Breed: Breeds and Stakes

South of England Gundog Club 30 March 2025

My thanks to the Club for the invitation to judge at this well-run show. My stewards were excellent and efficient through the day. Many thanks to those who entered under me, you gave me some split hair decisions!

English Setters

Special Yearling (6)

1 Whittingtons’ Culverwell Magic Touch

18th month old Orange Dog. Presented in good condition with enough coat for his age. Scored on his outline and lovely masculine head with correct stop and kind expression. Good in shoulder with correct angles front and rear. Rounded in bone with neat feet. Moved well. RBOB

2 Beasley’s Latjeata Cup of Kindness

One of 3 litter siblings in this class who all were even in type and presentation. This was a 7 month orange bitch who gave her handler some challenges. But she showed enough for me to see her lovely angles, balance and movement in the end. BPIB

3 Beasley’s Latjeata Jack’s the Lad

Post Grad (1)

1 Wynne-Evans’s Droveborough Blue Pearl

Although she stood alone this elegant dark blue roan 18 month old bitch presented a lovely balanced outline. Loved her head and expression. Good in bone with tight feet with good angulation and correct topline. Moved very well with drive.

Open (3)

1 Williams’ Richecca Midwinter

Appealing 4 year old dog. Well presented in good coat and condition. Good in bone with tight feet. Lovely balanced outline with correct angles throughout. I loved his masculine head with good stop and gentle eye. Deep in chest with nice spring of rib. Moved very well with good tail carriage. Happy to give him BOB.

2 Beasley’s Wansleydale Amaretto at Latjeata

My notes say pretty tri-colour 8 year old bitch defying her age. Very feminine with a correct outline. Well presented with many of the winner’s attributes. Moved well and was just beaten on the day.

3 Whittingtons’ Juledeane Line of Duty (AI)

Gordon Setters

Puppy (2)

1 Bryant’s Laurelhach Lotus with Muckypups

Bold 9 month old bitch who for her age showed very well for her handler. Good in bone with neat feet. Deep chested with correct angulation front and rear. Loved her feminine head with intelligent but gentle expression. Was very nice and settled on the move. BPIB

2 Clark’s DJ Bee Black Ivy (Imp Pol)

Pretty headed 8 month old bitch who was finer throughout than the winner. Good in angles, bone and overall outline. Would just prefer deeper chest and slightly tighter at elbow. This may improve as she matures.

Special Yearling (2)

1 Tye’s Roydack Black Knight at Tymora RBOB

Heavier type with adequate coat. Nicely balanced masculine head. Good bone and tight feet. Correct in topline and tailset. Moved well with lovely tail carriage. In the challenge just lacked in overall balance RBOB.

2 Horler, Horler, Sandiford and Sandiford’s Hernwood Bleu Spirit to Rackens

A finer type than the winner but balanced in outline with deep chest and correct angles. Was nice on the move but had his tail up today which detracted from the overall picture.

Post Grad (4,3)

1 Sandiford’s Hernwood Rocket Man JW

Took my eye when he came in the ring and didn’t disappoint on examination. Presented in excellent condition. Lovely masculine head with correct dark eye and ear placement. Clean in neck. Well proportioned throughout. Deep in chest with ribs well back. Good flat bone and neat feet. Moved with drive. Very pleased to award BOB

Limit (1 w/d due to floor)

Open (2,2)

AV Junior Stakes (21, 8)

1 Cook’s Brunwickes Style Sapphire

Well balanced Golden Retriever bitch. My notes say very smart and good all round. Nice mover correct in angles. Good in front. Correct in head with gentle expression.

2 Fisher & Derrett’s Appassionata Belisario (Imp USA)

Nearly 12 months this Bracco Italiano dog has a lovely shape overall with correct head planes and soft expression. Hopefully he will not get much taller and will develop throughout with age. Moved well.

3 Hunt’s Wakaduze Dotame (NSDTR B Mar 24)

AV Post Grad Stakes (33, 15)

1 Sainsbury’s Wooliebourne Nick of Time among Elskerwood

Pretty headed Clumber Spaniel bitch. Well angulated front and rear. Good deep chest with well sprung ribs. Moved very well.

2 Wilson’s Hameldowntor Pedro Ximenez

4 year old Flatcoat Retriever Dog. Masculine head with good bone and neat feet and correct angulation. Adequate in coat and moved well.

3 Corcoran & Jone’s Oakmarsh Kingsley Adsila (Chesapeake B Jul 23)

AV Crufts Qualified (20,10)

1 Wilson’s Hameldowntor Pedro Ximenez

2nd in Post Graduate Stakes (see above)

2 Bowen-Brooks’ Enshilling Blowin Smoke

8 year old classic headed black and white Pointer dog. Clean in outline with nothing exaggerated. Good in bone with neat feet. Lovely on the move.

3 Williams & Toublic’s Cobhay Fancy Phlox (ESS B Nov 18)
