Breed: Open Show

Thank you for the invitation to judge at this well-organised and homely show. It reminded me of how shows used to be when I was growing up and evoked a lot of memories. Thank you also to my awesome stewards who kept everything flowing like clockwork.

Golden Retriever

P (5, 2a): 1 BP, BOB & PG2 Sloan & Hunter’s Palmonas Call My Bluff, 8 months dog, lovely tight round feet, very smart, strong bone through the forearms, holds an excellent level topline, good turn of stifle. Moved the best in the challenge for BOB – concise & with drive; 2 Nelson’s Cadwst Song Of Spring, raw cream bitch of 9 months, presents with a lovely outline, very feminine girl but with strength, pretty head with dark eye & pigment, good ribbing; 3 Shaw’s Aurgentious Melion An Ki at Akenscales.

J (4, 2): 1 P Call My Bluff; 2 Hill’s Drumkilty One Night Stand for Sandaula, cream bitch of 14 months with fully charged batteries today! Catlike feet, strong bone, really happy & headstrong – just needs to settle as she pulls forward.

PG (9, 3): Difficult class to judge with not much in it. 1 Nelson’s Cadwst Autumnal Magic, cream bitch of 4 years, well balanced throughout, pretty head, clean neck, corresponding angles fore & aft, moved the best in the class; 2 Sloan’s Palmonas Glitterball SGWC, presents a lovely picture standing - balanced & flows with good layback of shoulder, she had the best outline, taut across the loin. Pretty girl but was crabbing a little today. Dam of BOB; 3 Robertshaw’s Akenscales Beau Baron JW.

O (5, 2): 1 Akenscales Waterloo, mature male of 4 years, strong bone through the forearms, appeals in outline, good layback of shoulder, tight feet, a little unsettled on the move; 2 Silver Passion Glam Fashion at Nunsbrook JW (Imp), smart male, strong bone through the forearms, tight elbows, steadier on the move although tail a slight distraction; 3 D One Night Stand for S.

Pointer

P (1): 1 BP & PG3 Gates’ Sharnphilly Dizzy Blonde at Linosa, o/w tightly made bitch of 10 months. Stacks up well and really comes into her own on the move where she relaxes, using her tail & has a joyous connection with her handler. Pretty head, clean neck which is slightly arched, taut loin & well-muscled hindquarters. Well handled.

J (1): 1 BOB Gordon’s Hawkfield Happy Times JW, o/w white bitch of 17 months, stacks up lovely, curvy lines, good rear angulation, in lovely muscled condition, strong rear pasterns. She is quite young so still needs to drop into her front a little more & tighten there. Good use of her tail on the move.

PG (2, 1): 1 Gordon’s Hawkfield Lemonie Snickett, feminine lemon & white bitch of 3 years, tightly made in her body, clean over the topline, good rear angulation & muscled quarters. Her front construction is not her fortune.

O (1): 1 Gordon’s Hawkfield Pemberley, b/w male of 4 years, stacks up well, appeals in head, brisket down to elbow, masculine all through. Preferred front movement of his kennelmate for BOB.

GWP

O (1): 1 BOB & G4 McCullough’s Kimmax Kiss Ma Blackside at Beechillawn, upstanding mature black & white ticked male of 4 years, presents a smart outline standing, well balanced head proportions with strong muzzle, well laid shoulders, excellent topline, moved well. Good texture to coat – harsh to the touch.

Lagotto Romagnolo

P (1): BP Thomas’ Arcticbreeze On The Double (AI), excitable brown roan dog of 10 months, correct proportions from ground to elbow to elbow to withers, correct front construction, good rear angulation. Tends to lose topline on the move but this may settle in time.

J (1): BOB & G1 Fitton Skeen & Bond’s Spencer Tracy, really smart brown & white male, only just out of Puppy. A stand out on the table & moving. Lovely to go over – correct proportions from ground to elbow to elbow to withers, squarely built, good topline & rear angulation. Strong through the rear pasterns. Good coat - evident guard hairs. Should do well on sheer quality.

PG (1): Beckett’s Nelbekio Ideal Isabella, orange & white bitch of 3 years, lovely expression, correctly made through the front, coat feels thick to the touch.

O (2): 1 Nelson’s Mizani Dioro over Savio, brown roan veteran who won the class on movement, quite a cocky chap – showy – which was lovely to see. Definitely a boy, dense coat, strength through the rear pasterns, moved well; 2 Nelson’s Nelbekio Just The Ticket, brown & white bitch of 2 years, feminine, more typical through the front with good proportions, but 1 was much more positive on the move.

AVNSC Gundog

P (3, 1): 1 BP & PG4 House’s l/w English Springer Spaniel, Gleadsbury Mad About The Boy, 7 months, won the class on movement, nice to go over, good bone quality, nothing is overdone, kind eye, beautiful healthy gloss on the coat; 2 Stead’s blue belton English Setter, Ravensett Illusionist of Settavista, masculine boy, 4 days shy of 12 months. Strong bone, good topline, excellent ribbing, starting to enter his teenage growth phase. Well handled.

J (3,1): Morris & Langton’s tricolour American Cocker Spaniel, Arrowbien Nina Ricci at Jennobar, tricolour bitch of 13 months, strong bone through the forearms but still feminine, good ribbing, good turn of stifle, moved well; 2 R Illusionist of S.

PG (7, 3): 1 BAVNSC Gundog & G3 Merry’s l/w English Springer Spaniel, Gleadsbury It Is Destiny for Anacapa, mature male of 2 years, appeals standing & moving, lovely head, good topline, lovely to go over, good bend of stifle, rear pasterns vertical to the ground. Well handled. Brother to the BP AVNSC; 2 Disley’s black Curly Coated Retriever, Firecurl Redwing, just over 18 months, strong but feminine, pretty wedge shaped head, brisket down to elbows, well laid shoulders, thick coat, good mover; 3 Hope-Cliffe & Hope Ellershaw’s Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla, Redrafi Pacha Galvikki.

O (3, 2): 1 Adshead’s Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, Sh Ch Afonbach Winter Is Coming JW, 7 years, catches your eye on the stack, holds good posture & level topline, good bone, deep chest, elbows tight to the chest wall. very well handled. Little heavy over the shoulders today.

AV Imported Breed Register Gundog

O (2): 1 BAVIBR McCullough’s Korthals Griffon, Fidelix Special Edition at Kimmax, smart mature boy of 3 years with harsh jacket, masculine, plenty of bone, slightly longer than tall, & well defined musculature of the hindquarters; 2 Grime’s Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer, Ansona Jazzmin, stands up well & is balanced in outline with a level topline. Good feet, well muscled throughout & very well handled. I would prefer more bone & substance.

AV Gundog Veteran (13, 6): 1 McMahon’s Weimaraner, Ir Sh Ch Silverkelvin Jupiter over Magdala CW22, upstanding male of 7 years, handsome head, well sprung ribs, strong over the topline, moved well with strong rear pasterns. Happy temperament. He has a little middle age spread now understandably but I think a trimmer waistline could be quite transformative for his outline; 2 Sh Ch A Winter Is Comg JW; 3 M Dioro over S.
