Many thanks for asking me to judge the gundogs at this well organised and hospitable show.

Gundog Group

It was a pleasure to see such a full group with some quality dogs. The group was awarded to the Sussex Spaniel ShCh Gainsmill Lilly Lunar at Crumbledor. I really fell for this well built bitch in the breed class and couldn’t get past her in the group. Very typical head with good width to her skull which is nicely curved. Good strength to muzzle with nice cushioning. Good relatively large eye of good colour and well set large ears completed her expression. Correct length of neck into well placed shoulders. Good depth of chest and well boned with good round foot. Super width of loin and strong through the body. Lovely muscular hindquarters. Moved like a Sussex should. She impressed me and I was delighted to award her the group. The NE clearly has depth in the spaniel breeds as group 2 was the ESS bitch Chanangel music of the night. Another I had liked earlier in the morning and impressed for her balance and moderateness. Nothing flash about her but she is just well constructed through. Pleasing length of head which is clean in back skull and not overdone. Nicely chiselled with kind dark eye of correct shape, which together with her well set leathers which are well-furnished completed her expression. Good through the neck and shoulder, with well laid shoulder, correct body proportions with well sprung rib. Moderate hindquarters and good tight feet. Super front action in the move when she gets going. At times she didn’t help her young handler but did enough here to annexe group. Sympathetically handled. 2. Group 3 went to the Spanish Water Dog Pabiagos Sergio Sinduda JW. B/W Parti. Pleased for size and overall shape. Good strength of head of correct proportions and planes. Well set dark eye and correctly set ear. Good strength of neck which is not too long. Pleasing front assembly. Well sprung. Level topline. Well muscled rear. Very good and typical jacket. Free and easier mover. Finally group 4 went to the WSS. Sh Ch Chanangel Jo Sugden JW. Upstanding male of good size and shape. Pleasing head and expression. Overall presents a very typical outline. Good bone and feet. Pleasing depth of brisket well ribbed up. Pleasing moderate angulation fore and rear. Moved with drive but could be a little tidier coming towards.

Gundog Puppy Group.

Nice line up pf puppies. First was the ESS. Chanangel Yorkshire Honey. Very promising L/W. Beautiful head and expression. Superbly constructed forehand with lovely bone and good tight foot. Excels through the neck and shoulder. Well sprung. Correct topline. Pleasing rear angulation. In excellent jacket and A1 condition. Still very much a puppy but when she got it together, she threw out a lovely silhouette on the move and footfall was spot on. Should have a bright future. Delighted to hear that she later went on to BPIS. Congratulations! In second place came the Mycalleys Itsallaboutmeme. Quality buff American Cocker spaniel who immediately appeals for her overall shape, balance, and deportment. Pleasing head which is well rounded and with ideal skull to muzzle ratio. Super round expressive eye. Well placed leathers which are well furnished. Super neck into shoulder. Not at all narrow in front which many can be. Good riband short coupling. Ideal topline. Could be a fraction more angulated in the rear. With maturity I am sure she will be a highflier. PG3. Cocker. B/Roan. Super prospect and did enough to annexe BOB in the breed. Typical head piece with lovely eye and overall expression. Good neck and shoulder. Pleasing front with super bone and lovely tight foot. Has that much required rib which really scored him high for me. Correct topline and importantly correct tail set for the breed. Moved very well and is in good condition and jacket. Typical cockery action. Moved very well indeed to annexe group 3. Group 4. WSS (critique under breed)

Golden Retrievers

Graduate. 1. Baricia Bella Divino. Smart dog. Won here on his very typey head and expression. Good broad skull which is in proportion to his muzzle which is of good depth, and nicely chiselled. Good eye with nice dark rims. Pleasing through the neck and shoulder. Good deep rib. Correct forehand angulation matched by good moderate rear angles. In good jacket. Carries his tail a little high on the move if one is critical but moved well overall. BOB. 2. Hoaaloha Kealoha JW Another nice Golden of quality. Good make and shape and lovely overall outline. Level and short coupled. Good rear. Moved well. Would just prefer her a fraction broader in the skull. 3. Astleyfold Snowy Bell

Limit. 1. Jaymardy Sweet Caroline JW. Quality bitch. Lots to like about her. Overall has a lovely outline. She is well bodied and short coupled. Good tail set and carriage. Pleasing head and expression. Good front assembly. Pleasing bend of stifle and good second thigh. Could be tidier going away.

Open 1. Hoaaloha Kealoha. JW. Won here on size, type and overall coat colour. Pleasing head and expression. Good eye. Well set ears of good size. Could have a fraction more neck for me to complete his outline. Good deep rib. Well sprung. Correct topline. Moved well. 2.Palton Pavarotti. Heavier type to 1. For me a little strong in his head and his colour is bordering on red. Nevertheless, he had the best bone and the best feet of the entry. For a big dog he is effortless in his movement and has super drive. Carries his tail a fraction high. In the best of condition. 3. Kenleap Bridlington Beauty.

Weimaraner

PostGraduate 1. Sunshine of Your Love JW. Nice bitch with lots to like. Overall exhibits a good shape. Good for size. Pleasing head of good length. Strong in muzzle but does not lose any femininity. Keen eye. Good length of leathers which are set high. Decent length of neck into well laid shoulders. Good overall proportions. Nice bone. Well sprung and not overdone behind. Good colour. Moved soundly. BOB. 2. Brownbank Willow with Raystans. Different in style to 1. Lovely head and expression. Good substance and bone. Overall body proportions correct. Correct in colour. Well muscled through. Could be better in topline. 3. Sireva Maze. This bitch is quite beautiful. Just needs a fraction more confidence.

Open 1. Alladin’s Genie. Upstanding male. Pleasing quality head. Good eye and ear. Good for substance. Deep ribbed and well spring. Correct level topline. Correct colour and in A1 condition. For me he could have a fraction more length of upper arm and be a fraction less wide in the front.

Bracco Italiano

PostGraduate. 1. Callaiscroft Fait Accompli. A very raw 6 and a half month old in a breed that needs some time to full maturity. However, I really liked him for type and style. His head is of correct proportions and his head planes are as required. Good nose. Correct ear set and length. Enough neck and good front assembly. Well sprung. Topline needs to settle. Difficult to assess on the move but when he settled was very typical.

Open. Not an easy decision here. Two nice and typey Bracco’s 1. Braccorions You Win Again from Brevathos. Won here on her head planes and upper arm. Very good for type. Moved very well with very typical action. Underline needs to tighten a fraction after her phantom. 2. Whitgun U’cant Touch This at Walwal. Not belittled by second place. He is a smart quality dog of excellent type and of good size. In super condition. Correct body proportions and topline. Better underline than 1. Moved well.

Labrador Retrievers

Open. 1. Dunnabbey Step Outside. Yellow male. Nice for overall size. Pleasing head with good breadth of skull. Kind eye of correct colour. Good neck into shoulder. Decent front with good bone and feet. Level. For me I would prefer him more ribbed back and shorter and stronger in the loin. Lovely thick tail, which is well clothed. Moved soundly.

Cockers Spaniels

PostGraduate. 1.Shaggylands Midnight Train. Puppy Group 3. 2. Sandanca Lionheart to Colmeir. This young tri-colour dog is not helped by his colour and markings. However, when you get your hand on him, he is much better than on initial inspection. Head of good length and which is pleasingly chiselled and with clean back skull. Full bright eye. Well set ears of good length. Good shoulder. Very good bone and feet. Super rib. Correct tail set. Nicely angulated rear. Moved well with typical action. Could do with a smaller food bowl! 3. Sandanca Taking Chances for Dreamist. Another nice one.

Open. 1. Timbric Doris Day. JW. Typey B/roan. Nice to go over. Good head and body proportions. Pleasing head and expression. Nice bone. Good rib. Correct topline and tail set. For me she was very nice but there could have been a little more of her overall. Moved soundly although needs to put a little more effort in. In good jacket and condition.

American Cocker Spaniels

PostGraduate. 1 Mycalleys Sirocco. Quality male with pleasing head and expression. Good well rounded skull with lovely round dark eye. Well set ears which are well covered. Correct skull to muzzle ratio. Good length of neck. Enough width in front and correct at the elbow. Correct topline without being exaggerated. Well sprung. Pleasing hind angulation. Moved very well. 2. Mycalleys Itsallaboutmeme. Winner of PG2.

Open. 1. Mycalleys Koko JW. Black bitch of 2 years of age. Very nice for overall type. Typical head piece with lovely eye and ear. Good for size and in no way toy-like, yet most definitely a female. Good rib and well ribbed back. Short strong loin. Correct topline. Moved very well with wonderful reach in front. BOB.

English Springer Spaniels

PostGraduate. Two very nice puppies. 1. Chanangel Yorkshire Honey PG1 2. Chanangel Yorkshire with Bethersden. Quality liver and white. Slightly more mature than his litter sister. Nicely made through with many of the qualities Yorkshire Honey. Very pleasing head piece with good eye and ear. Excellent front assembly. Good bone and feet. Well sprung. In Super jacket and in A1 condition. Sound mover. Just preferred the overall expression of 1 at this stage. Two promising youngsters.

Open. 1. Chanangel music of the night. Winner of G2. 2. Calvdale with Respect. Upstanding L/W who I have admired and done well for before. Quality upstanding dog with a lovely typical head piece of pleasing proportions. Good width and depth to his foreface. Nice dark almond shaped eye and correctly shaped ears of good length. Good neck into good shoulder. Well off for bone with superb tight feet. Well sprung. Moderately angulated at the stifle. In super condition. I wouldn’t want him any bigger. I just preferred the overall expression and reach of 1.

Welsh Springer Spaniels

This was a nice class. Some promising Welsh here. Open. 1. Sh Ch Chanangel Jo Sugden JW. Group 4. 2. Chanangel White Rose. This is a really smart bitch who is almost 12 months. Full of herself which I quite liked. She is of lovely breed type through with a very typical head and expression for a Welsh. Lovely warm hazel eye. Good leathers of correct size and shape. Nice through the neck and shoulder. Well sprung and well coupled. Moderately angulated rear with parallel hocks, played her handler up a little on the move but when she gets into her stride she moves very well and with good rear drive. I liked her a lot. Puppy Group 4. 3. Chanangel Royal Ascot

Sussex Spaniels

Open. 1. ShCh Gainsmill Lilly Lunar at Crumbledor. Winner of the Gundog Group.

English Setter

Open.1. Mariglen Escape to Victory. 18 month old B/B. He still has at this stage some maturing to do and needs to fully fit his frame, but I think he is a very nice male. Won here on a beautiful head of ideal proportions and relatively lean through. Nice eye and well placed nicely folded ear. Good bone and good tight foot. Good length of neck into good shoulders. Well sprung and well ribbed back. Good tail set which he carries well on the move and with characteristic action. I liked this dog and would like to see him when fully mature. Was unlucky not to place in the group. 2. Moorbrook Mogul of March. Darker male of quality. Good size and so well balanced. He is fully mature and in a superb coat. Well muscled and in excellent condition. He has a very typical and impressive outline with excellent topline and tail set. For me I would personally like him a little less broad in the skull, and today he could have been a little tidier coming toward me.

Irish Setter

PostGraduate. 1. Scokira Starry Night. This was quite a smart puppy bitch. I was impressed by her lovely racy outline and angles fore and rear. This young bitch has leg and is not in anyway overdone behind. Pleasing head which is clean through and with nicely developed brow. Long neck into well laid shoulders. Nice front assembly. Good depth of chest. Correct tail set and well used on the move. Very nice overall. Just needs maturity. Well handled.

Open. Ferasheen Pop The Champers. This bitch is by a dog I really admire, and he has certainly passed on his beautiful headpiece here. Quality through. Well made front. Deep through. Correct topline and tail set. In the most super coat. BOB could have figured in the group but wasn’t as tidy going away as she was in the breed.

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever

Open 1. Camusmor Co Canny With Acanuck. Skull of correct shape. Neat almond eye and well set ear. Good shoulders and enough depth of chest. Well sprung with a level topline. Well angulated rear. Moved very well. 2. Danehaven Nouvel. Very similar to 1 in type and another who moves very well. Just preferred the slightly broader skull on the first bitch. In super condition.

German shorthaired Pointer

Open. 1 Cushatlaw Athena JW. Alone but not disgraced as she is a quality GSP. Good size for a bitch and of good overall proportions. Very nice for type. Pleasing expression with lovely eye and correct pigmented rims. Correct high set leathers. Good length of neck into good shoulder placement. Correct at the elbow. Good depth of chest. If I were to be hypercritical, she falls a fraction more than I would like at the croup. Good hind angulation. Moved very well. Was pleased to see her.

German wirehaired Pointer

Open. 1 Green Dale Ash. B/W male. An upstanding male who scored here for his overall balance. Good head of correct proportions and planes. Dark eye. Strong neck. Well laid shoulder. Good depth of chest which is not overly wide. Nice bone and correct compact foot. Correct topline for the GWP. Moderate rear. Moved soundly. Not in the best of jackets. 2. Felleywood Lightning. Very raw and immature puppy bitch. However, this 6 month puppy has promise. Lovely for type. Super overall shape. Just needs body and to learn her job. So light on her feet.

Spanish Water Dog

Open. 1. Pabiagos Sergio Sinduda JW. Winner of group 3. 2. Chanderhill Eagle Eye Sinduda. Brown. Pleasing head with good flat skull and correct overall proportions. Neat well set eye of correct oval shape. Good depth of chest. Correct height at the whithers and correct topline. For me just a little high on the leg and could be a little less close going away. Super coat. 3. Sierrosalvas Calabaza.

AV veteran. 1. Dalreavoch Northen Caper. B/B. BVIS. This is a very lovely English Setter. I thought him very smart indeed. Super outline. Typical head which is full of quality. Superb through the neck and shoulder. Super bone and still lovely feet for a veteran. Good depth or rib. Nicely angulated rear. Used his tail as he should on the move. I liked him a lot.
