North Devon Canine Association

I would like to thank the committee for the invitation to judge at this show. There were some beautiful dogs here today and I was spoilt for choice in the final line ups.

All dogs were judged on their ability to do the job they were bred for and individually against the breed standard. I was looking for dogs that were sound on the move and balanced in their construction.

My best in show was Stirk’s Irish Water Spaniel Nyllaup Akoya Pearl for Grakar who had an amazing outline and did not disappoint on the move. This dog was strongly built compact smart and upstanding just as required in the breed standard with a head of good size Dome skull long muzzle smooth face large nose correct liver colour eyes and is correct shape size and colour the neck set into shoulders and was long enough to carry the head well above the level of the back. Shoulders powerful and sloping the chest was deep a reasonable width between forelegs, the ribs were well carried back and well sprung behind the shoulder giving the correct barrel chest. The hindquarters and had a low set hock. The tail was short did not reach the hock joint. Moving freely and soundly with reach and drive. The coat on the body was dense free it was abundant. This dog stood out for me due to her clear affection for his handler and her stable disposition.

My reserve best in show was the Shar Pei Bragg’s CH Loopang’s Back in Business (AI). I was not at all surprised to discover this was a champion. This dog stood out as it oozed breed type. Compact short coupled and squarely built a harsh bristly coat with relatively loose skin. This dog was calm and independent it had a relatively large but not disproportionate to the body head with flat skull stop the length from nose to stop approximately equal in length stop to occiput. The eyes were medium size and almond shaped. Ears were triangular in shape pointing towards the eyes. The neck was medium length set well on the shoulders. The elbows were close to the body we're straight. The height at the withers was approximately equal from behind the point of shoulders to the point of buttock. This dog moved freely and was very balanced.

My Best Puppy in Show was the Minature Smooth Haired Dachshund Mrs S Ergis’s Brogansian Battlecry for Siouxline. ‘Intelligent, lively, courageous to the point of rashness, obedient’ is what the standard calls for and for me this puppy exudes these characteristics. Low to the ground with strong forequarters and forelegs. This puppy wanted to go to work and had the strong jaw and a nose that was definitely ready to scent. This dog was outstanding on the move and absolutely drew my eye.

My Reserve Best Puppy in Show was the Lancashire Heeler – who for me was the puppy to beat on the day and was close up to the dachshund.

My Best Veteran in Show was the outstanding Cardigan Corgi who won the Pastoral Group. This is clearly a dog who has matured slowly and is now absolutely in his prime. What a show off – this dog could go all day and proved this today with endurance in immense heat.

My Reserve Best Veteran in Show was the Boxer Mrs J A Richard’s Markinshell Pombear at Dajoxx . At 7.5 years this dog is another in his prime. I have a soft spot for Boxers and this dog had a square outline with strong bone and great nobility. He was lively and clearly loyal to his owner and had a lovely head with dark brown eyes and well set ears of correct shape. His undershot jaw indicated a powerful bite. He moved well to clinch his spot.

My Reserve Best of Breed in Show was the Beardie from AVNSC Pastoral Mrs K Axford’s Bramblemead Bollinger Boy JW. He really stepped up in this competition and showed the fluid movement I was looking for.

Best Champion in Show was the Basset Hound Mrs C Turner’s CH Devonhound Who’s That Girl JW ShCEx OSW. Another breed I have a soft spot for and a breed that has grown on me every time I have judged them. This bitch has good substance, is well balanced and is definitely strong, active and capable of great endurance. I loved her.

My Reseve Best Champion in Show was the Alaskan Malamute Miss & Mrs Smith’s CH Cash The Check Shamanrock at Showshoes (IMP CZE) JW. This dog was heavily boned and powerfully built he was not too compact nor short on the leg. He has a good head and is very balanced with a straight back with correct slope. His loins were well muscled. He is well schooled and immaculately shown but did not have the character shining through like the Basset.

Pastoral Group

I would like to thank the pastoral exhibitors for persevering in the heat. It was a long day and the shade disappeared from the ring very quickly. There were no flock guardians present today and so all dogs shown were bred to herd and some to guard as well. Herding dogs need to have balanced free flowing movement that is enduring and will allow them to work all day. I was delighted to find so many dogs today that I felt could genuinely do the job they were bred for and this made some decisions very difficult. The pastoral group was well represented with many breeds today and this resulted in some fantastic line ups and a strong group. My group winner was the amazing 11.5 year old cardigan corgi Siviter’s Rubegud Takin the Mick ShCM, VW who just got better and better. His consistency and stamina resulted in him being Best Veteran in Show in stiff competition. Also of note was my Group 2 the beautiful 12 year old Shetland Sheepdog Hirst’s Sundark Simply a Star VW who is an absolute credit to her owner. A real sweetheart who did not stop showing and could absolutely still work. Group 3 was the Lancashire Heeler. Webb’s Foveaux Magic Dance one to watch and my Reserve Best Puppy in Show. Group 4 was the White Swiss Shepherd Dog Ridgewell’s Kontrastas Leonhart.

Pastoral Puppy Group

Group 1 was the Lancashire Heeler who later became Reserve Best Puppy in Show. This is an outstanding Heeler in my opinion and I hope to see him achieve great things. Group 2 was the Beauceron Rollason’ Cezarblue Meniko. Group 3 was the Australian Shepherd Dog Scanlan’s Accra Forest Moon over Amenbury and Group 4 was the Shetland Sheepdog Haensel’s Frecia Blue Saffire at Sherkarl.
