Southern Pointer Club
The Southern Pointer Club
Sunday 16th March 2025
I would like to thank the officers and committee for inviting me to judge my beloved breed The Pointer at Southern Pointer club. I would like to thank my two fantastic stewards Cris and Dyllis, keeping things moving.
I was very pleased with the quality of my winners and some very exciting puppies starting off their show career and the other end, some youthful veterans, overall showing our breed is in great shape.
A couple of observations, our breed standard asks for a series of graceful curves, strong lissom appearance. I was looking for a moderate dog of type, strength, soundness and giving the appearance of able to do the job it is intended, a full day on a grouse moor. Breeders, please watch size, I felt some lacked the elegance and grace, typical of the breed. Furthermore, pointers are a galloping breed required to have sloping pasterns and correct oval feet, I noticed some with upright pasterns and small round feet, sadly this inhibits movement and the dogs ability to work, and therefore not the free-flowing powerful gait that is the pointer. That said, this was the minority, and my winners and top honours were a joy.
