Folkestone Hythe & District Canine Society

Breed: Open show

Thank you to the officers and committee for inviting me to judge at this show. Initially, it was to judge the Staffordshire Bull Terriers and Terrier Group. I love judging the Staffords and consider myself a knowledgeable Terrier judge, having been passed by the RKC to judge the group at Championship level. I was also given the opportunity to judge Pointers, a new task for me. Thank you to the exhibitors for the quantity and quality of the Pointers entered. I am sorry if I was a little slow and hesitant judging them, but I wanted to make sure I got it as right as I could. I did enjoy it. Thank you to my efficient stewards.

POINTER

JUNIOR (2)

1. Kennedy’s Droveborough’s Hells Bells. Difficult to choose between these two. I placed this one first based on movement, in particular her front movement. Her general outline had a very nice flowing, graceful curve. Well balanced feminine head, with well-defined stop. Good neck. Well laid shoulders, super front, good ribs, wide hindquarters, presenting a balanced curvy shape. I would like her chest to deepen and drop, also she stands a bit close in front, but she is only 13 months old with plenty of time to mature. Correct topline. Muscles developing in hindquarters and well-turned stifles. Moved smoothly, covering the ground.

2. Perren’s Evaluna for Your Eyes Only at Mistin. Another well made, nice balanced bitch of similar age but does not show herself off to best advantage. A very nice well-proportioned head. Pronounced occipital bone and well-defined stop, with dish face appearance. Plenty of depth, strong hindquarters with good bend of stifle. Moved OK.

POST GRADUATE (4)

1. Welch’s Hookwood Starman JW. A mature, strong, well-built dog, with a good overall outline. Nice classical masculine head with pronounced occipital bone and not such a deep stop. Good neck and shoulders. Super fore chest and deep chest down to his elbows. Correct topline, well ribbed back. Nicely bodied, good bone, well-muscled and in super condition. Strong hindquarters, well-turned stifles and straight hocks. Moved smoothly, covering plenty of ground effortlessly.

2. Barham’s Alozia Zephryne. Quite an immature bitch, who needs to develop more. Presents a nicely balanced outline, but colour tends to detract the topline. A sweet head, giving a pleasing expression. Slightly arched neck and well-laid shoulders. A bit narrow in front, due to immaturity. Firm topline, well ribbed back. Moved well.

3. Robert’s Kananaskis Hudson.

4. Sharpe’s Joneva Dazzle and Daze.

OPEN (6)

Not an easy class to judge. The third & fourth placed had excellent movement, but I thought the first two had better ‘Pointer’ outlines.

1. Barham’s Droveborough’s Mocha Mayhem. This bitch had the correct ‘aristocratic’ appearance and best outline of graceful curves. Lovely well-proportioned head with deep stop. Strong arched neck, plenty of fore chest and good lay of shoulders. Straight front, good depth of chest and slight arch to loin. Super topline with everything flowing. Well-muscled hindquarters. Good turn of stifles and hocks well let down. Nicely set tail that wagged correctly. Smooth movement using her tail. Well knitted feet with arched toes. BEST OF BREED.

2. Welch, Maber & Hazeltine’s Sharnphilly Toggi with Hookwood JW. A mature bitch with similar attributes to the one above. She also had a super outline with everything flowing so well. A nice pretty head with kind expression and pronounced occipital bone. Good length of neck, deep chest, ribs well sprung and arched loin. Fell away a little over croup resulting in a lower set tail. Moved well. Shown in good condition. RESERVE BEST OF BREED.

3. Welch’s Clamerkin Jubilee Surprise at Hookwood JW.

4. Perren’s Evaluna Chasing Rainbows with Hookwood JW.

5. Sharpe’s Joneva Dazzle and Daze.

STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIER

All bitches.

POST GRADUATE (6)

1. Moldovan’s Ayledastaff Forgive Me Not. An attractive brindle bitch with white blaze to chest. Well boned and balanced, muscular and fit. She had a larger typical head, distinct stop, with well set ears, round eyes, correctly placed and pronounced cheeks. Muscular neck, correct length compared to loin. Good width to her front with well boned legs and slight turn out of the foot at the pastern. Good shoulder construction, level topline, well sprung ribs, defined waistline and noticeable tuck up. Muscled hindquarters with well bent stifles. Medium length low set tail, held well on the move. Almost catlike feet strong at the pasterns. Presented in hard condition with a lovely shiny coat tight to the skin. BEST OF BREED.

2. Turner’s Matrixstaff Moon Dancer at Tidestaff. Another nice black brindle bitch, sired by a dog I always admire. She has clean lines to her profiles. Typical well shaped head with correct well-set ears. Super round eyes looking ahead. Correct scissor bite. Well boned wider straight front. Level topline, enough ribbing and not such a pronounced waist. Well-muscled hind quarters. Moved well, holding a level topline throughout.

3. Rowland’s Bilrosestaff Shes the One.

OPEN (2)

1. Turner’s On the Hill Two at Tidestaff. Almost 7 years old, this brindle bitch is presented in superb condition with a shiny coat and tight skin to the body. A very nice type, muscular and well-balanced. Good clean head with a distinct stop, not such a round eye as her kennel mate, but neat ears that frame her face beautifully, contributing to a soft and pleasing expression. Correct scissor bite with clean, tight lips. Her legs are straight and well-boned, with sufficient depth of chest and good rib development. Moved OK and handled well. RESERVE BEST OF BREED.

JUNIOR (4)

1. Edington-Hall & Ballinger’s Airedale, Est Etiam Novus Angelus Mit Wendaire (IMP UKR). I have judged this chap when he was a puppy and he is developing nicely. Correct square muscular outline. Head of good shape and length, with correct ears, well set. Clean, muscular, strong neck. Well laid shoulders and straight forelegs. Short level back, conditioned and well-muscled, well ribbed. Long, muscular thighs, with stifles well bent. Good tail set. Moved very well when settled.

2. Salmon’s Sealyham Terrier, Obi Wan Kenobi of Kindergarten at Seamolt (IMP HUN). My find of the day! But such a naughty boy, determined to sort out the Airedale! A 10-month-old top quality Sealyham puppy with attractive badger markings. Super length of head with skull slightly domed and wide between the ears. Dark round eyes and super ears slightly rounded and carried close to his cheeks. Low set and with excellent topline and good ribbing. Very good hindquarters and front action. Good tail set carried a little too much over his back but should improve when he settles and grows up. Wonderful movement, brisk and vigorous with plenty of drive. Presented in excellent coat for a puppy. He put in a very confident performance full of terrier spirit! ANY VARIETY NOT SEPARATELY CLASSIFIED TERRIER BEST PUPPY.

3. Burrage’s Cesky Terrier, Lojza Garex (IMP CZE).

Plenty of substance but free from clumsiness. Super long well-proportioned head with flat skull. Small dark eyes and super small ears set well on his head dropping forward. Correct length of neck with a slight fringe each end of his neck. Well- laid shoulders and straight fore legs, well boned and muscled. Super body with strong top line and slight arch to loin. Strong, muscled hindquarters with moderate bend of stifle. Well set tail and carriage. Good harsh wiry coat texture and colour. Moved very well. Excellently prepared and handled.
