Breed: Neapolitan Mastiff

Judge: Penny Roberts, Archaeus

It was so good to be invited to judge the breed at this important sub-group show. On paper the entry was very good, however, on the day there were a number of absentees. The first three classes were litter siblings of 15 months, and it was interesting to see them at this point in their development.

Puppy (1,1)

Junior (2,1)

1. Makaevo Gratiana. 15mo bitch developing nicely. Pretty, feminine head, good wide nostrils and clean skin. Good length of body and correct front and rear angulation. Movement was a little erratic, but she is still to come into herself, and she was sound. Hope to see her in her maturity.

Post Graduate Dog (3,2)

1. Makaevo Georgio. 15mo male. At the teenage stage he has still to broaden and drop into himself, and looks ‘leggy’ for the moment. Strong head, would like a slightly tighter eye rim, but no sign of irritation. This boy is strongly built and has good bone and feet. I liked his angulation and his strong rear. On the move he was a little erratic.

Post Graduate Bitch (2,1)

1. Makaevo Generosa. 15mo female. Feminine head, with good ear set. Would like less haw, but eyes were clean. Needs to broaden all through, but that should come. Tail carried a little high, which detracted from overall outline. On the move she was very sound, moving out well.

Open Dog (1,1)

1. Wroxwood Omar’s Kumala. Lovely blue bitch, showing maturity and so well made. Very typey. Super head and expression and sufficient wrinkle, clean eyes, well placed ears . Well balanced muzzle to skull and good breadth. Her frame was broad and well-muscled, with excellent front and depth of chest. Good overall proportions with lovely firm topline and correct tail set. Dense coat which shone. Strong bone and good feet. Moved out soundly with the required freedom and driving from rear. BOB.

2. Elena (imp Esp). Mature bitch of lovely type. Another blue, of darker hue with dense coat in great condition. Feminine head, a little light, but with good earset, clear eyes, sufficient wrinkling. Lovely bone and feet. Very sound and free on move. RBOB.
