Bloodhound Club

Judges’ Critiques The Bloodhound Club Open Show 02.11.25.

Judge Mr R.J.Gunn.

My thanks to the officers and committee for their invitation to judge at their club show and for all their hospitality on the day plus to all the exhibitors for allowing me the privilege of going over their hounds. The breed is one that I thoroughly enjoy judging for each hound has its own character and they are such gentle, affectionate hounds. Although there were only a few hounds present the overall quality of those present was excellent, all being presented in superb muscle and I’m sure each one was capable of going out on a day’s hunting. The weather too was good enough to judge outside and apart from one small slip the day went well with everyone clapping for the winners and showing great sportsmanship.

1st Prior Houndseeker Falcon (AI).

Impressive hound who stands well over the ground. Handsome head with a balanced skull to muzzle proportions with dark, medium sized eyes, giving a noble expression and long, low set ears. Good front with his shoulders correctly placed, ample bone to his legs and strong pasterns. His body is well let down with his ribs well sprung and he has a strong back. To his rear he has strong, muscular thighs and strong, well knuckled feet. On the move he covered the ground with ease.

1st Westron Farlap Kaleb.

Handsome dog well balanced in his outline of impressive proportions. Masculine head of typical proportions, appearing flattened at sides and of near equal width throughout. Noble expression from his correctly set dark eyes and his ears falling in graceful folds. He carried his head well on his long neck which leads down to his muscular shoulders with his elbows well set in and ample bone to his front. Well let down in his chest giving a deep keel, well sprung ribs and a strong, muscular loin. His rear complimented his front perfectly, with muscular thighs and strong hocks. His movement was typical of the breed being elastic and free. Reserve best dog.

Another noble hound, full of quality and well balanced throughout his outline, giving the impression of a hound that could easily do a day’s hunting. Correct in his head proportions with good eyes and ears. Muscular front with shoulders sloping, straight legs with round bone and strong, well knuckled feet. Deep in his body with his ribs well sprung and his back strong. His rear has strong, muscular thighs and he carried his tail up like a scimitar. He moved well around the ring.

An impressive hound who stands over a lot of ground. Masculine in his head of correct proportions and in profile his upper outline is nearly in the same plane as his foreface. Medium sized eyes correctly set giving a noble expression and long, low set ears that have a graceful fold to them. Strong front assembly with good muscle, straight, well-boned forelegs and tight well knuckled feet. Ample depth to his front forming a keel and with his ribs well sprung leading to his strong muscular loin. Muscular, well developed thighs to his rear with strong, well let down hocks. On the move he had a free and elastic action around the ring and was true coming and going. Best dog and reserve best of breed.

Loved this beautiful bitch who for me was a true representation of breed type and I could see her coping with a day’s hunt easily . Her head was in proportion to her body, appearing flattened at the sides and in profile her skull is nearly in the same plane as her foreface. Beautiful expression from her medium sized, well placed eyes and her low set ears of correct length just falling in graceful folds. Straight, well boned forelegs with her shoulders muscular and sloping. Well let down in her chest with her ribs well sprung and her back strong. Muscular rear with her hocks well let down and her feet are well knuckled up. On the move she carried her tail up like a scimitar and she covered the ground with a free and elastic gait. I loved this eight year old girl who stood over plenty of ground and for me was presented in the best overall condition on the day. Typical in her head which is in proportion to her size with excellent head planes and beautiful expression from her eyes. Well boned, straight forelegs with strong pasterns, muscular sloping shoulders and her chest well let down. She has a strong, deep loin and her rear has muscular thighs with her hocks well let down.
