Thank you to the very hospitable and well organised committee for the invitation to judge my first best in show. A superb entry across all the classes awaited me. Thank you for your entry and thank you for your sportsmanship with my placings.

AV Gundog Veteran (11,5a)

1st Harker’s Sh Ch Hernwood Achilles at Ettrick (Gordon Setter). 8 year male and superb in profile. Very masculine throughout. He has a very clean head shape with correct dentition. Lovely muzzle, nice flews, correct stop. His eyes were dark and set correctly to enhance his expression. The skull has that required slight roundness with ears set well and of sufficient length. Superb length of neck into well placed shoulders. His front is super with good depth of chest and plenty of rib room. Lovely length of body, strong loins. Tail set well and carried correctly on the move. The hind angles are correct which are well muscled and showed true drive on the move. The coat is of correct texture and showing good markings of lovely colour.

2nd Challis’ Highforce Future Legend for Vizslanya JW SHCEx VW (Hungarian Vizsla). 8 year dog showing balance and a very masculine look. I like his strong skull, correct eye of correct shape. Good muzzle, correct dentition. Ears set well. Enough length of neck into well developed front. Good depth of chest, good for rib, nicely coupled into a muscular rear with good angulation. The coat colour was correct and in good condition. Tail set well, a good mover showing drive.

AV Hound Veteran (12,5a)

1st Scarlett’s Michelroy Pizzazz (Beagle). 7 year female and just superb. Very eye catching and upon hands on she got better. Balanced throughout, well constructed and compact, Her head is stunning, she has a lovely muzzle, correct stop and ears are set well, with correct shape dark eye. Good on front, well placed shoulders, nice feet, correct topline, good depth of chest and nice length to loin. Rear assembly was super, good stifle and hocks good. Tail set well and carried correctly when moving. Coat in good condition. Moved out well with typical good drive which earned her BVIS.

2nd Lewis’ Ch Olphae Charman** (Otterhound). 7 year male showing a very masculine profile. With an excellent shape to skull. Good muzzle, correct bite, clean stop. Ears set well. Well developed front, good feet. Lovely lay of shoulder, good depth of chest. Lovely length of back, Nicely coupled, tail set well. Well muscled at the rear. In amazing coat of good texture. Excelled on the move showing true drive.

AV Pastoral Veteran (10,3a)

1st Patterson’s Corimist over the Rainbow at Eltimaris (Bearded Collie). 7 year old female and showing a very typical outline. A nice honest, workmanlike lady. Good in skull, showing correct dimensions. Good bite, muzzle is correct with a good stop. Lovely shape to eye. Ears are set well. Good neck and well placed shoulders. She has a clean front, good depth of chest and lovely topline. Good length of body with a lovely strong loin. Rear angles are good and tail is set well. Coat in lovely condition. When moving was very typical, showing a really good stride.

2nd Rudd’s Infindigo Lintu Henkka (Finnish Lapphund). 8 year male and a favourite of mine. Good to see him enjoying veteran life. He has a lovely profile and super temperament. A lovely shape to head. Nice dark eyes of correct shape. Correct dentition, Correct set ears of good shape and carried well. Lovely front to him, good for bone, good feet. Well placed shoulders, correct depth to chest and well sprung ribs. Nicely coupled, Good rear angulation, really well muscled, good turn of stifle, well let down hocks. Tail set well and carried well on the move. In lovely coat which is in excellent condition. On the move he was free, effortless and really striding out.

AV Terrier Veteran (4,1a)

1st Mitchell’s Chedanstaff Devil Star ShCEx (Stafford). 7 year male showing good ring presence. A well balanced boy showing a very good masculine outline with no exaggerations. Good head dimensions with a lovely shape to muzzle and correct dentition. Lovely shape to eye, Another with well set ears of correct shape. Nice length to his muscled neck. Correct shoulders, nice front, well developed chest, Correct rib set, nice length to loin, nicely coupled, good topline, tail set well. Coat in good condition. Moved out with reach and drive.

2nd Harris’ Jobanker Virtuous Veronica (Bedlington Terrier). 8 year female and very pretty indeed. Very typy in profile showing a good feminine outline. Nice strong head, good muzzle, clean bite, correct eye shape, ears set well and of correct shape. Nice neck length into a nice, neat front, good solid bone, nice feet. Shoulders well placed, good deep chest, good elbows, correct topline, rear is of correct angles and muscled well. Coat presented in good condition. Moved well, absolutely effortless and striding out well.

AV Toy Veteran (9,3a)

1st Scott’s Mopseycoton Minti Minki (Coton De Tulear). 7 year male. Superb temperament. Of excellent type. Lovely head shape, good muzzle, correct bite, a gentle stop, correct eye, good length to neck. Correct front, well placed shoulders, good depth of chest, lovely correct topline, nice length of body. Rear angles are good, tail set well. Moved out well showing correct stride. Coat is in impeccable condition and presented well. A nice dog.

2nd Faithfull’s Ch Hamlock The Conspirator at Jonevelyn ShCM (Affenpinscher). 10 year female and just stunning for breed type. She has a lovely profile, well balanced, has a typical expression, lovely shape to skull, good blunt muzzle, lovely shape and dark eyes. Ears set well and of good length. Has a nice neck length into a super lay of shoulder. Correct front, really nice free. Lovely depth of chest and good rib, into a nice loin. Good rear angulation, topline is correct and tail set well and carried correctly on the move. Coat is of good condition showing super texture and condition throughout. Moved out well showing correct movement.

AV Utility Veteran (4,2a)

1st Finch & Bonner’s Sophtspot Hocus Pocus at Dalticino (Dalmatian). 9 year black female and so correct. Absolutely stunning in profile. A good shaped head, good strong bite. Nice shape to eyes, ears well set and used well. Good strong neck, very well constructed, good lay of shoulder. Strong bone, super chest, well ribbed and beautiful topline. Tail set well and carried correctly. On the move, uses those well muscled legs to really drive around the ring. In good coat and condition. Overall a very good bitch. RBVIS.

2nd Meakin’s Layoli Firecracker at Miksang (Tibetan Terrier). 8 year male and very typical for the breed. In profile a good masculine dog. Lovely shape to head and lovely expression. Lovely shape to his dark eyes and correct bite. Nice neck and chest, well boned and good construction front and rear. Good rib, nicely coupled, lovely angles at the rear. Tail set well. Coat in really good condition and presented well. On the move, nice, light, effortless and indeed looked like he could go all day.

Av Working Veteran (4)

1st Warren’s Angel’s Phoenix Dylan Dog of Copperfield (Bullmastiff). 7 year red male and just superb in profile. No doubting this lad is all male with no exaggerations. Well presented. Good Solid construction, well-shaped head, Good dark eyes, black muzzle, correct bite, nice shape to ears and set well. Well placed shoulders, lovely depth of chest good topline. Strong loin, Well muscled rear. On the move, striding out well and excellent to watch in profile. A good quality dog throughout.

2nd Pearn’s Bonmac Jackanory JW (Boxer). 7 year dark brindle female. Impressive in profile. She is showing typical balance. Good head shape, correct bite, good muzzle, well defined stop. Lovely shape and colour to eyes. Ears set and used well. Nice neck, good front, strong bone. Well placed shoulders, Straight front, neat feet, correct topline. Good strong loin. Tail set well and carried correctly. Good angles at the rear with good muscle. Good mover, lovely expression and in overall very good condition.

Special Yearling (3,1a)

1st Carter’s Matley’s Dreamchaser Final Fling with Karmeliann (Imp Can) 17 month female with great lines. Very balanced in profile. She has a very typical skull which I liked. Correct muzzle to skull ratio, clean bite, correct stop. Has correct eye shape and colour. Her skull is broad but within feminine shape. Correct length of neck, well placed shoulders, good deep chest, correct front and nice feet. Has a lovely length of body, good rib set, nice strong loin. Correct tail set. Well muscled rear end. Nice stifle, hocks let down. In good coat presented well. Moved around the ring well. RBOB.

2nd Christopherson’s Beardora Roly Poly. 14 month male and maturing well. A little bit more training to finish the picture as difficult to assess movement today. Good for type with an excellent shape to head. Up to size. Correct shape to head with well set ears of correct shape. Good neck, nice lay of shoulders. Good for body with nice rib set and good loin. Correct angles at the rear and moved out well when settled. Coat coming along nicely.

1 and 2 litter siblings with the winner of pastoral veteran class as their dam. Lovely family affair.

1st Webb’s Eltmaris Hip Hip Hooray. 3 year male of good substance and excellent maturity. Carries a lovely well balanced profile. His head is superb with good dentition, correct muzzle, lovely stop, eyes were of good shape and colour. Skull is broad with ears set well. Very sound throughout. Correct length of neck into a strong front. Well off for bone, correct feet, Deep chested, good for rib, good lay of shoulder. Nice topline, Well constructed rear end, correct angles, a nice turn of stifle, well let down hocks. Tail set well and carried correctly. Coat presented well and correct texture. It was his movement that won him the class, really reaching out and full of drive from the rear making it look effortless. BOB

2nd Patterson’s Eltmaris Platinum Pudding JW. Litter sister and carrying similar attributes. Balanced throughout, Well constructed, Head shape good, ears set well, another with correct shape dark eye. Good on front, well placed shoulders, nice feet, correct topline, good chest and nice length to loin. Rear assembly was nice, good stifle and hocks good. Tail set well. Moved out with good drive. I preferred the smoother movement of 1 which is what split these two in this class.

1st Dandridge’s Beaukitas Hyde Park. 3 year black and tan female showing well. Has a lovely outline with balance. The head is very typical with lovely bite, Good muzzle, correct stop into a lovely shape skull. The ears are set well and used well to perfect the expression. Well for front, good bone and nice deep chest, good spring of rib, correct feet, well coupled, good rear assembly, suitably muscled, tail set well and carried correctly. Coat of good texture. Moved out well showing correct drive.

1st Harrell & Branchflower’s Titan Des Ramparts Castel’s with Beaukita (IMP Fra). 3 year black and tan male. One I have judged before and rate him quite high. He is one of very few that is so close to the breed standard in my opinion that he would be ideal to be used for aspiring judges. Everything is there with no exaggerations. Nice, strong, powerful looking, alert and full of wonderful temperament. Masculine in body, good head dimensions, clean bite, lovely muzzle, correct dark eyes and correct stop. His ears are set well and used correctly to advantage. strong neck, straight front, good feet and good depth of chest. Well laid shoulders. Topline held well on the move, a good strong mover, good tail set and moved out well. Just a good, solid, honest dog. BOB

2nd White’s Overhills The Midas Touch for Beauceanto. 10 year old black and tan male. Another male showing well. Good profile. A beautiful shape to head and Lovely length of muzzle, Good bite, correct stop, good shape to skull, Lovely dark eyes of correct shape. Well set ears carried well. Good neck, correct in front, nice lay of shoulders, good depth of chest , with plenty of lung room. Good length of body, nice topline, good in loin. Correct rear assembly. Coat of good quality. When moving showed very typical stride. RBOB.

1st Henwood’s Kanamaren Don’t Give Up. Just coming up to 15 months, this b/w male is maturing well. Lovely profile, with excellent shape to skull. Good muzzle, correct bite, clean stop. Ears set well. Well developed front, good feet. Lovely lay of shoulder, good depth of chest. Lovely length of back, Nicely coupled, tail set well. Well muscled at the rear. In amazing coat of good texture. Excelled on the move showing true drive.

2nd Austin & Zolakova’s Hysteps That’ll Do. 15 month female showing an excellent shape. Lovely profile. Good shape head, good bite, lovely muzzle, correct stop. Lovely dark eyes and well set ears. Good length to neck, well placed shoulders, lovely front. Nice depth of chest, nice topline and well angled rear. Tail set well. Not in the best of coat but what was there was quality. Her movement is definitely a strength. Covering the ground well and really driving out from the rear.

1st Austin & Zolakova’s Sh Ch/ NLD Ch Hysteps My Irish Colleen JW. Oh I really like this 3 year b/w female. I gave this lady a puppy group a couple of years ago and remarked that I would like to see her when matured and here she is. She is right up my street for type with a classic outline and typical head. Lovely muzzle, correct stop and good dark eyes. Her ears are set well and used to really enhance that typy expression. Her neck is good, correct front, lovely depth of chest and correct feet. Lovely length of body, well coupled, hind angles are correct with correct stifle and well let down hocks. Tail set well. Coat in stunning condition. On the move she is stunning, I actually said “oh yes” in my head. Her head down and really covering the ground with minimal effort. BOB G1 and RBIS.

2nd Taylor’s Darian End Game. 5 year B/w male and much to like. He is masculine throughout with a very strong skull shape. His muzzle to skull ratios are correct. Good bite, correct stop. Super dark eyes of correct shape. Clean skull and ears are set well. Good neck, well placed shoulders. Super front, correct feet. Lovely depth of chest, length of body is good. Strong loin, nice rear angles which are well muscled. Good turn of stifle and hocks are let down. Coat is in lovely condition. His movement is good clearing the ground well. Has a tendency to fly his tail at times but in comparison to his many virtues it is not very significant. RBOB.

1st Rossiter’s Cocaro The Highlander JW. 19 month sable male and very nice in shape. A well balanced boy showing a very good masculine outline. Good head shape with a lovely shape to muzzle and correct dentition. Lovely shape to eye, With well set ears of correct shape. Nice length to neck. Well placed shoulders, correct front, well developed chest, good feet, Correct rib set, nice length to loin, good topline, tail set well. Coat in excellent condition with a nice texture to it. Showing very typical movement. BOB

2nd Rennison’s Karamel Kiss Ze Shetlandu by Zaniah (imp Cze). 14 month female another presenting a lovely profile. Good for breed type, lovely feminine profile. Nice shape to head, good muzzle and nice dentition. Correct shape eye, Lovely neck. Good chest, lovely front, good bone, correct angulations, good topline and nice length of back. Good strong loin. tail set well. Moved out well showing a typical stride. In good coat, another one well presented.

Post graduate (2,1a)

1st Mettan-ure’s Savendie Meleys. This 14 month Tri female is maturing nicely. Good shape to head, lovely eye set and colour, ears set well and of correct shape. Nice enough in neck, good front, shoulders placed well. Has a good topline and lovely length of body. Well angled at the back and tail set well. Lacking in coat today but what was there was in good condition. Moved out well showing confidence and good attitude.

1st Allen’s Sanbrakel Sunshine Breeze. 3 year sable female. Showing well. Presented beautifully. She shows a lovely balanced profile. A lovely shape to head, correct bite, good muzzle, correct stop, eyes of correct shape and colour and ears set well. Well placed shoulders, nice feet, good body, nice spring of rib, well coupled and good for length in body, Correct rear angles, tail set well. Coat in lovely condition. Nice mover showing good stride.RBOB

2nd McShane’s Blenmerrow Ring of Roses. 5 year sable female. She has a good shape in profile, showing balance. Her head is very good, with nice shape muzzle and good bite, correct shape skull. Lovely shape eyes and ears are well set and used well. Good neck and nice front. Good bone and good feet. A lovely depth of chest and good spring of rib. Nicely coupled, rear assembly developing well. Correct set to tail. Moved out well. In good coat.

AVNSC Pastoral. I enjoyed judging this very much. Lots of different breeds full of depth and type. I don’t want to be a cliché judge but if I had more firsts to hand out, I would have.

Special Yearling (9,1a)

1st King & Jennings Original Beauty Lady Orleansnow (IMP CZE) (Samoyed). This quality female celebrating her first birthday on the day is full of type and showmanship. The first thing that appeals is her shape. She is very well balanced and maturing well. Her head is correct with a good wedge shape. Muzzle and skull ratios are good. Correct stop, well set dark eyes. Ears are set well coated nicely. The neck is of good length into well placed shoulders. The front is straight and has good bone. Feet are correct. Good depth of chest and well sprung ribs. Lovely length of back, strong loin, tail set well and carried over on the move. Well muscled rear, good angulation, nice turn of stifle. Coat in immaculate condition and well presented. Flowed round the ring with ease. BPAVNSC PG1 RBPIS.

2nd Linney’s Aescwine Cuz Everyone Talks. (Swedish Vallhund). 11 month female of absolute breed type and up close to 1. Good in profile. Good skull/muzzle, correct bite, well placed ears and good dark eye, an expression to die for. Well placed shoulders, good for bone and good feet. Nice spring of rib, deep chest, good width across the front. Level topline. Tail set and carried well. Coat in good condition with good texture to it. A good mover, nice and fluid showing correct drive.

1st Critchlow & Rudd’s Pavoskas Hiili Helmi (Finnish Lapphund). Just 2 years old, this female is showing a good profile. Very type with a good shape to head, lovely muzzle, correct bite, enough stop. Correct dark eyes of good shape. Ears set well. Good front, with nice feet. Lovely depth of chest with well sprung ribs. Strong loin, excellent hind angulation. Tail set well. Coat is in good condition with lovely texture to it. Her movement is correct with great drive. RBAVNSC.

2nd Frost, Frost Treadwell & Walmsley’s Frostisen Blakk Zeta (IKC). (Norwegian Buhund). 3 year old black female with a good balanced profile. I am particularly keen on her vert typical head shape, a rather neat wedge, with correct muzzle to skull, good stop and dark eyes of good shape. Nice chest and good shoulders, good for bone. Lovely topline, good length of back and rear end well muscled. Nice tight feet. Good tail set but wasn’t 100% keen on using it today. Moved well with drive covering the ground well.

1st Whiteman’s Ch Madincrowd Edred (Lancashire Heeler). 6 year male and superb to go over. I have judged him before and remembered his super temperament. Nothing has changed, he is quite the showman. A well balanced black and tan boy showing a very good masculine outline with no exaggerations. Good head dimensions with a lovely shape to muzzle and correct dentition. Lovely shape to eye, With well set ears of correct shape. Nice length to neck. Correct shoulders, nice front, well developed chest, Correct rib set, nice length to loin, good topline, tail set well. His movement won him the class. Moved out with typical reach and drive. Just a good honest dog, BAVNSC and G2.

2nd Lattimer’s Aus Ch Ottaba Right on Quewe ShCEx (AI) (Imp Aus) (Old English Sheepdog). 4 year old male and another I have judged before and has done well under me. I like him for his type. He is another good honest dog. very well balanced. Lovely shape skull with a good muzzle. correct stop, nice eyes. Ears set well and of correct length. Lovely neck, well placed shoulders, neat front. Nicely muscled throughout. Has a good topline and tail set well, Good rear angles with nice turn of stifle. Coat in good condition showing nice textures. A smart mover showing typical gait.

1st Ridgewell’s Konstrastas Leonhart. (White Swiss Shepherd Dog). 2 year male and reaching full maturity. His profile is good showing balance and masculinity. Good shape to head, with excellent muzzle shape, correct dentition, lovely shape to eye of good colour. Good skull and ears set well. A lovely shape to neck leading into well placed shoulders. Good in front, well developed chest and good rib set. Lovely length of back, good topline, well coupled. Rear angles are correct and good for muscle. Tail set correctly and carried well. Coat of excellent quality and correct texture. On the move showed an effortless stride. BIR

AV Pastoral Special Yearling (12, 4a)

1st Karamel Kiss Ze Shetlandu by Zaniah (Imp Cze) (see 2nd SS special yearling). I am told this win gets her the JW final point. Congratulations.

2nd Webb’s Foveaux Magic Dance (Lancashire Heeler). 1 Year old today and was reserve in avnsc special yearling in a strong line up. This black and tan male is maturing well still maintaining a good shape to him. Good shape to head, nice muzzle, ears well set and used to advantage, nicely shaped and dark eyes. Nice length to neck. well-constructed front and rear. Good depth of chest with well sprung ribs. Topline good and held well on the move. Good rear angles, showing muscle. coat in excellent condition. On the move he was showing great drive.

1st Hystep’s That’ll Do (Border Collie) See 2nd BC Special yearling). Owner advises this win gets her the last JW point. Congratulations.

2nd Harrell & Branchflower’s Beaukita’s McCrory Park (Beauceron). 4 year black and tan female with lovely profile and good shape to head and good muzzle, good shape to dark eye, ears set well. Superb expression showing a very typical expression. Has a good front, superb feet, good deep chest and excellent rib set. Shoulders set well into a good topline. Nice strong loin. Tail set well. Good for rear angulation, well muscled. Good quality coat. Really good mover pushing from the rear and extended nicely at the front.

1st Linney’s Ch Aescwine Ampelography (Swedish Vallhund). Four year old female with a superb outline. Nice in profile and well balanced. Good shape to head, nice muzzle, good teeth. Well in front and good for bone, nice feet, well placed shoulders and good rib set, Good chest, ribs set well, nicely coupled and good for rear movement. Coat was in excellent condition showing good texture. Another one with effortless drive.

2 Shetland Sheepdog Mettan-Ure’s Oakcroft Graceful Star over Savendie. A few days shy of her 1st birthday, this female is maturing well but still a little way to go. She has a pretty head with correct muzzle and dentition. Correct stop, dark eyes of correct shape. Ears set well and used to advantage. She has a good neck into decent shoulder placement, good for rib, lovely depth of chest, good topline, strong in loin, lovely rear assembly. Tail set well and carried correctly. Lacking in coat today but what was there was of correct texture. Showing correct movement.

3 Border Collie. Just six months and at her first show. This B/W female is very raw at this time but showing potential. I liked her head. Correct shape, muzzle and skull ratios are correct, well defined stop. Lovely eyes of correct shape. Another with well set ears of correct shape. Nice length to neck. Correct rib set, nice length to loin, tail set well. Coat in excellent condition with a nice texture to it. Moved out with reach and drive. Just had to concede to maturity today.

Best in Show

Was an honour to be asked to judge at this well organised and supported show. Thank you to the other judges for sending through real quality dogs for me to go over. Without going into cliches again, I would have been happy to award the top honours to any of the line up. Sadly, it can only be awarded to one and today it was Mooney’s Chesterton Viva Las Vegas. A super smart Border Terrier. Couldn’t stop watching him. 21 months old male and in super condition showing well with a super temperament. Shows a well balanced profile and just male all through. His head is stunning with the correct shape. Good muzzle, correct bite. Lovely dark eye, ears set well and of correct shape. Adequate neck, lovely lay of shoulders, correct straight front, neat feet. Good depth of chest, easy to span, lovely length of body. Tail set well and carried on the move. His rear angulation is correct and muscled well. Coat is nice and thick with correct textures. Just a good all round dog that really stood out.

Reserve Best in Show was the Border Collie. See above for critique.

Best Puppy in Show was Jackson-Haines’s Leighsham Sweeney Todd. In a line up of different breeds at differing maturity rates, this 6-month Golden Retriever male stood out. He is mature for his age and very well put together. Superb temperament and not phased by the hustle and bustle of a show. Very good in profile for his age. He has a very classic head with correct muzzle to skull ratio. Correct bite, well defined stop, lovely dark eyes set well. Nice broad skull with ears set correctly. Really sweet expression. Good strong neck, well placed shoulders. Correct front, well for bone. Really nice depth of chest. Lovely length of body with a level topline which held on the move. Well coupled. Rear angles are correct, well muscled with a nice turn of stifle. Tail is set well. His movement confirms his make up, really powering round the ring covering ground well striding out.

Reserve Best Puppy in show was the Samoyed. See above for critique.
