Tredegar & District Canine Society

Breed: Dalmatian

I would like to thank the Tredegar and District canine society committee for inviting me to judge adult handling and Dalmatians at their open show. I was delighted at the entry figures for both. I was given a warm welcome on arrival a lovely lunch, and a box of chocolates when I left. Thank you to my ring stewards who were very helpful and supportive throughout my judging. Many thanks to all the exhibitors who showed their dogs under me and accepted placings with good sportsmanship.

Adult handling age 17-35 (5, 1a)

1st Paige Edens handling a Dalmatian. Smartly dressed, polite and attentive handler. Presented her dog effortlessly and neatly all four square. This was efficiently corrected when needed. She showed the teeth clearly, ran her dog in straight lines with good tight turns and completed her pattern work correctly. Good shadow work. Her dalmatian was shown to its best advantage and looked animated throughout. Just needs to be careful she doesn’t over stretch her dog on the stand.

2nd Samantha Webster Handling a Beagle. Another well-presented handler and dog. Samantha was calm and gentle with her dog and demonstrated a lovely rapport. She made sure her dog was standing four square and corrected when needed. She ran in neat lines and completed pattern work correctly and good shadow work. Close call between 1 and 2 but I just felt 1 kept her dog more animated.

3rd Imogen Scotford-Jackson

Adult handing age 36+ (8, 3a)

1st Sarah Moore handling a Golden Retriever. Sarah was smartly dressed and had excellent rapport with her dog. She was patient and took her time to run him at the correct speed. She answered the points of a dog question correctly and completed her pattern work accurately. Good shadow work. I understand this was only her second time competing in handling so very well done.

2nd Janet Rice handling a Tibetan spaniel. Janet showed her dog to its best advantage on the table, she demonstrated an excellent rapport with her dog and talked to her dog throughout. She showed teeth well and answered her points of a dog question correctly. She moved her dog with ease in neat lines and without breaking the golden rule. Very good shadow work. I thought she would be my winner, but unfortunately, she made a mistake in her pattern work which cost her 1st place.

3rd Carla Tanswell

Dalmatians

The Dalmatians presented were of considerable variety in type and size. All dogs were friendly (I was given lots of kisses) although some were not yet used to the show ring. Keeping to the mats on the floor seemed to be a challenge for some of them, this meant some movement was erratic and did affect placings. I also noticed some dogs needed their nails trimmed. Short nails are important to maintain a tight foot and good movement.

Puppy (5)

1st Williams & Tanswell Carodal, Mr K. & Ms C. Welcome via Waltzaway. 6-month-old b/s male. A very happy and friendly young man, well-built for his age. His head is developing nicely, lovely dark eyes, he used his ears, moderate stop. Good height to length ratio, well off for bone, chest is still developing, straight legs, good feet with well arched toes. On the move, he had a good rapport with his handler, although he still has some puppy roll at this stage, he ran true, showing good reach and drive. I look forward to seeing how he develops. BPIB

2nd Cattermole and Richards, Mrs J. & Miss S.F. Anima man in the mirror for Kalvadene for Hafwenna 9-month-old l/w male. Another very happy and friendly boy. Well-muscled, well-defined withers. Correct body ratios, moderate angulation. He is nicely decorated although did have some slight dally rash. He moved well and was attentive to his handler. I preferred the head and feet of 1.

3rd Richards Hafwenna coco pops

Junior (6, 3a)

1st Richards, Miss S. F. Arthica you’ll be in my heart at Hafwenna 16month old l/w female. Feminine head with pretty decoration. She has good length of neck and lay back of shoulder, good firm topline which she held well on the move. Cat like feet with good arch to toes. On the move she was the clear winner of this class, she ran true in all directions

2nd Smart, Miss C. Wibmeister remy at Coastalcove 12-month-old b/s male. He has a masculine head with good ear carriage, lovely dark eyes which give him a kind expression. Good length of neck and firm topline. He is a little more upright in shoulder than 1and is definitely up to height. Straight legs and good feet with well arched toes. On the move, his exuberance meant he was bit erratic. He would benefit from a bigger ring to allow him to stride out more.

3rd Davies, Ms S. Hafwenna Fruit loops

Post Graduate (7)

1st Newton O Brien, Miss M. Cubalibre Solar eclipse 2 yr old l/w male. Shown in excellent condition. Pleasing overall outline on the stand. He has the appearance of being strong, muscular and fit while retaining elegance. Beautiful expression, sparkling eyes of correct amber colour. Good length of neck, well defined withers and firm topline. Well-muscled, good second thigh, correct cat-like feet. Moderate angulation fore and aft. On the move, he powered round the ring demonstrating the reach and drive required of an endurance trotter. I would like to see him in a bigger ring. BOB

2nd Richards, Miss S.F. Arthica you’ll be in my heart at Hafwenna (was 1st in Junior.) She moved well in this class but was out moved by 1

3rd Wareham & Wylde, Miss N. & Mr J. Tamilanda Gold standard at Dotsadaisy

Open (7)

1st Newton O Brien, Miss M. Cubalibre Solar eclipse . was 1st in PG BOB

2nd Williamson, Mrs E L. Shydally Ultimate edition. 3yr old b/s male. I have judged this dog before. Masculine all through with very attractive decoration. He has a bright expression. Shown in hard condition. Good head proportions and length of neck, firm top line, chest is deep with plenty of lung room. Well off for bone and he has good feet. I would prefer a better tail carriage as this does affect the overall outline. He moved steadily and true. He is more mature than 1 but was slightly less enthusiastic on the move today. RBOB
