Chelmsford & District Canine Society - Open Show

Date: 5th May 2025

Venue: Brook Farm Training Centre, Stapleford Abbots, Essex.

Judge: Kathleen E Burnell (Fieldbank)

I would like to thank the Club for the invitation to judge their Pastoral breeds and the group. I received a warm welcome and the friendly atmosphere continued throughout the day; we even had the VE Day flying display team unexpectedly honour us with their presence low flying in formation during the afternoon directly above the venue! Thanks also goes to my ring steward Marion for her efficient organising skills throughout the day.

I previously judged for this Society in December 1988 forging my way through a snowstorm from the East Midlands to judge their open show, I judged 39 Rough Collies and 45 Border Collies. How times/entries have changed.

I was very pleased with the overall entry today and thank the exhibitors for both supporting the club and giving me the opportunity to assess their dogs. I found some quality exhibits and thank the competitors for accepting my decision making. I was very pleased to see my group winning Beardie POTTERDALE ROYAL SAPPHIRE OF ATHERLEIGH also take Best In Show.

Group 4 CH BROOKLYNSON JANE RUSSELL OF OAKESTELLE

PASTORAL PUPPY GROUP

Group 1 Benton & Belmans, Miss MK & Ms E BLAMORDEN DOUBLE OR QUITS OF OAKESTELLE Smooth Collie. Maturing well for her 11mths. Lovely clean lines on this blue merle. I found her sound throughout with a firm back, well sprung ribs and good depth to the chest. Good length of body, nicely angled over the rear and well let down hocks with good tail set. Well-proportioned correct wedge shaped head and medium sizes almond eyes. Movement was very solid, smooth and light footed. I feel sure she has a promising future ahead of her in the ring.

Group 3 OAKCROFT GRACEFUL STAR OVER SAVENDIE

Group 4 JEZEBI JEZ

A.V.N.S.C. PASTORAL

Puppy 5/1abs

1st Cummins, JEZEBI JEZ, G.S.D. 8mths. Long-coated bitch, full of energy and character. A well balanced clean cut skull with dark eyes and correct bite. Well angulated over the forequarters and rear with good bone. Good reach on the move. Sound construction just needs to mature and firm up.

2nd King & Jennings, ORIGINAL BEAUTY LADY ORLEANSNOW (IMP CZE) Samoyed 7mths. Walked in the ring and stood to perfection. Pleasing head with a broad flat skull and well shaped eyes. A balanced body, firm for her age, just looking a little square at the moment. Well set tail and sound movement.

3rd Dodd’s, TANELLIS DARE TO LOVE, Swedish Vallhund B 7mths

Special Yearling 2/0abs

1st Mills’s KERJALEE ALL ABOUT ME, O.E.S. 21mths. A good square, natural outline on this bitch showing typical balance. A pleasing head pattern with correct eye set and colour. Good length of neck, well laid shoulders, good spring of ribs. Hocks set low with tight feet. Typical sound movement dropping her head a little with the pace. A little worried in the ring today but this did not distract from her obvious qualities. Reserve Best A.V.N.S.C.

2nd Sandells’s, AUSTMANS IN MY ELEMENT AT SHAWMUT, Australian Cattle Dog, 15mths. I would like to have seen this bitch with more bone and body. A steady mover who did not show me a free and easy gait.

1st Kings’s ALTUSSI ALL THAT RAZZMATAZZ FOR GHOSTEYE, Australian Shepherd. A correct size, well presented bitch with a good head, correctly set almond shaped eyes, moderate stop and good pigmentation with a moderate length of neck. Movement was free and easy but I would prefer tighter shoulders. Rear action ok.

2nd Chapmans’s KONATIAN BAGGY TROUSERS, G.S.D. A good size dog with plenty of bone and correct body proportions. A clean cut balanced head of good width with a strong muzzle and full dentition. Good length of neck and well laid shoulders, good reach in front movement, moving away he appeared a little loose about the hocks. Tail well set and of good length.

.3rd Bevis’s BEABEARDIES BLUE MONDAY.

Post Graduate 3/0abs

1st O’Connell’s POTTERDALE ROYAL SAPPHIRE OF ATHERLEIGH. Having had some very excitable youngsters in the previous classes this team was the calm after the storm. My eye was caught by the presentation and overall balanced proportions. She has a feminine expression, a correct, neat head pattern in balance with her body. Good pigmentation, eye colour could be a shade darker nevertheless still matching her coat. A strong neck flowing into the withers giving a smooth level outline from head to the gently sloping croup. Front construction showed moderate angulation with a good depth of chest, hindquarters equally good. Well boned throughout and well bent stifles showing a correctly positioned stance. Correct tail set and coat texture. On the move I was not disappointed, supple, smooth and long reaching as the standard requires. This 2-year-old blue bitch was the star of the show today and I was pleased to award her Best of Breed, Group 1 Pastoral and watch her qualities shine through to be awarded Best in Show.

2nd Swaby’s KILTONDALE HOT FAVOURITE FOR MARSBY, A 2-year-old slate bitch with a good head and expression, well laid shoulders and correct body length, good angles to the rear with a gentle slope over the croup and firm well let down hocks.

Presented in super condition she has a very pleasing head pattern, clean wedge shape and flat skull with strong underjaw. A well-proportioned body and deep chest. A lovely firm topline which she kept on the move. Well angulated forequarters, equally good at the rear.
