Chippenham & District Canine Society

Chippenham and District Canine Society. 6th April 2025 I would like to begin by extending my sincere thanks to everyone involved in organising such a well-run and enjoyable show. Particular appreciation goes to my two fabulous stewards, Richie Cairns and Sian Bredif, whose efficiency and professionalism kept the ring running smoothly throughout the day — everything went like clockwork. It was an absolute pleasure to judge the Utility group at this show. The quality presented was truly outstanding and, without doubt, the strongest group I have had the privilege of judging in all my years . Inevitably, this meant that some very worthy dogs had to go without a placing — a reflection not of their shortcomings, but of the exceptionally high standard across the board. I do, however, feel it is important to address a matter of etiquette. Exhibitors are reminded that it is neither appropriate nor professional to critique other dogs or handlers, whether the judge is in the ring or on a break. Additionally, referencing your dog’s previous wins while it’s being assessed is not helpful. Judges can only go by what they see on the day. Lastly, I was disappointed to hear that, shortly after the show, some individuals were reportedly telling others they had been assured of a group win under me. Let me be absolutely clear: I do not make decisions until I have assessed every dog in contention. I pride myself on judging without political influence, but it’s unfortunate that such behaviour continues to undermine the integrity of our sport. This kind of presumption only contributes to the growing concerns facing the future of dog showing Poodle (toy) Puppy (2,0) 1st - MILLS, MISS S A - MAGNUSPAWS SHIMMER N'SHINE AT OSHALEES. Good depth of muzzle with well defined lips. Lovely oval shaped eyes and of good colour set well in head. Ears are set well and of good size and are close to face. Long arched neck leading into shoulders that are well laid back with a good return of upper arm and elbows tight to a deep chest. Straight front limbs which is good for bone and correct shape finished with well arched feet. Lovely topline with slight arch over loin finished with a good tail set and of good length. Rear is well muscled and rounded with a good turn of stifle and strong hocks. I have judged this girl before and it was in a much smaller ring, but today with a fabulous young handler she was able to really showcase her movement with a super drive in rear and reach in front showing that she would be able to follow any carriage. 2nd - SAUNDERS, MISS C - HAFWENNA HOUSE OF STARK AT GIFFWINNOAH. A black spotted male Dalmatian who was a little unsure of himself. Pleasing head profile with good width of skull. Lovely muzzle to skull proportions. Ears are set on high and leathers are of good length carried well close to face. Eyes are of good oval shape but just shows white of eye which spoils the expression. Long arched neck leading into well laid shoulders. Good for bone throughout. Feet are well arched. Great depth of chest which allows plenty of heart and lung room. Muscular loin which has slightly arch. Tail set ok but can carry it a little high on the move. Well rounded croup with muscular thighs and well let down hocks. Moved out ok. Veteran 1st - GUY, MR A & MRS K - CIRTAPS PRINSES BYNTON IDA ROSE MK (IMP SWE) B 2nd - TIMMS, MISS O - EASTONITE MOANA JW OSW AWS. Incredibly unfortunate to meet 1 today who was on top form all day. That said there is so much to appreciate in this bitch. Ultra feminine headpiece. Good width to skull. Dome to forehead with being almost flat between high set good size ears. Round eyes placed well in head. Muzzle of good length with enough cushioning. Good width to underjaw. Neck is of good length and arched well leading into a super shoulder placement. Front assembly is strong with straight parallel limbs finished with compact feet. Super depth to chest with good spring of ribs. Lovely topline with slight rise over muscular loin leading to a low set tail. Rear is well muscled with enough angulation and well let down hocks. On the move it was true coming and going. Champion 1st - BEVIS, MRS P J - CH SKYVANNA EMPTY DREAMS OF STARLANCE ShCEx. What a worthy champion this dog is. On initial inspection you can see the quality oozing. Once you get your hands on everything flows from the tip of his nose to the end of his tail. I wrote in my book, “what a fabulous headpiece” he has everything where it needs to be. It’s masculine without being coarse. Lovely oval expressive eyes. Good length to muzzle with a good width to underjaw. Correct bow to front with good layback to shoulder. Longer than high with a super topline with good length of loin finished with a high set tail. Rear is angulated well with super muscle tone. If a dog is built right it’ll move right and he most certainly can move. He has super drive in rear and reach in front whilst maintaining topline and covering the ground well. 2nd - RICE, MRS J - CH RICOX SOMEBODY TO LOVE JW ShCM ShCEx VW B Junior Handling 6-11 years I want to commend all these young handler who will all have a bright future. When I do JHA and AH qualifiers I always make them a little more challenging to ensure that the cream of the crop are qualifying. Please do not feel disheartened by your placings, take the advice I gave you all and apply it to your next competition. Because you are all empathetic and polite and have a natural way of handling and that is the start to being a good handler. There are great resources for points of the dog which I would recommend brushing up on as these points will always be asked. And always remember to thank your judge once you are finished. I asked all age groups to do a reverse triangle and up and down. On the up and down I moved from where I started which is a challenge for all exhibits to check where the judge is and forces a change of hand. I also asked if everyone had a poo bag. 1st Kaycee-Mae Turton - kaycee handled her dog in a calm manner which is always important especially if your dog is being a little testing. The triangle was completed the wrong way. So just remember to listen to all instructions before you start off. That said the pattern that was completed had correct straight line with sharp corners. Shadowing was great and always had the dog between handler and judge. Handling on the table was good with correct way of showing the bite. Pace for the dog was great at all times. 2nd Luke Saunders - a pleasant young man who was dressed super smart. Completed pattern work very well with clean straight lines. Always remember to keep the dog between the judge and yourself as that is the golden rule of handling. Had a poo bag. Table work was good with showing the bite. Pace was good throughout. 12-16 years 1st - Isabella Carter - pattern work was great with good shaping and clean lines. Always watched where I was. Pace was correct for the size of dog. Brush up on your points of the dog and you’ll keep getting better. 2nd - Lisa-Rose Saunders - this young handler was an absolute delight to have in the ring. Having fun is what it is all about and us as judges should be nurturing these younger age brackets. Lisa-Rose had a great pace for her dog and was always encouraging her dog. I explained the pattern to Lisa-Rose to ensure that she felt encouraged with what was being asked and not to be felt overwhelmed. Keep up the great work as you are doing a fabulous job. Adult Handling 17-39 years I have competed against both of these fabulous handlers and what an honour it was to judge them and see how good they are from a judging prospective. I pushed these 2 handlers and I was struggling to split the placing until the last go round where 1st had a cleaner change of hand 1st - Phoebe Toublic - handling a springer spaniel that was being incredibly difficult. Phoebe kept calm and was correcting her dog with gentle persuasions and encouraging her dog to do what was asked. Pattern work was faultless, points of the dog was all correct. Attitude to handling class was the way it should be with great manners. A credit to you and would trust with any dog of mine. 2nd - Alysha Branchflower. Another handler I have admired whilst being in the ring with. Handling a beauceron. A lot of dog to handle but Alysha makes it look effortless. Shadowing is faultless, pattern work is crisp and clean with the pace correct for the dog at all times. Points of the dog was all correct and the only thing that cost the place was the final go round where the change of hand wasn’t as clean as 1. 40 years and over I have had the pleasure of judging most of this age group before and every time they give me a headache of splitting them into their placings as they’re all so good. First 3 all have swapped places under me before. 1st - Anita Skinner - what a fabulous handler and one I would quite happily allow handle my dogs if ever needed as I feel they would be in great hands. Shadowing was on point every single time, Anita was aware of where I was at all times which meant there was clean changes of hands. Pattern work was great as was the table work. Had a poo bag. Super super job! 2nd - Marie England - another handler that had a great rapport with her dog and knew the correct pace she needed. Handles with ease. Pattern work was excellent. There was just one occasion where there was a change of hand that wasn’t as clean as the others. But great job overall. Judge Richard Forsythe (RICHPIN)
