Canadian Eskimo Dog

As a Canadian, it was both a privilege and a pleasure to assess the Canadian Eskimo Dogs at this show, and I was particularly encouraged by the strong turnout of exhibitors. What a wonderful entry, with an impressive range of colours and a good spread of age groups, which provided a well-rounded overview of the breed. I was especially taken by the excellent temperament throughout. Many of the dogs were clearly enjoying their time in the ring, displaying a happy and willing attitude, while some also demonstrated the breed’s characteristic independence in a manner that was both engaging and entirely in keeping with their nature. It was particularly pleasing to observe well-muscled dogs, indicative of animals that are not only shown but also maintained in good working condition something that is essential for a breed of this heritage. Overall construction in many exhibits reflected strength, substance, and functionality consistent with the demands historically placed upon them. Coat presentation, understandably, varied somewhat due to the challenging weather conditions; however, this did not detract from the overall quality of the entry, and exhibitors are to be commended for presenting their dogs as well as possible under the circumstances. Importantly, most exhibits conveyed the true character of the breed resilient, capable, and functional Arctic working dogs.

P (1,0) 1 Hooley Akna Zira A rambunctious six-month-old male whose happy, enthusiastic temperament was hard to ignore. Very typey, with a lovely coat and overall outline in keeping with the breed. In winning the puppy class his movement was somewhat difficult to fully assess. Despite his youth, he made a strong impression with his energy and presence. In the ring for Best Puppy in Breed, he settled well and showed improved focus, allowing for a clearer assessment. He moved with strength and purpose, clean on the down and back and in profile, demonstrating good efficiency and fluidity.

SpY (2,0) 1 Hooley Platinum A very solid male with a well-developed, masculine head, lovely expression, and focused gaze. He demonstrated fluid, efficient movement, covering the ground with a purposeful, brisk trot reflective of a dog built for endurance and hard work. A well-constructed and typical exhibit.

2 Pyper Snoqualmie Short Stirling Another solid male, showing a strong, well-developed chest and good reach on the move. He presented a dense, correct coat and an excellent, steady disposition. A pleasing and capable example of the breed. Both were quality specimens, making this a close decision; however, 1 took the class on his more fluid and efficient movement, covering the ground with greater ease and purpose.

L (2,0) 1 Bailey Asiaq Vallery for Akna This bitch caught the eye on entering the ring, presenting a thick, rich coat, good bone, and a solid, powerful frame in keeping with the breed’s requirement for strength and endurance. Well-constructed and true to type, she moved with strength and purpose, showing efficient, balanced movement. She had a very pleasing head, taking the class with everything fitting well together.

2 Hooley Snoqualmie Fairy Firefly A very nice younger female (approximately 18 months) with a pleasing overall outline, clearly enjoying herself in the ring, which made it difficult to fully assess her movement. A promising exhibit, and I would welcome the opportunity to see her again with greater maturity and steadiness.

O (4,1) 1 Bailey IrCh Akna Panda, BOB A majestic male who stood out in the Open class. He presented a powerful, well-proportioned frame, with a strong rear, heavily muscled thighs, and solid feet, clearly built for endurance and sustained work. His head was masculine and in keeping with the breed, complementing his overall strength and substance. On the move, he demonstrated considerable power, covering the ground with a purposeful, brisk trot while maintaining balance and efficiency. Striking in overall appearance, he combined strength, construction, and true breed type, making him a convincing and deserving Best of Breed.

2 Bailey IrCh Qimguta Judas by Akna Another impressive dog, full of energy and clearly built for hard work, with size and form in keeping with the breed’s purpose. He presented good bone, a strong neck, and a pleasing head, contributing to a powerful overall outline. He moved with strength and purpose, demonstrating the capability expected of a working sled dog. At this stage, he would benefit from further development of chest to match his overall frame, which may come with maturity. A close contender to the class winner.
