First of all, I would like to thank the committee for asking me to judge at their show. Although low in committee members, they certainly hit above their weight for hospitality.

Despite there being 3 shows, 2 of which were prestigious open Gundog shows, falling over 3 consecutive days and in close vicinity which limited attendee numbers, I had some lovely attendees and I was generally most happy with the standard of dogs that came under me. I am very grateful for all of those who made the effort to come out and attend the show.

I would also like to extend my thanks to those, who stewarded for me on the day, with Chris leading the line so well yet again. The ring ran very well, and the catalogues were pristine. Therefore, many thanks to my stewards.

The rings were of a decent size enabling my main pre-requisite for judging, movement, to be scrutinised well. I did not waver from this requirement in this show. Most of the dogs on the day did move well, however, some were a little close. I felt the dogs throughout my judging conformed to their breed standard well, with several showing “type” that I am more accustomed to, than with others.

ITALIAN SPINONE

LARGE MUNSTERLANDER

Class 306: Post Graduate (1,1)

Class 307: Open (3,2)

1. 340 - Stevens’s GHYLLBECK FRINGELLA – 7.5-year-old bitch, but did not show her age. Pleasing in the stack, showing the positive attributes for the breed, painting a pretty, female picture. Solid black in feminine head, with dark eye, very much in keeping with rest of head. Wide black nostrils, with characteristic slight rise from the nasal bone. Ears held closely to side of head. Strong in muscular neck with slight arch, and with seamless flow into shoulders. These were well laid back, which were evident when on the move. Straight forelegs and strong pasterns. Depth seen to chest, showing down at elbow, and spring to rib. Well-muscled over loin, and short coupled. Good angulation to croup. Width to upper thigh. Excellent in muscle tone and quantity to rear end, which was used on the move. Good width seen behind on the up and back. True in footfall on the around. BOB.

GERMAN SHORTHAIRED POINTER

Class 308: Post Graduate (1,0)

1. 341 – Serpa’s WINTERWELL STARRY NIGHT AT MYLANUKA (AI) – 7-month bitch with a lot of potential. Complete liver in colour. Quite pretty in profile in the stack showing good balance. Certainly, full of youthful exuberance, that will need a little taming in time, yet still biddable and affectionate with the handler. Feminine in head construction which was very clean. Alert, intelligent expression from lighter shade of brown eye, which was in keeping with the skin and coat pigmentation. Skull well-proportioned to body showing breadth. Good prominence to brows. Nice amount of working under eye. Well-developed nostrils that blended perfectly with coat. Ears set on high, framing that expression well, and of soft texture. Well off for length, coming close to mouth corner. Moderate length of neck with slight arch, very much in keeping with proportions to body. Front and rear angulation very much in balance. Gentle slope to pasterns. Bone favourable throughout and in keeping with size of bitch, at her stage of development. Depth seen to chest and down to elbow. Excellent in topline with back short and firm. Well ribbed and strength to loin for one so young. Good tail placement and carriage. Width to upper thigh. Coat in lovely condition. Movement was a little tricky for this one, but from what I saw, she was true, with width behind on the up and back. Contemplated for BOB but needs a little more maturing and schooling in the ability to not run on two legs, to beat the overall winner in the breed. A lovely character and I am sure one with which the owner will have some fun. Shame not to have done better in the puppy group. RBOB and BP.

Class 309: Open (1,0)

1. 342 – Serpa & Graham’s WINTERWELL TUBBY TOMPKIN FROM NYLIRAM JW – 3-year-old male that stood in a predominantly liver coat with white ticks. Quite imposing in the stack showing type and good muscling. Again, a well-balanced dog from the same breeder/owner as winner in post graduate. Is already showing maturity for his age. Clean in head, whilst retaining masculinity and very much in proportion to rest of body, showing lovely lines/outline. Jaws of good length and skull showing typical characteristic of breadth and slight roundedness. Soulful, dark eye of medium size. Correct in ear set and shape. Good reach to arched neck that flowed elegantly into well laid shoulders. Ample bone seen throughout. Straight in forelegs, which are certainly lean. Depth seen to chest, with good width also. Tuck up pleasing and good strength to loin yet again. All made for a lovely topline and outline. Balance again seen in width of upper thigh, second thigh and rest of body. Well angled in rear construction. Correct in tail placement and carried horizontally on the move. True in foot fall on the around, and good width to front on the return. Used those rear muscles well to give plenty of drive. BOB.

HUNGARIAN WIREDHAIRED VISZLA

HUNGARIAN VIZSLA

RETRIEVER (NOVA SCOTIA DUCK TOLLING)

Seems as though the standard of NSDT was strong at this show. Thank you to those who came under me and gave me a headache, in nearly every class.

Class 315: Special Yearling (3,0)

1. 344 – Boyd’s SKYSARIA ETERNAL FLAME JW – a male of some 19-months, who is showing maturity beyond his age in terms of size and some areas of coat. In profile, correct in head construction showing slight wedge shape and moderate stop. Excellent colouration to the pigmentation of the nasal and ocular regions, very much in keeping with coat. Ample workings below eye that sat on flat cheeks. Loved the expression coming from medium, almond shaped eyes of darker amber. Framed by ears that were alert and set high and well back. Moderate reach of neck that rolled effortlessly into well laid-back shoulders. All putting together a well-constructed front assembly. Depth of chest down to elbow and good spring of ribs at such a young age. Level in topline and moderate tuck up. Had the better rear-end width and angulation in the class showing width to upper thigh and turn at stifle. Best mover in the class, leading to him being the winner of the class. Very sound in all respects, which also meant RBOB.

2. 351 – Parker, Parker & Hipkiss’s SKYSARIA BLAZE OF HOPE WITH DELTANDAMBA JW – very happy to find out this was litter mate to 1st, showing very similar attributes. A touch whiter than first, with flash to head furrow down to nose, on chest, feet (not above pasterns) and desired tail tip. Head construction showing wedge shaped head, broad skull, and strength to muzzle. Nose of flesh colour with eye pigment to match. Personally, preferred the expression of this exhibit to that of first. Lovely dark eye, of medium almond shape, with lovely alert expression, which also came from the ear positioning and carriage. Length of neck proportionate to rest of body and of good strength. Just the same as his brother, the neck flowed well into well laid shoulders. Straight in front and brisket down at elbow. Strength over loin, with moderate tuck-up. Gentle slope to croup. Good width to upper and second thigh, but brother had matured here a little quicker. On the move, didn’t quite have the width behind of 1st, but think this could develop with age as a lot of the qualities of the dog point to this. Was true in front on the return and good footfall on the around. Tail carriage was super. Presented very well in lovely coat.

3. 345 – Hughes’s ABACOT HEART OF THE OCEAN- a very honourable mention for this 9-month youngster, who showed a lot of breed type. Lacked the maturity overall of that of the others in the class, but a very promising prospect. Although only puppy present, a very deserved BP and PGR4.

Class 316: Post Graduate (1,0)

1. 346 – Hughes’s ABACOT INTO THE UNKNOWN JW – although this 4-year-old male stood alone in the class, he was very much worthy of his positioning. A lot to like about this more compact exhibit who showed a great deal of type. Clean in head construction, showing breadth and slightly rounded. Roundness to back of skull. Good rise to stop. Good workings to zygomatic arch and around eyes of almond shape and amber in colour. Pigmentation blended well with coat and matched the eye colour very well. Strength to jaw apparent. Alert in ear carriage that framed the face well indeed. Moderate reach of neck that was well enshrouded in coat. Front construction and angulation very pleasant. Brisket down at elbow. Elbows close to body yet giving enough width to chest for decent frontal movement. Good strength to loin. Width present to upper and second thigh. Good in rear angulation. On the move drove out very well indeed, and super happy to do so, but lost a little in refinement on the move. Strongly considered for RBOB, only just missing out. Presented in quite full, beautiful, darker coat. Super attentive to handler.

Class 317: Open (5,0)

A very lovely class.

1. 354 – Ward’s MELANITTA PALMATA JW – this nearly 7-year-old male was very eye catching instantly on entering the ring. Presented absolutely immaculately. Definitely a male in appearance, without being too strong or overdone. Very attractive in head, that showed lovely construction and proportions. Balance was a good word for this exhibit. That certainly was the case regarding the ratios of head: body. Dark in almond shape eye that was bordered by lighter pigmented membrane. This was a similar shade to the nose. Broad in slightly rounded skull and showing desired slight wedge shape. Flat in cheek and showing some lovely working to zygomatic arch. Correct in ear placement and shape. Strong in neck of medium length that was profusely feathered. This flowed so neatly into muscular shoulders of correct angulation and construction. Strong in straight forelegs, with those slightly sloping pasterns. Depth of chest down to elbow with excellent spring to ribs. Super level topline, that did not waver on the move. Strength seen to loin. Good amount of width to gently sloping croup, with correct tail set. Correct in rear angulation, and width to upper and second thigh. All were in proportion with each other. Well boned throughout. Moved the best of all the NSDTR on the day, showing the soundness of the front and rear construction, as well as the angulation. Very confident in the stack and on the move, with correct tail carriage and action. Held the ring as his own. Really drove out well, with width behind and true on the up and back. Correct foot fall on the around. BOB.

2. 350 – Parker’s TOLLPEPPER ECHO’S HOPE FOR SKYSARIA – 4.5-year-old bitch that again had a lot to like. Presented beautifully, with a double coat that was very soft indeed. Lighter in colour than that of first, but still very much appealing. Lovely feminine appearance, with gorgeous expression that was used well. Eyes amber in colour that had darker rims, that blended into the coat effortlessly. Very alert and looked ready to work. Clean in feminine, wedge-shaped skull. Stop, apparent. Muscular in medium length neck, which allowed for an easy run into the well laid shoulders. Scapular of moderate length. Good width to the forechest allowing space for her to move well. Again, brisket down to elbow, with good spring to ribs and nice, moderate tuck-up. Loved the strength to loin, without being over the top. Very gentle angulation to croup that had proportional width to rest of the exhibit. Moderate angulation that was needed for this girl. Once you had your hands through her coat, it was obvious she had good width to upper and second thigh. Well bent at stifle. Not a small girl, yet still retained compactness and quality. On the move the tail did not stop in that typical NSDTR action. Didn’t quite move as well as first today, being a little close on the up and back. However, she had true footfall on the around. Another that was really attentive to handler, confident and eager to please.

3. 348 – Palfrey’s EUSANIT WILD ATLANTIC WAY.

BOB - 354– Ward’s MELANITTA PLAMATA JW (from Open)

RBOB - 344 – Boyd’s SKYSARIA ETERNAL FLAME JW (from special Yearling)

WEIMARANER

Class 318: Post Graduate (1,0)

1. 355 Tamblyn & Dorkins’s WEIPOWA SKYFALL – a 2-year-old male who had a lot of attributes that are upstanding in the breed. Made a very strong, masculine appearance in the stack. Presented in a slightly darker grey, rich coat. Regal in head carriage, that showed equal length in foreface and cranial measurements. Prominence to occipital protuberance. Moderately sized eyes of lighter amber, giving a keen, alert expression. Lovely amount of working to zygomatic arch. Correct ear placement and finish. Clean in moderate neck. Very strong in body, with good lay back of shoulders, correct in foreleg proportions and depth to chest. Good width to chest also. Well sprung ribs. 12:10 body ratio quite apparent and super strong over loin. Very pleasing muscle tone to rear and construction in keeping with that of front. Lovely feet. On the move the topline did not waver. Good width seen behind and to front on the up and back. Moved with great confidence and commanded the ring. Shame they couldn’t stay for the group. BOB

Class 320: Post Graduate (1,1)

Class 321: Open (2,1)

1. 358 Tregaskis’s MOENFAIR SANGUINEUM LUNA JW – a 6-year-old strongly built male, stood in liver and white. Very imposing in outline and had plenty of ring presence. Head showing well defined stop, correct proportions to length of foreface: skull. Showing correct planes and enough occipital protuberance. Really lovely expression, coming from a brown eye that was very much in keeping with coat and workings under eye. Ears set well lying close to skull. Slight arch to muscular and long neck. Seamless transition into strong, well angulated front assembly. Chest down at elbow, well sprung ribs that reached to a short coupled, well-muscled loin. Well established tuck-up and lovely topline. Good width, length, and angulation to croup, providing a nicely positioned tail set. Rear angulation mirrored that of first well. Well off for muscle tone throughout. One of the best movers on the day. Covered the ground with ease. Retained width on the up and back. Topline did not waver on the around. Lovely presentation in a super-rich coat. BOB
