Breed: Open show

Thank you to Trudi and her team for inviting me to judge at their 100th Anniversary Open Show. I had several outstanding dogs in my Working group. The Leonberger was wonderful and really deserved to go Best in Show. I enjoyed judging the Stakes classes with so many different breeds. I had quite a relay of different stewards throughout the day and nearly missed having any lunch. But it was a very enjoyable day and I loved my top winners.

NEWFOUNDLAND

OPEN (1)

1. Carter’s Zentaur The Fizz Factor ShCEx. A nice looking 3-year-old mature black dog, having all the characteristics of the breed. Well balanced, showing strength and substance. Correct head, broad and relatively large, slightly arched crown. Nice square muzzle and correct dark eyes. Good ear set and scissor bite. Muscular neck. Well laid shoulders. Straight, well boned and muscled fore legs. Level, firm topline. Back broad, strong and muscular. Well-developed powerful hindquarters. Nicely bent stifles and straight hocks. Good double coat. Characteristic movement with accepted slight toeing in front, but not much enthusiasm. Large, well-rounded feet. BEST OF BREED.

ROTTWEILER

POST GRADUATE (3)

1. Hopwood’s Saintlythans Cleopatra. I really fell for this 11-month-old puppy bitch, who, I think should have a very promising future. Super outline, showing correct proportions, balance and stamina. Super head. Broad skull and moderately arched forehead. Correct cheeks. Muzzle fairly deep with level topline with well-defined stop. Dark almond eyes and well-set ears. Good dentition. Strong neck. Adequate lay of shoulders. Straight, muscular fore legs. Super fore chest with depth of chest coming. Straight, strong back of correct length. Hindquarters developing with fairly bent stifles. Strong, round compact feet with well arched toes. Black pencil marks on toes. Moved very well with purpose. BEST PUPPY & BEST OF BREED.

2. Lefebvre-King’s Buttonlove Shes Ice Ice Baby. A young bitch, well-proportioned, with a very nice outline. Presented in super condition with a lovely shiny coat. Feminine head, with dark eyes. Unfortunately, she has a habit of not standing correctly, which is a shame. Straight, firm back, well ribbed. Nice hindquarters with well bent stifles. Moved well. RESERVE BEST OF BREED.

3. Bennett’s Saintlythans Atlas.

OPEN (3)

1. Hopwood’s Saintlythans Cleopatra. As above.

2. Levebvre-King’s Buttonlove Alfies the Great. A 5-year-old dog who does not show himself off to advantage, making it up in his lovely temperament. A pleasing type with a reasonable outline. Nice head with not such a defined stop. Well bodied in lovely condition and muscle tone. Nicely marked. Good strong, round, compact feet with well arched toes.

BERNESE MOUNTAIN DOG

OPEN (2)

1. Bradborn’s Vinnona Vom Hause Mihaljevic by Lealhund. A very immature 6-month-old puppy bitch. First show for dog and handler. She had a lovely good-natured temperament. Her head had a flat skull and well-defined stop. Good dentition. Her outline was spoilt by her hunch back and ring tail. Nice short, round, compact feet. Presented in good coat. BEST PUPPY & BEST OF BREED.

Good neck and forequarters. Firm, straight back, but rump a little high. Muscled hindquarters with moderate bend of stifle. Not very tight feet, but he had well arched toes. I felt he could have moved faster. Presented in super double coat. RESERVE BEST OF BREED.

2. Bartlett’s Dacfolke Shami Shamrock. A nice bitch, with a feminine head. Correct eyes and well-set ears. Good front and fore chest but appeared a bit down in pasterns on the day. Firm, straight back. Correct hindquarters. Moved very well. Presented in good condition, well-muscled and just enough coat.

OPEN (3)

1. Reader’s Ch Lempileijonan Unelmien Prinssi (Imp Fin) JW. Wow. My find of the day! A wonderful champion dog in his prime. Easily won BOB, the Working group and went on to be BIS. Just wonderful. A very worthy champion. Everything was right with this dog, showing off his muscular elegance. So confident and calm, powerful and strong. Professionally presented in wonderful condition, muscled, double-coat and handled. BEST OF BREED.

2. Sabine’s Dacfolke Luck of the Irish. Very hard to follow the above, being quite a bit younger. Good temperament. Attractive, well-proportioned head with the characteristic ‘roman nose.’ Dark oval-shaped eyes, ears set on high and correct dentition. Good tail, well furnished, straight, reaching to the hocks. Moved OK.

SPECIAL VETERAN (7-9 YEARS) (3)

1. Groves, Lafford & Lafford’s Dobermann, Lateagain Satisfaction JW ShCEx VW. A lovely looking 8-year-old dog, elegant and muscular. He has such a wonderful outline and proud carriage. Lovely head of good shape and proportions, with dark eyes. Fairly long neck and well laid shoulders, Straight, parallel round boned front legs and neat well arched feet. Square body, with back short, firm and strong. Straight topline sloping slightly and well-set tail. Belly tucked up. Hindquarters well-developed and muscular. Straight hocks. Super movement with reach and drive, covering the ground with ease. Well-marked. BEST WORKING VETERAN.

2. Cox’s Bullmastiff, Ardhus Ar Ais Sa Dubh at Rainwilds. It was lovely to see a Veteran Bullmastiff, as they are not a very long-lived breed. This old chap was looking his age, still fit for show and obviously well loved and looked after. He was a very attractive colour.

SPECIAL VETERAN (10+ YEARS) (1)

1. Crowther’s Siberian Husky, Skimarque Snowfall Lacie VW. A lovely looking 12-year-old bitch, who looks wonderful for her age. In such wonderful condition, both structurally, coat and condition. She has really been looked after so well to get to this stage. She has a well-proportioned feminine, foxy head. Attractive ‘wall’ eyes which are acceptable in this breed. Well set ears, relatively close together. Very good teeth, aiding her to keep going so well. She is in super condition for her age with really good muscle tone and moved very well on her nice oval feet.

ANY VARIETY EASTER EGG OPEN STAKES (26)

1. Carter’s Ibizan Hound, L-Wynd Where the Shadow Ends (Imp USA). 9 months old and what a stunner! So ‘eye catching’, elegant and beautiful. Lovely head. Fine, long, flat skull with prominent occipital bone. So beautifully balanced. Clear amber eyes. Ending with a flesh-coloured nose. Very lean, long, muscular neck, slightly arched. Long, straight legs. Long, flat ribcage. Long, strong, straight and lean hindquarters, with moderate angulation. Everything flowed so well. Arched toes. Just glided around the ring with evidence of suspended trot. A wonderful sight.

2. Hampton’s Wire Fox Terrier, Travella Steel a Kiss. I judged this young bitch nearly a year ago, qualifying her for the Crufts YKC Members Stakes, where she came fourth. She still needs to mature a little more, but she is so stylish and smart that she cannot be ignored. A very good example of the breed, which is no surprise when looking at the prefix. Everything is so well balanced. Equal proportioned head, super neck, with body fitting into a square box shape. A long, lean, narrow head with a flattish top skull. Small V shaped ears nicely placed. Moderately narrow front, straight forelegs and flat clean shoulders. Short, level back. Strong muscled hindquarters, well bent stifles with hocks well let down. Good tail set.
