Critique

Thank you to the Officers and Committee of the East Anglian Cocker Spaniel Society for their kind invitation to judge the Special Awards classes at their 60th Anniversary Show on Sunday 21st September 2025. Not only was I spoilt with a truly fabulous entry, I was also welcomed warmly and fed handsomely. My thanks to each and every exhibitor for the opportunity to go over your dogs, for preparing them all so beautifully and for taking my decisions so graciously. Such a friendly atmosphere ringside and I thoroughly enjoyed my day and the Society’s hospitality. An appointment I shall remember fondly for so many reasons, so thank you.

1. Mrs AJ & Mr KR Collings’ AYLESMEAD BLUE ROSE AT COLMANDAKEV

I was very taken by this almost 12-month-old blue roan bitch who presented with a well-balanced overall outline. She has a lovely feminine head with the gentlest of expressions and super dark eye. Her skull was well-developed for her age with good chiselling. Her neck was moderate in length and proportionate to her size and set neatly into her shoulders. She has a strong compact body with a well-developed chest and good spring of rib. Her legs were straight and well-boned with a good bend of stifle and short hocks which allowed her to show good drive on the move with a typical bustling action and, of course, that ever-wagging lively tail which my notes record did not stop! She was very happy showing and displayed her merry nature in abundance.

2. Mrs S A Wright’s CHAZBAZ I HAVE A DREAM

This beautifully presented golden bitch of almost 10 months was set slightly higher on her legs than my class winner. She was nevertheless well-balanced and proportionate in overall outline. She has a slightly longer muzzle than 1 but was still balanced in face with a distinct stop midway between her nose and the back of her skull which was well-developed and showing clean chiselling. She has the softest of expressions but still with that bright and merry eye that is typical of this breed. She has a particularly strong front assembly with good length of neck set into fine sloping shoulders. She has a well-developed chest with deep brisket and well sprung ribs. She moved well with a lovely through action holding her top line well and driving her legs under her and looked good especially in profile movement. Again, a lovely waggy tail.

1. Mrs E & Mr M Gray’s PURDYSPRIDE RAVE ON JW

There was much to admire in this big class, but this 21-month-old blue roan boy caught my eye. He has a masculine but beautifully balanced well-worked head with a bright intelligent eye. He is sturdy and compact in construction with a super front assembly. His forechest was well-developed and I very much liked his neck into lie of shoulder and return of upper arm. He has a lovely spring of rib and was nicely coupled with good overall substance and balance to his body. He has super hindquarters with well-muscled legs and a correct bend of stifle into lovely tight feet and short hocks which he used to good effect on the move covering the ground well and displaying that characteristic merry action in full and with purpose. In super condition and a worthy class winner.

2. Dr R Kotanen’s YOKATAI QUEEN OF CHAOS JW

This sweet 2 year-old blue roan bitch was presented immaculately and in beautiful coat and condition. She has a super feminine nicely chiselled head with an alert but gentle dark eye. A slightly longer neck than my winner but flowing down well into her shoulders maintaining a good level top line. She has a lovely compact body with a well-developed chest and good spring of rib. I particularly liked her curvy rear end and her strong muscular hindquarters. She stood on good firm feet and moved out well with drive, particularly out and back, accompanied by a lovely lively tail action. It was lovely to see her win her postgraduate class in the main show and make the short-list for best in show.

1. Mrs S A Wright’s LA SCALES BERLIN WITH CHAZBAZ (IMP HUN)

This 4 ½ year-old solid black male stood out for me today in this large class. On the stack he had a beautiful well-balanced compact outline with plenty of substance throughout his body with a well-developed chest and deep brisket and good spring of rib. He had an unmistakeably masculine but cleanly-chiselled head and a good tight eye. Lovely ear set. He was presented in immaculate condition with a gleaming silky coat. He moved with real purpose and drive using his strong well-muscled hindquarters and held his top line well. His constantly wagging tail showed me that he was thoroughly enjoying himself and he took the class on showmanship.

2. Mrs D Yilmaz’s ANLASANA YEAVERING BELLE

I thought this 2-year-old blue roan bitch was simply lovely. She oozed femininity throughout and had the sweetest of heads with the most appealing of expressions; a real softness. She has a compact cobby body with a good depth of chest and a well-sprung rib. Slightly more angulated in the rear than the class winner but nevertheless stood on well-boned legs with lovely cat-like feet. She moved out well covering the ground effectively with typical merry action and holding her top line correctly. Presented beautifully with a glorious flat silky coat.

3. Mr A & Mrs C S Wildman’s WILANORAH PERFIK SCOUNDREL AT CHANMALO
