Bracco Italiano, Dachshund (Miniature Long haired, Miniature Smooth haired, Miniature Wirehaired, Long haired, Smooth haired and Wirehaired) and Beagles
My first thanks, as always, must go to the committee for asking me to judge at their show. I very much felt for them because of the very unlucky events that occurred prior to the show. A deluge flooded the main area to be used for the show. However, this did not stop them where they were able to more than turn the bad situation into a positive one, putting on a well organised show. Congratulations, especially to a team so small.
Yet again, I would also like to extend my thanks to my stewards Angela and Vikki. The ring ran very well; the catalogues were very well done. They didn’t stop smiling throughout and the rapport they had with exhibitors was lovely to see.
As my main breed and judging falls within the gundog group, I am very grateful to those who came under me, not only from the gundogs but also from the hound group, especially with the heat. I was so pleased to see so many went on to do particularly well in their respective groups, seeing, 1x 3rd in Special beginners, 1x group 3, 2x group 1 and a RBIS. I can certainly say that the standard was very high. Thank you all.
The rings were of a good size enabling movement to be seen clearly. These were in a horse training arena, and I was very grateful to the flooring for this, as it managed to keep quite cool, even on a hot day and being 3rd to judge in the ring at 14:30. This enabled me to judge movement to its fullest.

Class 215: Junior Dog or Bitch (2,1)
1. 273 - Critchley’s BRACCIANO NOW OR NEVER JW – 15-month bitch that although still showing her junior status, it is clear to see that she has the sure footings for good development. Stood undocked in an orange and speckled white coat, and slightly off square in the stack. Feminine in body type and head construction yet retaining that strong and untiring characteristic. Quite pretty in head with slight curve to muzzle, showing the narrowness needed at the zygomatic arch, gentle rise to stop, soulful expression, that was framed well by pigmentation that matched coat well. This too was seen in the large, spongy nose. Correct in head proportions and median line ever visible. Ears hanging closely to cheeks and well-proportioned dewlap. Strong in moderately short neck. Well laid shoulders, that coursed into forelegs that were strong and straight. Sinews were certainly there to see, that connected into slightly sloping pasterns. Chest just reaching elbow, amply arched, strong loin and slight in tuck up. Angulation of rear mirrored that of forequarters. Good width to upper thigh and certainly well-muscled throughout, that was used on the move. Stylish on the move, showing good drive on the around. Tight in toes which was lovely to see. A promising young lady, that will mature well over time, I am sure.
Class 216: Post Graduate Dog or Bitch (2,2)
Class 217: Open Dog or Bitch (1,0)
1. 275 – Pearson’s BRACCORIONS YOU CAN CONQUER – this 2.5-year-old male that was very eye catching straight from the off. Again, orange with speckled coat, that was slightly darker than that of the other exhibit on the day. Very prominent in the stack, cutting a strong, powerful male profile. Regal in head with slight roman nose, clean finish to foreface and depth to muzzle. nice rise to stop that still showed the medial furrow. Prominence seen to occipital protuberance. Good in balance between muzzle and skull lengths. Cheeks showing leanness also. Softest expression coming from an eye in keeping with coat colour and darker fleshy pigmentation. Correct in ear placement and length. Neck strong and moderately short, with unexaggerated dewlap. Very good in front angulation, showing good length to scapulae and forearm. Forelegs straight and strong, with plenty of bone. Lovely width seen to chest that had depth at elbow. Excellent spring to ribs. Almost square in body construction that enabled a super topline, with a tight, strong loin. Breadth over croup was very good indeed. Width to upper and 2nd thigh was certainly there to see. Docked tail did not stop wagging. On the move, was very pleasing to watch. Had plenty of reach and super drive, showing clean pads and width on the up and back. Correct footfall on the around. Really liked his action and movement. BOB & Grp 1 Gundog. Very well done!
BOB & Grp1 Gundog - 275 - Pearson’s BRACCORIONS YOU CAN CONQUER (from Open)
This part of the country seems to be very blessed with the standard of all the Dachshund breeds, making for some difficult choices. Congratulations.
Dachshund (miniature Long Haired)
Class 293: Graduate Dog or Bitch (3,0)
1. 408 – Bennett & Drake’s XEMXIJA ICE ONYX – 17- month dog who stood in black and cream/fawn coat. Instantly very nice in profile. Solid in male head construction and remaining long. Gentle rise to stop, that was framed by a very pleasing expression. This came from a dark eye that was surrounded by pigmentation to match and lovely rich markings. Slight arch to muzzle. Ear placement and length correct. These hung neatly next to a neck of proportionate length, in keeping with the breed. This transitioned well into long scapulae. Good prominence to prosternum which enabled easy judging of leg placement, standing at lowest point of sternum. Showing an excellent topline. this was evident from the short, strong loin and full thoracic cavity. Good width to long croup. Rear angulation matching that of fore well. Sound in bone quantity. Well-muscled throughout, that was put to good use on the move. Moved best in class, with drive from rear. On the up and back, parallel movement was clear to see, with good width. Topline did not move! Presented very well.
2. 409 – Havill’s RAVEN BALOO – 3-year-old dog that stood in a black and rich tan coat. Again, a male with a nice head and lovely expression. Head was balanced in proportions, with slight curve to muzzle and arch to cranium. Correct in shape to eye of darkest colour. Ear placement true with breed. Gentle arch to neck. correct in front angulation and good length seen again to shoulders. Decent in prominence to chest and depth to keel. Long in body with a little rise over loin noticeable. Ribs well extended back and loin tight. Rump was certainly broad. Again, well-muscled. Personally, didn’t quite have the movement of that of first where the up and back was a touch close, however, was true on the around. Couldn’t have done more for the handler as they were in harmony with each other.
3. 410 – Stevens’s SIDBURYHILL SONGBIRDS - a very honourable mention for this youngster. Unfortunate to come up against two good and mature competitors. An exciting prospect for only 7 months. BP.
Class 294: Open Dog or Bitch (1,0)
1. 411 – Steven’s DOLYHARP AMADEUS AT SIDBURYHILL – 2-year-old male that I liked very much as soon as I saw him. Stood in a rich, full, black and dark tan coat and very pleasing in the stack. Lovely in long head construction, showing slight arch to skull. Leanness was apparent without being too narrow. Gradual rise to stop that was framed by darkest brown, medium sized, almond shaped eyes that gave a gorgeous expression. Ears of broad, moderate length were evident that were set on high, especially when alert. These sat neatly next to a long, muscular and graceful neck. This transitioned into well laid-back scapulae very well indeed. The angulation and construction of these were spot on. Balance seen in length of upper arm and shoulder length. Tightly lying arm to rib was very evident. Sternum down at elbow and prominence to breastbone very evident. Excellent in topline and well off for slight arch to strong loin. Lovely width over well placed croup. Firmness and roundness to rear-quarters again were good to see, with muscle broad and strong over upper and second thigh. Correct in tail placement and carriage. Excellent head carriage on the move. This was one of those dogs, you look at and say I hope they move as well as they look in the stack, and he did! Could not knock on the up and back and on the around. Could see this still young man doing well at Champ shows. Sadly, could not stay for the group. A great deal to like. BOB.

Dachshund (Miniature Smooth Haired)
Class 295: Graduate Dog or Bitch (4,2)
1. 413 – Ergis’s SIOUXLINE ELSA MARIE- 9-month bitch, that stood in a black and tan coat. Presented beautifully. I’m sure this little one will have a promising future. Very imposing in the stack, even more evidential for one so young. Rather beautiful in feminine head construction. Showing correct proportions to long, conical head. Soulful, dark, almond-shaped eyes that were very appealing, that were surrounded by dark pigmentation. This was also visible for the well-developed nose, necessary for the breed. Lovely shape and length to leathers. Strong in jaw. Proportionate in length of slightly arched neck, that showed good reach and cleanliness. Seamless transition into excellent shoulders. These were broad and long and set well. sitting closely to ribs yet provided the room for good movement when called upon. Soundness was evident to forelegs, with coverage of the keel. Prosternum well prominent. Excellent in length of body and spring of ribs. Well off for height providing clearance for free movement. Strength seen to loin and ribs well extended back. Hindquarters showing good muscle for age. Moved very well indeed, showing confidence beyond her years. Moved with drive on the up and back, true footfall on the around and coordinated. Level topline that did not waver on the around. Knew her job particularly well and super in confidence, showing great characteristics and temperament. Nothing fazed her. One to watch! BOB & BP.
2. 417 – Somerton’s RIJOBEAU PANDORA BOXX – an 8-month bitch, which again looked very nice in the stack and stood in a glossy black and tan coat. A pretty young girl, with very feminine head proportions. Long in head, equality seen in nose to eyes and eyes to back of cranium and tapering well to tip of nose. Although feminine, strength seen to jaw. Lovely expression from dark, almond-shaped eye, set well in head. Ears set high as per breed requirement, of good length. Elegant in length of neck, suiting the leanness and length of the body. Well off for shoulder blade angulation and proportions. Similarly, this was the case for entire front assembly. Good width to front also seen, with prominence to sternum. Correct in topline and nicely muscled loin, showing width. Well-off for muscle in rear, that was well defined for one so young. Sadly, a little timid on the table and subsequently on the move. One I really hope comes out of this phase as she is a promising little girl. Although a little distracted, still showed enough good movement to see sound drive from back end and true footfall on the around.
Class 296: Open Dog or Bitch (4,3)
1. 414 – Ergis’s BROGANSIAN BATTLECRY FOR SIOUXLINE – 8-month dog that stood in a dark brindle coat. Strength to male head, with characteristic muzzle arch, jaw and head proportions. Great shape to skull, with slight arch that fitted the hand so well. Loved the workings to zygomatic arch that accentuated the dark brown eyes and matching pigment. Balance was seen throughout. Arched neck of good length, that transitioned into forequarters very well indeed. Correct in strong, well-muscled forequarters, typical of the breed. Upper arm lay closely to well sprung ribs and deep sternum, that was particularly pleasing. Plenty of room. Although deep in sternum, still showed gradual tuck-up and ground clearance. Excellent in rear muscle width that was used so well on the move, showing width on the up and back. Really loved his reach and drive on the around. Very regal in head carriage and knew job very well. This exhibitor is going to have some fun over the next few years with two youngsters of 8-months, both show real quality. Best of luck.
2. 412 – Ashby’s – MIDLANDBULLS WILLOW AT JAXINORYDAX – 3.5-year-old bitch presented very well in red coat of lovely texture and sheen. Quite a robust girl and a little more compact than winner of this class. Very feminine in head construction, but once again a lovely, melting expression. eye colour very much in keeping with the coat, that was well received. Dark in pigmentation to nose and around eye rims that gave the impression it had been painted. Correct in ear placement and of good length. arched in muscular neck, with nice flow into well laid-back shoulders. These were long and obliquely set. Well off for front angulation. straight in forearm. Depth seen to chest, with width in front. Strong in well sprung ribs. Strong over loin and width to croup. Decent in rear angulation. Moved out with good drive and was super attentive to handler. So lovely to see. Very good in tail carriage on the move.

Dachshund (Miniature Wire haired)
Class 297: Graduate Dog or Bitch (3,1)
1. 421 – Rose’s MERRYLINE MARTHA WITH ROSENCRANTZ – 10 month- bitch that stood in a wild boar coat. A very pleasant girl in profile throughout. A mature girl for her age. Super in head and really lovely expressive mien. So dark in medium sized eye that were like pools, which were set very well. Used those eyebrows so well. arch appearance to skull. Slight stop that gracefully fell away to nose. Good balance to head proportions. Correct placement of well-rounded ear of moderate length completed the pretty picture well. Proportionate length of long, arched neck blended effortlessly into super front construction. Good angulation and proportions were clear to see. Fore chest is already well pronounced. Legs well set and fitted into chest neatly. Well off for ground clearance and height: length ratio. Has a little maturing to do in terms of thoracic spring, but I’m sure that will come soon enough. Gentle tuck up which was very pleasant. Really super topline showing light arch to strong short loin. tail set was a continuation of spine. Real positive feature was her rear angulation and muscling that she used well on the move. Certainly so, on the around where drive was very evident. Good width was also seen on the up and back. Would have liked a touch coarser coat, but think it will come with maturity. BOB & BP
2. 423 – Ruse’s FLOSSFIELDS ALL ABOUT OLIVE – 16-month bitch presented well in a dark wild boar coat. A very sweet little girl who, just like first, was feminine in appearance, compact and quite expressive. Refined in head that was proportionate to rest of body. Balance in head measurements from wide, black nose to gentle stop to occipital protuberance. Super dark in almond shaped eye. correct in ear placement and carriage. Long in well-muscled neck. Correct in front angulation. depth seen to chest. Legs well placed in strong bone for frame. Forearm did not knuckle over. Well ribbed and gentle under carriage tuck-up. Very nice in topline, showing good strength and width over loin and croup. Correct in tail placement, and carriage. Although not profusely adorned with muscle width to rear end, it was well toned. On the move, was in keeping with statue. Quite dainty, but still showing good reach and true footfall on the around. Young handler moved her charge well, showing a free and flowing style. Very good in coat.
Class 298: Open Dog or Bitch (2,1)
1. 422 – Rose’s BARRATINI SONG AND DANCE WITH ROSENCRANTZ (JW) – just short of 2-year- old bitch, shown in an appealing dark red coat. Yet again another exhibit that had lovely head proportions, head construction and expression. still dark in eye colour, but bordered with slightly lighter brow, that was ever so appealing. Especially when the rest of the head was framed by dark leathers of good length and held on high. Broad nose dark in colour as was rest of the pigmentation. Super strong neck, well-muscled and not throaty at all. Lovely front angulation. with super length to scapulae and leg placement. Good return of upper arm also. Forward facing feet set on well boned fore legs, that gave good ground clearance and able to move freely. Depth and width of the chest was very appealing, as was keel depth. Good strong rib and lovely topline. rear angulation and construction very much a positive, showing width to upper and 2nd thigh, and mirroring front. Hind legs parallel. Reach and drive were clear to see on the move, with decent stride length. Good in coat and condition.

Dachshund (Long haired)
Three nice examples in this breed. All were well off for breed type.
Class 299: Graduate Dog or Bitch (2,0)
1. 425 - Partridge’s PETTIGANS VIVA LA VIDA BY RIVEROYAL – 22-month bitch in sable coat that looked every bit the part. Presented in glorious coat condition, with body condition to match. Fine in feminine, long head, with a really beautiful expression. a slight look of arrogance that worked in her favour. Strength to jaw, soft rise to stop. Dark in medium shaped almond shaped eye. Eye liner black pigmentation around eye, that was followed into the nasal epidermis. Slight in muzzle arch. Correct in ear set, length and shape. Correct in ratios between cranium and muzzle. Lovely reach of long neck, that was presented in full coat. This seamlessly transitioned into correct layback of shoulder. These were of equal length of upper arm with the necessary 90-degree return. Elbow directly located beneath withers and at lowest point of keel. Excellent protuberance to prosternum, indicating soundness of front construction/ angulation. Good in spring to ribs and strength to loin. good in width over croup, that gently descended as part of the spin to the tail set. All providing a lovely topline. Full in rump and loved rear angulation. Won this class on movement. I asked the handlers to move the dogs several times and I couldn’t fault this girl. Very good on up and back. True in all aspects. BOB, Grp 3 hound & 3rd Special Beginners.
2. 426 – Turton’s BAY OF BISCOFF BISCUIT AT DAMORADAXIES – 2-year-old dog, with a great deal to like. Personally think he could win many a class, on his day. Although presented beautifully in full darker sable coat, than that of 1st, still very true to type and indicative of the breed. Slightly stronger in head than that of first, as to be expected of a male, he was very much appealing. Slightly more roundness to cranium than that of 1st, he retained type well, especially in terms of head balance and arch to muzzle. Lovely soulful expression that emanated from darkest of eyes. ears of correct length that hung next to a neck showing good reach and characteristic arch. Sound in front proportions with scapulae of good length. Prominence to sternum. Well off for bone throughout. Good length seen to ribcage and loin, with the latter being strong and stable. Again, presenting a sound topline, which did not waver on the move. Well off for muscle to rear. Just pipped by 1st on movement. On the day he was a touch close on the up and back, for my liking. However, on the around the footfall was sound. Beautiful in coat presentation and fullness. Did everything the handler asked of him. Also, characteristics very in keeping of the breed, which again was lovely to see. Pushed 1st well.
Class 300: Open Dog or Bitch (1,0)
1. 427 – Turton’s BREEZELYN LONG TIME NO SEE AT DAMORADAXIES – 2-year-old dog, that stood in very dark red sable. Coat was absolutely super in texture, length and presentation. Very slight in arch to muzzle, coming from a large black nose. Similar colour to pigmentation was seen bordering medium, very dark eye. This gave rise to a lovely expression, yet again. Gentle in rise to stop, from refined cheeks. Correct in ear placement and carriage. Strong in neck that carried plenty of coat, without being overdone. Super in front angulation and proportions, that was carried from the prominent pro-sternum, through to deepest of keel and well sprung ribs. Well off for muscle to rear quarters. Good width over croup and length, also. Very joyful on the move, and free flowed around the ring. Coat with a little movement that gave a lovely look to this young male.

Class 301: Graduate Dog or Bitch (5,2)
1. 429 – Ashby's RAYOL PUMPKIN PIE AT JAXINORYDAX – bitch of some 22 months, that stood proudly in a short, dense, dark red coat. Prominent in the stack that instantly caught the eye. Very feminine in refined head construction. Long and giving that necessary conical appearance from above. Lovely leanness to skull that emphasised her features well. Again, black in nasal pigmentation that followed through the rest of the exhibit. This lent itself well when looking into her well positioned, dark eye. Super in stop ascension, that was very gentle indeed. Arch to clean, long neck. Strong in shoulder, that was very well angulated meeting that 90-degree requirement. Ratio of shoulder blade to upper arm equal. Strong and short in term of foreleg. All held closely to rib. Excellent in strongly made sternum. Ribs well sprung and let down, without being too deep. Gentle rise to undercarriage and supper strong over short loin. topline once again was excellent to see, very much in keeping with breed. So well held on the move, showing excellent condition. Powerful in rear construction, that was in keeping and balanced with the front. real roundness to the rump. Excellent on the move with little to criticise. Good width to rear quarters on the up and back. Really lovely exhibit. BOB.
2. 428 – Ashby’s RAAJPUT’S CANADIAN WINTER WITH WAKYWILKS – 3-year-old dog shown in black and tan. Lovely in type. Refined in male head. little in the way of arch to muzzle, but still present. Good strength to jaw. Showing slight rise to stop and super dark eye. nice rise to brows accentuated by markings, that was nice to see. Well off for skull proportions. Correct length to leathers and their placement. Strong in neck that flowed very well into equally strong body. Shoulders well laid back. Very well sprung rib. Short in loin and still strong. Excellent width and length to croup, providing a good bedrock for powerful hindquarters. This exhibited what you want to see from a dog of this breed, at this stage of development. Well off for rear angulation, and certainly roundness to rump. Personally, a little close behind on the up and back, but showed decent movement on the around. Looked quite a picture in the stack. Coming up just short in for 1st place, but still a good example.
3. 434 – Turton’s JAXINORYDAX BEAUTIFUL LIES FROM DAMORADAXIES.
Class 302: Open Dog or Bitch (4,3)
1. 430 – Ashby's RAYOL DALLAS COWBOYS AT JAXINORYDAX – 22-month dog. Litter mate to 1st in graduate, that expressed a great deal of the same positive traits, making the challenge quite difficult. Dark red coat, this boy stood quite proud and with confidence. Head construction was masculine without being overdone. Black in proportionately large nose. Good rise to stop, providing the start to a moderately arched cranium. Workings to zygomatic arch that allowed for a nice expression. Dark eye in keeping with coat was clear to see. Ear placement, shape and length correct, which folded neatly next to a long, muscular and slightly arched neck. Just as his sister, lovely front construction, with angulation to match. Well boned throughout. Well sprung rib. Tight loin. Well-muscled rear, giving roundness to rump. Good width to croup, which enabled him to drive out very well, and show positive movement in all aspects. In lovely condition.

Class 305: Post Graduate Dog or Bitch (2,0)
1. 440 – Scarlett’s VANITONIA ENCHANTED OVER MICHELROY JW – 20-month, a lighter tri coloured bitch, which was instantly eye catching on entering the ring. Certainly filled the breed appearance of compact and sturdy, with plenty of type. Loved her beautifully shaped feminine head that had a slight dome, well defined stop and equality seen between muzzle length and cranium. Excellent width to large, black nose and clean finish to foreface and flews. Dark eyes and pigmentation that gave a really lovely feminine expression. Correct in ear placement, shape and length, that hung effortlessly close to cheeks and framed the head so nicely. Nice to see a correct mouth. Strong in slightly arched neck that was virtuous for the size of the dog. This flowed effortlessly into well laid-back shoulders and great forequarters in terms of construction and angulation. Correct in elbow and withers height proportions. Well boned throughout. Excellent width to front that she used very well on the move. Good depth to chest that was down at elbow. Balanced in spring of ribs, with excellent strength to short-coupled loin. Super in topline. lovely tail carriage. Rear quarters were definitely another strong point with lovely width to upper and second thigh. These were well muscled also. Angulation again in keeping with that of the front, that was used to her fullest on the move. Lovely action on the move as soon as she took off. On the up and back showed width and plenty of drive and reach. On the around had spot-on footfall. Lovely head carriage and handled to perfection for her movement. A balanced dog throughout. BOB, Grp 1 hound and RBIS. What can I say, but well done!
2. 442 – Wigstead’s LILLEAGLE JEREMY FISHER WITH BELLENZA – 22-month dog that stood in a coat of broken tricolour. Strong in masculine head. A very soulful expression, that comes from eyes that are set well apart, fairly large, hazel and bordered by black pigmentation. Good length to proportions of head. Neck in balance with thoracic region construction. Forelegs straight and well off for rounded bone. Strong over loin. Angulation of rear quarters good, with well let down hocks. Tail carriage on the move was lovely to see. Good amount of drive on the up and back.
Class 306: Open Dog or Bitch (3,0)
My first and 2nd were litter mates and of some 8-years young. Neither showed their age at all. Both were in great condition for age and much of a muchness. Splitting hairs was needed to separate these two lovely matriarchs. This class gave a difficult decision.
1. 439 – Roberts & Spearing’s LINKENLEES LYRIC SHCM, SHCEx VW – 8-year-old bitch stood in a rich tri-coloured coat. Very pleasing in the stack. Very sturdy in appearance. Loved her head, with dome shape to cranium that fitted in the hand beautifully and prominence to stop. Expression was very nice indeed showing alertness, but still feminine and pretty. Lovely dark eye set well apart, with dark mascara-like black trim. Well flewed. Good reach to neck which transitioned into well laid shoulders. Good width to well angulated front. Down at elbow, and well sprung ribs. Loved her hindquarters that gave her the edge over her litter sister. Lovely roundness to muscular upper and second thigh. Well let down hocks. Moved best in the class with good reach on the around and with true footfall. Just pipping her sisters from her rear, and slight better drive.
2. 438 – Roberts & Spearing’s LINKENLEES LAURINA SHCEx VW– 8-year-old bitch. The critique for this girl will be very similar to that of 1st as there were so many positive similarities between the two. Certainly in the head department the resemblance was striking. Stood in a slightly darker coat and a touch more compact than that of first. Maybe a touch finer in head construction, yet still very much appealing. Stop well defined and very well off for skull proportions. Darkest in eye and pigmentation. Similarly, the case in wide nostrils. Clean finish to foreface. Ear set on low. Good reach to neck with good balance noted between front and rear angulation. Forelegs straight and upright. Pasterns short. Chest down at elbow, with moderate tuck up. Although not quite the amount of muscle as her sister in the back end, she still had more than appealing amount of muscularity to thigh. Stifles well let down. Tight in feet. Tail carried well. On the move, didn’t quite have the verve as her sister, but still had true footfall on the around and was certainly going well for 8.
