Breed: Gundogs, Group, Stakes & BIS

Bolton & Deane Kennel Association Open Show Sunday 17 August 2025

Many thanks to the committee for their kind hospitality and this wonderful invitation to judge the Gundogs, Group and my first general Open Show BIS. I had the most fantastic day. My 2 very able stewards kept things moving nicely along for me, so thanks to Pauline and Jodie. And, of course, thanks to the many exhibitors who gave me the opportunity to go over their beautiful dogs and for accepting my decisions most graciously.

German Shorthaired Pointer Puppy

1st - Best Puppy, Puppy Group 2

Brown & Burns’ Magregor Four Letter Word for Pothouse

A lovely class of puppies, headed by this handsome young male who stood out for his size, substance, and overall breed type. The most together of the three, he displays a classic head that is developing well, with good depth to brisket, sufficient forechest, ample bone, and neat, compact feet. He is clean through the neck and shoulders, held his topline both standing and moving, and drove well from a well muscled rear with short, strong hocks.

2nd - Brown & Burns’ Magregor Super Nude Around Pothouse

Not quite as advanced in development as his littermate, lacking some of the depth and substance at this stage, and not quite as steady on the move. However, the essentials are all there he just needs a little more time to mature, which he certainly has.

3rd - Brown & Filby’s Desjiem Rebel Rebel (AI)

Junior

1st - Brown & Burns’ Magregor Four Letter Word for Pothouse - Repeat of 1st in Puppy.

2nd - Brown & Burns’ Magregor Super Nude Around Pothouse – Repeat of 2nd in Puppy.

Post Graduate

1st - Bretherton’s Seasham Ring My Bell

A 20-month-old young lady who is maturing very nicely. She presents correct proportions, a moderate forechest, and a good neck flowing into well laid shoulders. Balanced angulation both front and rear, with enough bone. Feet could be a little tighter, but she held a strong topline both stacked and on the move. Moved out positively, though slightly close behind going away.

Open

1st - Best of Breed, Group 1, Reserve Best in Show

Brown & Filby’s Sh Ch Winterwell That’ll Do for Desjiem JW

A mature 5-year-old bitch in peak condition who absolutely pulled out all the stops and really pushed BIS hard. She presented a stunning picture, standing in her gleaming short coat. Beautiful to go over, with everything flowing seamlessly. Correct head, strong neck leading into well laid shoulders, well sprung ribs, a short loin, and a rock solid topline. She has the bone, substance, and muscle tone to match, with balanced angulation front and rear. Excellent width through both first and second thighs, short hocks, and she moved around the ring with effortless accuracy and drive, like she could go all day.

Pointer Puppy

1st - Best Puppy, Puppy Group 3

Radcliffe’s Sniperay Secret Affair

A class of very promising puppies, headed up by this lovely young bitch who presented an elegant, flowing outline and didn’t disappoint on the move. She has a correct head with desired slight dish and defined stop. Her muscular neck flows into long, well laid shoulders. Brisket reaches to the elbow, correct oval bone, neat feet, and held her topline both standing and moving. Used her tail to good advantage on the move, enhancing the overall picture.

2nd - Booth’s Lundgarth Ticket to Fly

Another quality youngster with a well-proportioned head, defined stop, and a long neck with slight arch. She has lovely balanced angulation with good width to first and second thighs with muscle developing. Held her topline nicely, but not quite as positive on the move as 1st, showing a slightly high-stepping front action.

3rd - Bush’s Piasharn Anny Bonny

Junior

1st - Booth & Oddie’s Lundgarth Fly the Flag

Littermate to the 2nd placed puppy, and very similar remarks apply. She has a good head and neck, long shoulders, and correct substance throughout. Ribs are well sprung, short coupled, and a beautifully developed rear with muscular thighs and well turned stifles. Feet are OK, and she moved out soundly and confidently.

Post Graduate

1st - Bush’s Piasharn Breaking the Law

A 2-year-old bitch who appeared slightly uncomfortable when stacked, but relaxed on the move, holding her topline with ease. Attractive head with good neck and shoulder construction. She has better angulation and tighter feet than 2nd. Tail well set and used effectively on the move.

2nd - Booth’s Piasharn Rocka Rolla

A 5-year-old male of good type undeniably masculine in appearance and presence. Correct head with defined stop and pronounced occiput, high set ears, and developed lips. Strong neck fits cleanly into well laid shoulders. Straight front legs with good oval bone, well muscled throughout, and moved with drive and purpose.

A stunning bitch in peak condition. She is beautiful in profile, with an appealing, balanced head and soft, gentle expression. Brisket reaches the elbow; ribs are well sprung and carried well back to a short, slightly arched loin. Her rear is well developed with excellent muscle tone. Moved with a steady, ground covering, effortless stride.

Retriever Flatcoat Puppy

3rd - Pierce’s Wychwizard Forester at Tarnmillcrag

Post Graduate

1st - Pierce’s Wychwizard Forester at Tarnmillcrag

Placed 3rd in the previous class and littermate to the 2nd placed bitch there. More relaxed here, allowing for a better assessment. His movement improved and was more coordinated. Good head with kind expression, strong neck, good body, correct bone, legs and feet. Still slightly untidy coming toward, but overall, there is a lot to like here.

2nd - Walker & Robert’s Gloi Dubh Lady Muck JW

A 5-year-old bitch who presents a pleasing overall picture, though not quite the balance of the winner, being a little shorter in neck. Shown in lovely coat and condition. Good bone and substance, with good legs and feet. Moderate angulation. Moved positively, although a touch wide in front.

Open

1st - Walker & Robert’s Gloi Dubh Christopher Robin JW

A handsome male who wasn’t cooperating today, making things difficult for his handler. Nonetheless, he impressed for his overall make, shape, and substance. Well muscled and shown in excellent condition. Correct head, neck, and shoulder. Balanced angulation, good legs, though feet could be a little tighter. Movement was a bit untidy as he appeared distracted and searching for his owner, but he’s a quality dog.

Retriever Golden Puppy

1st - Best Puppy

Forrest’s Orlagold Major Tom

A well-made 10-month-old male in beautiful coat. Balanced and well chiselled head and skull with good breadth, muzzle has width, and depth. He has a defined stop, dark eye and nose and ears of good size and set. Neck of good length, with appropriate muscle for his age. Straight, well boned legs and neat, round feet. Well laid shoulders with good return of upper arm. Ribs are deep, sprung and carried well back into a short loin and he held his topline. Moved well in front and profile, although a little weak behind at present, I expect this will improve as he matures and muscles up.

Junior

1st - Grindey’s Bramstead Lovely Jubbly

A lovely lady with a beautiful headpiece and kind expression. Balanced in profile and good to go over, having all the attributes of well laid shoulders, good bone, level topline, depth and spring to ribs, short loin and balanced angulation. She moved positively though just a shade close behind.

2nd - Marshall’s Cadwst Spring River

A 15-month-old male with a pleasing profile, though I would prefer a slightly longer foreface to better balance the skull. In full coat and developing well in body and muscle tone. He has lovely bone, good feet and balanced angulation. Moved more positively behind than the winner.

Post Graduate

1st - Harvey’s Shebelta Sweet Charlotte JW

This bitch was very appealing. Balanced head with dark pigment to eye rims and nose, and defined occiput. Muscular neck of good length set smoothly into front assembly. Long shoulder blade, well laid back, with equal return of upper arm. Well boned legs and round feet. Level topline with good depth of chest and well-sprung ribs carried back to a short, strong loin. At nearly 4-year-old this is a quality bitch with much to like. Appealing in head, with good length and strength through neck and into a well constructed front. Strong topline, lovely bone, good depth and width to body, well ribbed back. Carried too much weight today, which slightly detracted from overall balance. Moved well with purpose.

An 18-month-old male with lovely breed type. Well proportioned head with correct expression, correct front assembly, good body, and excellent bone. Otter tail correctly set and used well.
