Lichfield Canine Society

Thank you to Tony Hadley, plus the officers and Committee of this society for inviting me to judge at this very prestigious premier open show. It was such a shame the weather forecast was so bad, resulting in so many judges and exhibitors not attending. There was a tiny bit of snow and as usual, the Stafford showground building was not very warm, otherwise it was fine. The officials and committee did a wonderful job sorting out all the problems that faced them. There were enough Terriers present for me to judge and I was very happy with my top placings. My Best Veteran Terrier was awarded Best Veteran in Show, which is always nice. Thank you to Spencer Cox, my very pleasant breed steward, who always had a smile and Tony for stewarding the Terrier group for me.

BULL TERRIER

JUNIOR (4)

1. Mills’ Rightstuff Black Knight. A nice example of the breed. Strongly built and well-muscled, presented in hard, fit condition, giving a very nice outline. Masculine head with good bite. Correct length of head with profile curving gently downwards from top of skull to tip of nose. Nice obliquely set triangular eyes. Strong shoulders. Straight front legs with round strong bone. Chest broad. Body well rounded with short back. Nice correct flow of topline, but for perfection I would have liked the tail set to have flowed with it. Moved very well, smoothly covering the ground with ease. Handler and dog very well presented. A shame they did not stay for the Terrier group. BEST OF BREED.

POST GRADUATE (2)

1. Bownes’ Starcinco a Million Dreams at Bownesbulls. This dog did not have the style and showmanship of the above. Not the quality head either, although he had the correct eyes and ears. Bull Terriers should have a strongly built muscular body, not as thickly set as this one. He had good muscular hindquarters, but movement was not at its best on the day. RESERVE BEST OF BREED.

OPEN (2)

1. Mills’ Rightstuff Black Knight. AS ABOVE.

BULL TERRIER (MINIATURE)

Bearing in mind all the absentees, both judges and exhibitors, it was nice to see full attendance.

POST GRADUATE (1)

1. Pilinska’s Shine from Space Bulls Aria (IMP POL). A strongly built, well-muscled red bitch with white on her front. Nicely bodied and boned. Good depth and broadness of chest. Muscled hindquarters and well bent stifle joints. Producing a pleasing profile. Compact round feet with arched toes.

OPEN (4)

1. Bownes’ Jenkir Hebe at Bownesbulls. A very nice bitch, who was a natural showman, making life easy for her handler. She was very well balanced with an intelligent expression. A very nice head, egg-shaped from the front and correct profile curve from skull to nose. I just would have preferred better obliquely placed triangular eyes, which cost her a place in the Terrier group. I consider it an important breed point. Otherwise, I thought she was lovely with a very fit, firm, well rounded body. Correct flow of topline, underline and waistline. Well-muscled hindquarters with well bent stifle joints and well angled hocks. This gave her the best movement of the breed, covering the ground with ease. Super compact feet and well arched toes. BEST OF BREED.

2. Wilson & Harrison’s Jenkir Artemis JW. An attractive feminine bitch who had a lovely side profile when stood. Good neck. Nicely muscled well rounded body with a good topline. Tail set on correctly. Hindquarters showed a good width of thigh, and short hocks. Good compact feet with well arched toes. I felt the front legs were placed too wide for me, which affected her front movement, which I found very hard to access. Her head had adequate profile and fill, but a little too much frontal curve for me. RESERVE BEST OF BREED.

3. Harrison’s Jenkir Hera.

4. Wilson & Harper’s Olmpusbulys Athena.

CAIRN TERRIER

JUNIOR (2)

1. Griffiths’ You’re So Bossy Seglavi with Wonderpaws (IMP POL). A very nice looking balanced red brindle, bitch, with good proportions. Correct small head, broad skull and defined stop. Good dark eyes and correctly set ears. Nice front with super tight elbows. Level topline and correctly set tail. Well sprung ribcage. Neat feet. Well-presented wonderful coat. Weather-resistant harsh topcoat and soft under-coat. Moved well for her handler, but not much animation. BEST OF BREED.

POST GRADUATE (3)

1. Griffiths’ You’re So Bossy Seglavi with Wonderpaws (IMP POL). AS ABOVE.

2. Metcalf-Sault’s Cannwood Quiet Reflections. It was a shame she was so apprehensive. Feminine head with dark points. Neat small ears and dark expressive eyes. The overall shape, size and tail set was correct. Difficult to assess her well as she did not want to show herself off. Movement appeared sound. Very good weather-proof coat.

OPEN (1)

1. Metcalf-Sault’s Cannwood Can’t Get Enough. A good type with not quite enough bone for me, even for a bitch. Nice head, good eyes, a stop and heavily coated ears. Held her topline well on the move and moved OK. Correct Cairn coat. RESERVE BEST OF BREED.

GLEN OF IMAAL TERRIER

PUPPY (1)

1. Hannington’s Boudivella Love Story. What a lovely puppy with such an appealing personality. Super masculine, well-proportioned head. Well defined stop, powerful foreface and good bite, finished off with correct ears. Super front construction. Nice length of body with well sprung ribcage, correct topline and tail set. Chest developing well. He moved with style, covering the ground effortlessly, with drive from behind. Nicely boned and muscled, presented in excellent condition. Correct coat of harsh texture and soft undercoat. Certainly, one to watch. I hope he goes on to win as much as his father! BEST PUPPY & RESERVE BEST OF BREED.

JUNIOR (1)

1. Hannington’s Boudivella Fire Cracker. I judged her as a puppy and she did very well in the group. She is going through that teenage stage at the moment, not co-operating with her handler and her coat ‘was on the blow.’ Good width of head and powerful foreface, with well-defined stop. Correct, strong mouth, with good jaws. Brown, appealing eyes and super ears. She is very well made and presented a lovely outline. Excellent top-line, hindquarters were strong and well-muscled. She moved freely. Appeared a bit fat. I look forward to seeing her again when she has matured.

OPEN (2)

1. Hannington’s Ch/Int/Bel/Ch/Nl/Esp Ch Boudivella Osca VW. One of my old favourites. I fell in love with this chap as soon as I saw him and thought he was gorgeous. He is literally 10 years old now and still does not look it. A very worthy champion, I am pleased he is still looking good, structurally and coat wise. Beautiful conformation and movement. His coat is a lovely ‘eye catching’ colour with a harsh outer coat and soft undercoat, completing the picture. I hope his son will make him proud in the future. BEST OF BREED.

ANY VARIETY TERRIER VETERAN (12)

1. Curtis’ Skye Terrier, Ch Verumamicus Aurora of Brakemill JW OSW. Another of my old favourites, as was her father. It was hard to choose between these two ‘oldies.’ A quality bitch, with a long, powerful head and strong muzzle. Super eyes, full of expression. Ears nicely placed and covered with feathering. Strong jaw and correct scissor bite. Good neck and shoulder placement. Nice depth of chest. Long, low body with level top line. Oval ribcage, deep and long. Strong well developed and angulated hindquarters. Giving free, effortless fluid movement. Excellent tail carriage. Beautiful clear cream coat, in super condition with lovely dark markings on ears and muzzle. Very good muscle tone, body condition and bone for an older dog. She held her topline very well and moved well. I was very pleased to see she went Best Veteran in Show. BEST VETERAN TERRIER.

2. Hannington’s Glen of Imaal Terrier, Ch/Int/Bel/Ch/Nl/Esp Ch Boudivella Osca VW. AS BEFORE.

3. Metcalf-Sault’s Cairn Terrier, Cannwood Call Me Aggie.

4. Bowman’s Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Kargonstaffs Kohana at Kamiflo.
