Welsh Terrier Club

Many thanks to the Welsh Terrier Club for inviting me to judge at their rescheduled Open Show this year. A club with a strong community membership and it was wonderful to see so many spectators with their pet Welsh in attendance. I would strongly encourage more members to consider showing their Welsh and learning about trimming. There were a number of spectator dogs in attendance who would not look out of place in a show class. Numbers are decreasing year on year for the breed and there are a number of wonderful breeders and exhibitors who would happily assist any new exhibitors in their showing journey.

Postgraduate Dog: 1. Whale and Cantrell’s Carajon Goroeswr Bach Ni. Correct size and cobby 5 year old dog with keen, alert expression. A strong neck leading into short ribbing. Good bend of stifle leading into low hock. Tight, well padded paws. Moved true fore and aft, used ears well. Res. Best Dog. 2. Nitka’s Omar von Granitfelsen. Up to size 4 year old dog with a better tailset than 1 but longer in rib and standing wider in front. Ears not used to best advantage today and seemed unsettled on the move. Excellent wire coat and well trimmed by handler.

Limit Dog: 1. Crabtree’s Tedtree Diamond Geezer. Correct size, well ribbed 2 year old dog with small dark eye and keen expression, good ears that framed the strong head well. Tail well set and strong rear. A little wide at the shoulder on the move.

Open Dog: 1. Schoneberg’s Paperman Arteon. Exceptional example of a 2 year old workmanlike square Welsh of true breed standard proportions. Expressive head with tight ears that were used well on the move. True fore and aft, this dog had purpose and drive. Expertly trimmed and handled in the ring. Best Dog. BIS.

Veteran D/B: 1. Humphries’ Serbonche Breuddwyn Mam. 12 year old dog who has the expression and coat of a far younger dog. Good head with dark eye. Clean neck leading to short rib. Strode out well and steady on the move. BVIS. 2. Watkin-Jones’ Little Blossom of the Sky. Up to size 10 year old bitch longer in hock and rib than 1. Good head with feminine expression, not using ears well today. Tail well set and steady on the move.

Puppy Bitch: 1. Karov’s Ivalley Maria Girl. Well balanced, short-backed 11 month old bitch with good angle of stifle, elegant neck and well set tail. Feminine, dark eye and good ears which she used well on the move. Well trimmed with good wire coat of rich colour. BPIS.

Postgraduate Bitch. 1. Hayakawa’s Charleston JP Kaffir Lily. One year old bitch of correct size and proportion. Feminine head with small dark almond eye leading into well placed shoulders. Short-ribbed body with excellent bend of stifle, leading to low hocks. Excellent energy and drive on the move, was true fore and aft. Expertly trimmed and handled. Best Bitch. Res BIS. 2. Karov’s Cunnings Yellow Submarine. Well-structured correct sized bitch with elegant expression and similar feminine head to 1. Good length of neck and good bend of stifle with decent tail well set. Good harsh coat, trimmed well. Flyaway ears let her down today with less enthusiasm on the move than 1.
