye or hand. On the move she covered the ground well, even with the difficult ground conditions, it didn’t bother her at all. It helps to have correct foot and pastern construction. Presented in great condition
2nd Place Sh Ch Sniperay Edge of Glory JW (Mrs J Radcliffe)
Another quality bitch, long muscular neck with long sloping shoulders, overall, well balanced, Short coupled, when moving she coped with the ground conditions, her slightly sloping pasterns and correct feet showed her drive and coverage.
3rd Place Fowington Lar Ti Dar at Deadaway Sgwc (Mrs J M Blowers)
This girl made up this fabulous trio, a little different in style but had all the attributes of a well-balanced pointer, fit for function. For me it was a difficult balancing act. Just a little untidy in front movement today.
