Hound Club Of East Anglia

Breed: Basenji, Basset hound, Greyhound

Thank you to the committee for the invitation to judge at this prestigious hound club. The venue was wonderful, and we were blessed with large rings that enabled the hounds to really showcase their movement. Thank you to my two stewards, Mary and Simone, who helped to keep everything ticking over in good time. Lastly, thank you to the exhibitors for entering their hounds and for accepting my decisions in such a sporting manner.

LIMIT 1

1st Knights & Stokes, Messrs D & J Lelaps Time Lord Aristocratic red and white, coming up to 2 years old. He impressed me with his overall type and pleasing body proportions. I loved his masculine, yet elegant head that was attractively wrinkled; he has the darkest of eyes and small, slightly hooded ears. His beautifully crested neck fits smoothly into a well-made front assembly; he stands on quality, fine bone with small compact feet, though to be picky I would prefer more of an arch to his toes. He is level in topline with a short, muscular loin, his high set curled tail completed the picture. He excelled on the move with his brisk and accurate footfall and covered the ground well in profile. After judging finished, I found out that he is sitting on 2 CCs. I am sure his third will not be far away. BOB & RBIS

BASSET HOUND

PUPPY 2

Two wonderful Basset hound puppies who I expect will have bright futures.

1st McClean, Mrs P A Lauralee Dreams of Magic at Stookewood Well grown and confident 6-month-old red and white bitch. She came into the ring full of character and promise and didn’t disappoint me when I saw her up close. She has a fabulous head that is elegantly domed, with clean, dark eyes and long, beautifully folded velvety ears. Balanced in angulations fore and aft, she has a good depth of chest and prominent breastbone, although she is just standing a little bum high at the moment. She moved around the ring with plenty of scope, a promising puppy. BP

2nd Jones, Mrs S B & Mr K R Clanwillow Kiss The Girl Well developed 8-month-old red and white bitch of pleasing size and outline. I loved her head that was nicely proportioned, with expressive dark eyes and lovely length to her flews. She is ample boned and bodied, with depth and width to her chest, level topline and broad, muscular loin. She moved round the ring with a smooth, steady action though just a little close in rear at present.

POST GRADUATE 1

1st Jones, Mrs S B & Mr K R Clanwillow All That Jazz Pretty 12-month-old tri bitch. She is nicely made with super bone and substance and stands on large, well-padded feet. Her strong, muscular neck fits smoothly into a lovely lay of shoulder, with her elbows fitting neatly by her side. Sturdy in body, she is level in topline with a short, slightly arched loin. Pleasing side gait, a promising youngster.

LIMIT 2

1st Jones, Mrs S B & Mr K R Clanwillow Fire and Ice JW Lots to appreciate about this quality, balanced 20-month-old tri colour male. This boy is right up my street - he is eye-catching and very much a showman. Fabulous, masculine head of correct planes and prominent occiput. His strong, arched neck fits smoothly into a well-made front assembly; he has a super depth of chest with a nicely rounded ribcage and short, broad loin. His rear quarters are full and muscular with low set, parallel hocks and more than enough ground clearance underneath him. He powered around the ring, true in all directions, his stern set low and carried sabre fashion. BOB

2nd McClean, Mrs P A Switherland Gabriella at Stookewood Classic 4-year-old red blanket bitch. Beautiful, breed typical head with a lovely Roman nose and strength to her underjaw. She has a good reach of neck and a nicely made forequarters with a good depth of chest and prominent sternum. Her back is broad and well-ribbed, although not as strong in topline as 1st. She used her strongly muscled rear quarters to her advantage, moving steadily around the ring, her long tail set and carried correctly. RBOB

GREYHOUND

PUPPY 2

Two well grown and nicely reared littermates who were at different stages of development.

1st Bakewell, Miss K M Estet Classic Sherwood Adventures (Imp Est) Balanced and curvy ‘colt like’ 7-month-old dark brindle male, now he just needs time to develop into his large frame. His skull is long with a slight stop, he has dark, oval shaped eyes and beautifully rosed ears. Good reach of neck that blends smoothly into a decent front assembly, with fair depth of chest and enough infill for age. His back is long and broad with a lovely curvy underline, shapely croup and correct tail set. Sound coming and going, a promising puppy. BP & RBOB

2nd Samson, Miss L Estet Classic Sherwood Tales of Romaclove (Imp Est) Rangy 7-month-old dark brindle male. I think this boy will take a while to mature, and when he does, he should be a very shapely hound. Balanced, typical head with mesmerizing dark eyes and nicely held ears. His long, muscular neck fits smoothly into a decent layback of shoulder, with straight forelegs legs and compact, well-knuckled feet. Not quite the depth nor width of chest as 1st. His back is well-ribbed with a short, muscular loin. I liked his rear, which was broad, with well bent stifles and width to second thigh. Presented in a short, fine, gleaming coat he moved steadily around the ring although just a little close in rear.
