Cocker Spaniels

A heartfelt thank you to the East Anglian Gundog Society and its committee for inviting me to judge Cocker Spaniels — it was a thoroughly delightful day. I’m especially grateful to my steward, who was fantastic and kept the ring running efficiently throughout. The quality of dogs was superb, making for some very close decisions and a very enjoyable judging appointment.

Puppy (2 Entries) Abs: 0

1st – Gladman’s Classagh’s Footsteps to Chativore (BPIB)

11-month-old Light Blue Roan bitch. She has a beautiful head, and sweet feminine expression. She has a lovely angulation both front and rear, presenting a balanced square outline when stacked. She really excels in body, with fantastic spring of rib and depth of chest for her age. She is short in loin, and very cobby. Once settled, she moves accurately with good drive, and lovely tail action. Happy to award her Best Puppy in Breed.

2nd – Brothwell’s Annilann Da Business at Wissant

8-month-old Blue Roan Dog. A close decision in this class. He has an attractive masculine head, which is developing nicely for his age. He also has good angles throughout and presents a good outline, I just found him a shade longer in loin than 1st. On the move he moved well both coming and going and was certainly enjoying himself! I will be interested to see how he develops as he matures.

Junior (8 Entries) Abs: 2

1st – Cox’s Ryallcourt Charm of Unique to Suvern (AI)

17-month-old Black and White Dog. Really nice masculine head of good proportions; loved his expression so gentle with a glimmer of mischief. Good depth of chest, well sprung ribs and nice tight elbows. Good level topline held well on the move. A sound and steady mover using his well-muscled rear to drive around the ring, using his tail well to advantage.

2nd – Hutton-Baber’s Babtonkelpie Cop the Lot

13-month-old Dark Blue Roan bitch who really held her own in this class for one recently out of puppy. Her head is developing nicely with good proportions, would prefer slightly tighter eyes. Her neck is clean leading to fine shoulders. She has excellent spring of rib, and good width throughout. Front and rear angles balanced. Once she settled, she displayed accurate movement with good power and drive.

3rd – Clifford’s Wyncastle’s Saint Laurent Avec Chamford JW (Imp Hun)

Post Graduate (9 Entries) Abs: 1

1st – Randall’s Fengrange Defender Boy

2-year-old Blue Roan Dog, who won this class on his movement. Masculine head piece, lovely dark eyes giving him that melting cocker expression. Good bone and strength throughout. Nicely angulated at front and rear, good ribs but would prefer him a tad shorter in loin. He really came alive on the move. Excellent driving action round the ring with good use of his tail, which won him the class.

2nd – Ward’s Whinburn Walk the Moon to Wensum JW

18-month-old Black Dog. Preferred his head to 1st, very nice proportions and lovely expression. He presents a square outline when stacked, nice and short in loin with good angles throughout. He is coming on nicely with everything in the right place, just felt he needed a bit more maturity in body which will no doubt come as he develops further. He was steady and accurate on the move.

3rd – Hutton-Baber’s Babtonkelpie Galley Queen

Limit (5 Entries) Abs: 1

1st – Hutson’s Stobytill Bootylicious (RBOB)

4-year-old Blue Roan Bitch. She really caught my eye when stacked, presenting a fabulous outline, so square with nothing overdone, and I was certainly not disappointed upon going over her. Feminine head piece with sweet expression. Her shoulders are fine and sloping and her elbows are tight. Nice spring of rib, and short strong loin. Easy mover looked as though she could’ve gone all day. Pushed BOB all the way, pleased to award her Reserve Best of Breed.

2nd – Cox’s Ryallcourt Charm of Unique to Suvern (AI)

Repeat from Junior Class

3rd – Brothwell’s Wissant Uptown Girl

Open (7 Entries) Abs: 2

1st – Marris-Bray’s Plaiglen Biker Babe to Helenwood JW (BOB)

21-month-old Black Bitch, who really took my eye in this class, very striking outline, square with good angulation all round. She has a very pretty, feminine head with beautiful expression. Muscled neck leading to well-placed shoulders. Good depth of chest. Her ribs are well sprung, leading to short and strong loin. Super driving action on the move with very accurate footfall. Well set tail used well on the move. Her coat presentation was fantastic; she is in excellent condition and was expertly handled. Pleased to award her Best of Breed and to later hear she was awarded Reserve Best in Show; Well Done!

2nd – Collings’ Chativore Sea Pebble at Colmandakev

2-year-old Blue Roan Bitch. Another with a good feminine head piece and gentle yet cheeky expression. She has a strong and compact body, with excellent spring of rib. Good balanced angulation front and rear. She is well muscled and has good depth of chest and width over the rear. Once settled, she demonstrated good movement with drive and good use of her tail.
