CHESTERFIELD CRITIQUE 3rd May 2025 Premier Open Show, Utilities and Groups
Thank you to the Officers and Committee for the invitation to judge some of the Utilities and the Utility Groups at your very well run show, and I must mention your fabulous hospitality and the cakes! It was a pleasure to spend the day with you all and the exhibitors who kindly brought their dogs under me. Thanks must also go the my very capable ring stewards, Rachel, Wendell and Cath, who kept the ring running smoothly all day.
JAPANESE SHIBA INU
P (4,2) 1ST Miss Bryans’ Marilouvale Crack the Code, just under 7 months, a red bitch with a lovely head and expression. She has small well set ears, dark eyes and good length of muzzle. In profile she presents a sturdy balanced outline, with a level topline and high placed tail. She has a developing front and rib, and tight feet. She was slightly nervous on the table, but soon settled and moved well. BP
2nd Miss Bryans’ Bambola La Leggenda Dei Samurai at Marilouvale, an 11 month old white bitch, another who presented a small sturdy balanced outline, with a straight front, good angulation and level topline with a moderate tuck up and high set tail. Similar headset, I just preferred the expression on 1st. She also moved well and with confidence.
J (2,0) 1st Miss Bryans’ Marilouvale Red Hot Pepper, a 9 month old black and tan dog with a good head set, he has a flat skull, well placed small ears and pleasing length of muzzle. He was in good coat and very alert. His thick neck flows into his shoulders, he has tight elbows and good angulation front and rear, and a thick curled tail. He moved well in all directions.
2nd Miss Bryans’ Marilouvale Blank Cheque, another 9 month old black and tan dog, he did not have quite the full coat or balanced outline of 1st, being slightly longer cast. His head and expression were delightful, with good length of muzzle and tight lips, small dark eyes and small triangular ears, inclining forward. He was very exuberant on the move.
PG (5,2) 1st Miss Bryans’ Marilouvale Ralph Lauren, a 17 month old red dog who stood out for size and balance. He has a broad flat skull, dark almond eyes, cheeks are well developed, and he has a pleasing length of muzzle with tight lips and good dentition. His elbows are close and his front is straight, with good depth of chest and spring of rib. He maintained his topline on the move when settled, demonstrating a light energetic gait. BOB
2nd Mrs Footitt’s Here’s Lily, a 19 month old red and white bitch with a pretty expression and friendly temperament. She has enough neck, well placed shoulders, neat cat like feet and a moderate tuck up. Her topline is level and her tail high set and curled. She was very attentive to her handler, and moved well
O (2,1) 1st Miss Bryans’ Marilouvale Eddie Murphy JW, a red male over 2 years old, he has a strong masculine headset with a good muzzle and well developed cheeks, well placed small ears and an alert expression. His outline is balanced and he has ample bone. His front is straight, his chest deep and his thick slightly arched neck flows into well placed shoulders. He maintained his topline and tailset but tended to pace today.
LHASA APSO
P (3,1) 1st Ms Hazelhurst’s Mytilene Magical Moments at Corroll, a 9 month old black bitch with a balanced outline, pleasing head proportions and an alert expression. She has a strong neck leading down into well laid back shoulders, developing chest and rib correct for her age, and a straight front with round cat like feet. Her topline is level and she maintained it on the move. She has a high set tail and moved freely round the ring. BP
2nd Dr Downes’ Alamiks No Strange Delight for Tsuki, a 10 month old gold dog and another with a pleasing head. He has a masculine expression, correct eye and nose placement and well set ears. His neck is strong and leads down to well placed shoulders, he has developing chest and rib and well feathered round feet. He has a level topline and high set well feathered tail, and he moved well. Overall, not as compact as 1st place.
J (2,1) 1st Ms Hazelhurst’s Orcavoe Romeo at Corroll, 13 months old dog with a wonderful golden coat. He was well presented and had a lovely balanced outline. His strong well arched neck was topped by a head of good proportions, with an alert assertive gaze in his dark eyes. His ears are well set and heavily feathered, and his muzzle is of good length. He has a level topline and strong loin, and good length of rib. His movement was smooth and he was well handled.
PG (2,0) 1st Dr Downes’ Montrabella Prince Von Tsuki, a 4 year old gold male with a pleasing outline, compact and sturdy, with everything in proportion. His strong arched neck leads into well placed shoulders, and his front is straight and heavily furnished. His ribs extend well back and his topline is level and maintained on the move. He has good angulation and round well feathered feet. He moved freely and was handled very well, BOB
2nd Mr Thornhill’s Swandown Snowstorm, a 21 month old gold and white dog, he has a long heavy topcoat and was well presented. He has a pleasing headset, with heavily feathered pendant ears, dark oval eyes and good length of muzzle. He was longer cast than 1st place, and dropped his tail on occasion today.
O (3,0) 1st Mr Connett & Mrs Clutterbuck’s Kutani Daredevil, a 5 year old cream dog, in excellent coat and very well presented. He has a masculine expression, a good length of muzzle and stop, with a straight foreface and well feathered ears. He has a sturdy balanced frame, level topline and strong loin, and he moved smoothly
2nd Mrs Musial’s Int/Pol Ch Naomi Dreamed a Dream, a 3 year old black bitch with a pretty feminine head, dark oval eyes and ears well set, good dentition and length of muzzle. Everything is in proportion on her small frame. Her tail is set high and well furnished, and she moved soundly round the ring.
BOSTON TERRIER
P (2,0) 1ST Mrs Monk & Jones’ Olearia Westfalen Real Deal, a 9 month old brindle and white bitch with a lovely shine to her well marked coat. She has a compact square outline, a feminine headset with dark round eyes, good width of jaw and depth of muzzle. Her front is straight, with tight pasterns. Developing chest and rib, a pleasing turn of stifle and a lovely level topline with a well set small tail. She moved well when settled, and was attentive to her handler. BP and UPG2
2nd Mrs Walker’s Bo Katan of Klan Krayze, a seal brindle and white bitch just 1 day shy of her first birthday. Maturing at a slower pace than 1st place, she also has a pretty feminine headset, lovely dark round eyes, good earset and short muzzle. Depth of chest and ribs still developing, she was a bit unsettled on the move.
J (1,0) 1st Mrs Monk & Jones’ Olearia Westfalen Real Gold, litter sister to 1st in puppy and many of the same attributes, although a tad longer in body, and a slightly shorter neck. She has a good front, tight pasterns and pleasing angulation front and rear. Unsettled on the move in the class and challenge.
PG (1,0) Ms Turner’s Geesecos Private Dancer, an 18 month old black and white dog with a strong masculine expression, he has a square head, flat on top and wrinkle free, good width of jaw and depth of muzzle. I would prefer a higher earset. He has ample bone and good angulation front and rear, and moved well.
O (3,1) 1st Miss Ward and Hale’s Frenbosen Let It Be, a 2 year old seal brindle and white dog, upstanding and balanced, he has a strong masculine head with good width of jaw and muzzle deep and well cushioned. He is flat and wrinkle free between correctly placed ears, and has an intelligent glint in his eye. His neck is of good length, neatly set into sloping shoulders, and his front is straight with tight pasterns and neat feet. He has good depth of chest and spring of rib, a level topline and tail set on low. He is well muscled and moved effortlessly in all directions, maintaining his topline. BOB and UG3
2nd Mrs Walker’s Ch Image Catcher of Ziost, an 8 year old lady with a touch of silver frosting on her pretty feminine head, she was a delight to go over. Her head is square and she has lovely width and depth to her muzzle, correct nose and eye placement, and she used her correctly placed ears at all times. She has a kind and knowledgeable expression and was clearly at one with her handler. She presents a compact square outline, straight front, tight pasterns and a level topline. She has good angulation and a pleasing turn of stifle, with hocks well let down. She moved effortlessly round the ring in all directions. I was also pleased to award her 2nd in AV Utility Veteran.
POODLE (MINIATURE)
P (2,1) 1ST Mrs Tofts’ Poornima Im On My Way, a 7 month old brown dog with a nicely balanced outline, good front and developing width of chest. He has a strong foreface, good length of muzzle and tight lips. His almond shaped eyes have a glint of naughtiness in them, and his leathers are long and wide. He has good length of neck and holds his head high at all times. His back is short and strong and his tail set high. He moved with drive and was handled well. BOB and BP, UPG4

2nd Miss Bird’s One Lucky Girl, a red bitch of 14 months, well presented in a profuse harsh coat. She has dark eyes and a kind expression, ears well set and of good length, pleasing length of muzzle and a defined chin. She is well ribbed and has a short strong back and well placed high set tail. Unfortunately today she found the grass very interesting and movement was hard to assess.
PG (1,1)
O (3,1) 1st Mr & Mrs Smith’s Dorian Gray’s Young Buck at Threearewild (imp Deu), a 2 ½ yr old silver dog, with an elegant headpiece, an alert expression and dark eyes with flat cheeks, good length of muzzle and correct bite. His ears are set low, and he has a strong neck leading down to well placed shoulders. His front is straight and he has good depth of chest and spring of rib. His thighs are muscular and hocks well let down. His tail dropped on the move, but his movement was sound.
2nd Mrs Talbot’s Hosha Skyz Da Limit at Ysabelkid, just shy of her 10th birthday, this lovely veteran has a profuse black coat and a pretty headset with dark almond eyes, well defined chin and flat cheek bones. She has a straight front, deep chest and well sprung ribs. A short back, high set tail and good turn of stifle finish the picture. She moved with ease round the ring.
TIBETAN SPANIEL
O (3,1) 1ST Miss Thompson’s Susu Prince Charming ShCEx, a 7 year old gold sable dog with a black mask, silky coat, nicely feathered on ears and tail, and with a full mane. He carried his head proudly at all times, with dark expressive eyes, good width and has depth to his muzzle, and ample cushioning. He has sufficient bone, small neat hare feet and a level back with a high set tail completing the picture. He moved very well with a quick free gait, I was pleased to award him BOB and later UG4 and 3rd in AV Utility Veteran.
2nd Mr & Mrs Collett’s Velrok Ringing Gold JW, another gold sable male, well presented with a lovely black mask and strong neck with a full mane. He has a balanced outline, short strong neck and a masculine headset, with an aloof expression. His eyes are dark and correctly placed, he has a blunt muzzle with ample cushioning, and well set ears with a slight lift. He was a pleasure to go over, I just preferred the movement of 1st place today.
AKITA
J (2,1) Miss Hutton & Mr Walker’s Whitewreath Trigger Finger, a 15 month old red and white bitch who has the most beautiful headset. Free from wrinkle, she has a broad strong muzzle, large black nose and tight lips, defined stop and small dark well set eyes, giving her a dignified expression. She is well off for bone, with a straight front, tight elbows and well developed forechest. Her neck is thick and well set into laid back shoulders. She has a level back and strong loin, well developed thighs and tight well knuckled feet. She moved well in all directions and was shown expertly by her young handler. BOB and UG1
A.V.N.S.C. UTILITY
P (3,0) 1ST Miss Parson’s Eliterosess Niffler at Bronkinla, Eurasier. An 11 month old red and black male with a harsh textured long coat covering his well-constructed frame. He has a pleasing headset, with dark oval well set eyes, triangular ears with rounded tips, good length of muzzle, strong broad jaw and correct bite. He is balanced in profile and has a straight front, deep chest to elbows, strong pasterns and moderate angulation front and rear. His high set tail falls over his strong level back, and he moved soundly round the ring, I was pleased to award him BP.
2nd Mrs Grimshaw’s Sharpuggles Suck On That, Shar Pei. A 7 month old red bitch, and another puppy with a nicely balanced outline. She has an appealing headset, with almond shaped eyes and frowning expression, well shaped muzzle, and small correctly placed ears. She is short coupled, and has a straight front with elbows held close, developing chest and rib, and strong hindquarters. She was unsettled on the move today.
J (3,1) 1st Ms Piket’s Dandy-Lion’s Sno’Bodys Business (Imp Swe), Poodle (Standard). A 14 month old brown dog who was well presented with a dense harsh coat. He has a masculine head with a naughty glint in his dark eyes, strong foreface, moderate stop and flat cheekbones. His ears are low set and hang close, and his neck is of good length. His body is in proportion, with a deep chest and ribs well sprung. He moved elegantly with proud carriage and was handled well. Best AVNSC
2nd Mr & Mrs Morris’ Witchgait Breaking Bad with Ashowai, Shar Pei. Just out of puppy, this red fawn is all male, with a square compact outline, harsh coat and pleasing headset. He had a lovely calm demeanour and was a pleasure to go over. He has a straight front, well knuckled feet, good depth of chest and a short strong back, with high set curled tail. He moved with long strides, and was well handled.
PG (4,3) 1st Miss Penkethman’s Viadua Virtue of Triton, Poodle (Standard). Coming up to 3 years old, this black male was well presented in continental trim with a harsh dense coat. He has a strong masculine headset with dark eyes, a strong foreface and well defined chin. His neck is well proportioned and he carries his head high. His front is straight, his thighs are well developed and he has a good turn of stifle. He moved soundly with drive.
O (5,2) 1st Mr & Mrs Guy’s Cirtaps Prinses Bynton Ida Rose MK (Imp Swe), Kooikerhondje. I was very surprised to be informed this lovely bitch is 11 years old, she gives nothing away at all. Her outline is balanced and she has a pretty, feminine expression. She is very alert with dark almond shaped eyes, well feathered ears of correct size and position, good length of muzzle and a strong jaw. Everything is in proportion and she is well muscled and firm. She moved with a flowing springy gait and plenty of drive, I was also pleased to award her 1st in Utility Veteran.
2nd Mr & Mrs Morris’ Ch Ashowai One Moment in Time, Shar Pei. A 6 year old bitch with a harsh red coat on her square compact frame. She has a well padded muzzle, dark eyes and a lovely frowning expression, well set ears of correct size and shape, and is clearly devoted to her handler, which is always lovely to see. Her front is straight and elbows are tucked in, with moderate angulation front and rear. She is short coupled with a high tailset, and she had free balanced movement.
AV UTILITY VETERAN (9,2) a lovely class of veterans, it was a pleasure to go over them all.

4th Miss Stacey’s Ch Lefenix in the Style Lilembe, Schnauzer. A 7 year old bitch with a pepper & salt harsh coat, well groomed and presented. She has a pleasing headset with a keen expression, plenty of brow, moustache and beard furnishings, a strong muzzle and tight lips. She has a straight front, good shoulder and elbow placement, and ample bone. Her profile is balanced, and she moved soundly.
UTILITY GROUP
1ST Akita, Miss Hutton & Mr Walker’s Whitewreath Trigger Finger, see Akita, 1st Junior
2nd Bulldog, Messrs Avison & Ainsworth’s Boltonbully Captain Morgan, a two year old red and white male, he has a compact powerful frame, with plenty of substance. His broad square skull is clean and free from any excess, with dark eyes, well places ears and a powerful jaw, giving him an alert determined expression. His forelegs are strong and set well apart, he has well rounded ribs, a deep chest and short strong back with a gentle rise over the loin, finishing with a low set tail. He moved soundly with the distinct bulldog roll, and was very well handled.

UTILITY PUPPY GROUP
1ST Shih Tzu, Miss Howard’s Tameron Mr Penhaligon’s. 2 days short of his 1st birthday, this gold and white male was a pleasure to go over. His head is broad and round, with large dark expressive eyes, long leathers, excellent pigment and with a good beard on his square short muzzle. He carried his head proudly, and has ample bone on his sturdy balanced frame. He has a level back and his heavily plumed tail is set high and carried over his back. He moved with smooth flowing arrogance, showing full pad and was expertly handled. I was delighted to hear he went BPIS later in the day.

3rd French Bulldog, Miss Wood’s Zimblistic Spooky Charm Delightbull. A 9 month old brindle pied dog, with a sturdy compact outline. He has a strong masculine head, with good width of muzzle, excellent dark pigment on nose and lips, dark round eyes, and bat ears of medium size. He has ample bone and developing chest and spring of rib. His strong back has a gentle rise over the loin, and he moved well in all directions.
