Chesapeake Bay Retriever Club

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever Club Open Show 14th September 2025

Thank you very much to the club for asking me to judge and I very much enjoyed my day with some very nice exhibits to go over. There was a lovely atmosphere and competitors accepted my placings with good humour and sportsmanship. Thank you to my two excellent stewards. Several exhibits were out of coat on the day which after a long hot summer was not surprising. Most dogs were very nice in profile with otherwise good coats and correct pigmentation to harmonise with their coat colour. Although at speed it is expected that legs will converge many exhibits were moving overly close behind although other wise moved well so something in the breed to keep an eye on.

1 Mahon-Hunns, Middleton and Haskin’s Susquidilla Yankee Shadow (imp USA) 8mo dog with very nice head correct eye placement and good colour. Excellent coat. Correct depth of chest and spring of rib. Well boned with good strong feet. Good front angulation I would prefer a little more hind angulation and moved a touch close behind although otherwise sound on the move. RBPIS

1.Playle and Thomas’s Riptide Gentleman’s Relish Very well balanced 2yo with correct angulation front and rear. Excellent coat topline and tail set. Good depth of chest and spring of rib. Moved particularly well in profile on good bone and strong feet. He has quite a strong (for me) masculine head but he has a nice expression and his muzzle and head length are spot on with correct pigmentation. Overall, a very nice boy and very typical of the breed. Pleased to award him BOB 2 Royle’s Battsrock Are you Ready Well constructed 4 yo with good angulation. Pleasing head, Good spring of rib and depth of chest. Good strong feet and bone. Moved a bit close behind and the first placed was in better coat today.

Well-constructed all through and moved well. Good topline and tail set. Good bone and neat feet. 2. Murray’s Takoda Nathan VW Mid Bown dog. kind head well proportioned. Good bone and feet and length of leg and excellent coat. Just preferred the front of the first placed. 3.
