FINNISH LAPPHUND CLUB OF GREAT BRITAIN
Championship Show – 12th April 2025
A thoroughly enjoyable day was spent officiating at the Finnish Lapphund Club of Great Britain’s Championship Show held during the Club’s 30th Anniversary Year and my grateful thanks to the Officers and Committee for considering me worthy of such an appointment.
There is depth of quality in the breed and you have some very good breeders amongst your ranks; I do hope their talent will rub off on to others to safeguard true Lapphund type for years to come. Some general observations; the standard calls for a strongly built dog which is smaller than medium size, this does not mean small and to be strongly built, the breed needs to be well-boned. Also, we are looking for a soft expression and round eyes do not lend themselves to this and neither do light eyes. Finally, movement always adds another dimension into the mix when judging any breed and is not always easy to maintain within a breeding programme – on the whole I thought the breed was in a pretty good place in this area and there were some outstandingly well-constructed Lapphunds in today’s entry.
VD (4,1)
1. Samuel’s Oberitz Upponalle. 9 yr old who very much appealed. He pleased for type, carries good bone and impressed when gone over. He presented a well-balanced outline with muscular neck, is firm in topline, ribbing extends well back, short loin, correct croup and tail good for both set and carriage. Masculine head with breadth to skull, pleasing proportions, expressive oval-shaped eyes and ears set on correctly. Pleasing angles front and rear and standing on good feet. Moves out with correct length of stride and good carriage. Well handled.
2. Lloyd’s Ir Ch Arianrhod Finntroll JW. Another of 9 yrs who gave the winner a run for his money. Presented in super condition, well boned and nicely balanced with moderate length of neck, straight back, excellent ribbing and tail set on high. Super headed lad with good skull to muzzle proportions, expressive eyes, ears set well apart and scissor bite. Moderate angulation front and rear and stands true. Impressed when coming towards and gaiting with moderate length of stride in profile.
3. Small & Thompson’s Ansalfrose Jani
Special Vintage D (3,1)
1. Cooper & Critchlow’s Ch Pavoskas Aly Arttu JW ShCM ShCEx VW. Two quality males challenged in this class with the nod going to this 10 yr old. Presented in excellent condition, this lad makes the most of himself at all times and does all that is asked. I thought him a super type and so very well balanced and certainly didn’t disappoint hands on. Moderate length of neck, firm topline, correct ribbing, muscular loin and tail set on high. Attractive head with masculine expression; super eye and ear, defined stop and correct dentition. He stands well naturally on very good feet and has excellent side gait and carriage. Good quality coat. Best Veteran Dog.
2. Meikle & Henderson’s Ch Marymead Muskateer ShCM VW. 13 yr old who unfortunately wasn’t in full coat on the day but shown with excellent muscle-tone considering his age and another showy chap who was enjoying his time in the ring. He has a tad more neck than the winner, made more apparent by the lack of coat, but he is still nicely balanced. Firm backline with good length to ribcage, muscular loin and tail set on well. Balanced headpiece with good skull, stop and ear placement, super expressive eyes and excellent dentition. Stands true in front on good feet and is moderately angulated.

Moderately broad skull, ears set on well, eyes a tad rounder, correct length to muzzle and scissor bite. Moderately angulated front and rear and stands nice and straight in front on correct oval-shaped feet. Moves out briskly on the go around. Good coat.

1. Lloyd’s Arianrhod Havukruunu (AI). Two nice but somewhat different dogs challenged in this class who turned out to be 14 mth old litter brothers. This boy was my winner, pleasing for size and outline although, as you would expect at this age, he has quite a lot of maturing to do. Neck of medium length, firm in topline, ribbing developing well and carried well back and tail of good carriage. Head of correct proportions with attractive expression; ears set well apart, oval-shaped eyes of good colour and scissor bite. Moderately angulated front and rear, straight forelegs and oval-shaped feet. Moves out with moderate length of stride and good carriage.
2. Short’s Arianrhod Aavevalo to Glenchess (AI). Another balanced youngster but out of a larger mould than 1. Muscular neck of moderate length, firm straight back, good length to ribcage, short in the couplings and tail set on high and of good carriage. Pleasing head and expression with good proportions, excellent skull, defined stop, good eye and ear and correct dentition. Carrying good bone, he has pleasing angles front and rear and moves well on the go around but winner just had the edge on the down and back. Profuse coat of good texture.

Most attractive head and expression with breadth to skull, oval-shaped eyes, ears of correct size and set, defined stop and scissor bite. PGD (6,1)
1. Whyman & Murray’s Lappviken Keltainen of Manu JW. For me this 18 mth old was a comfortable winner in this class. He appealed for overall type and presented a super outline with muscular neck of moderate length, firm straight topline, ribbing carried well back, nice and short in the couplings and tail set on high and of good carriage. Masculine head of good proportions with attractive expression; ears set on well apart, defined stop, oval-shaped eyes of good colour and scissor bite. Soundly constructed all through and stands true on well arched oval-shaped feet. Gaiting freely with excellent profile action and carriage. Profuse coat of good texture. Very well handled and winning a well-deserved RCC here today.
2. Daly’s Tabanyaruu Borealis Boo. This 2 yr old presents quite a different outline to the winner but there is still plenty to like and he is well boned and shown here in good coat. Moderate length of neck, firm topline, pleasing spring of rib and ribbing extending well back, muscular loin and tail set on well. Nicely proportioned head with excellent skull, ears set on well apart, eyes a tad rounder, good muzzle and dentition. Moderately angulated front and rear and he stands well naturally on good feet. Moving briskly on the go around but not down and back action of 1.
3. Bright’s Alkantara Talvi Kuu
LD (6,0)
1. Meikle & Henderson’s Elbereth Etiainen at Lintukoto. 23 mth old who greatly appealed and was so good to go over. Super outline with excellent neck, firm through the topline, moderately sprung ribs which extend well back, nice short loin and tail set on high. Well proportioned, masculine headpiece with expressive oval-shaped eyes, ears set well apart, slightly tapering muzzle and scissor bite. Correct angulation front and rear, straight well-boned forelegs and standing on very good feet. When gaiting, he caught my eye on the go around and has excellent carriage. Well handled.
2. Critchlow & Francis-Christie’s Pavoskas Forest JW. Approaching 4 yrs, this was another good one but quite different to the winner. He has a little more length to him but pleased in neck, is firm in topline and tail is set on nice and high. Ribbing could be a tad more developed but ribcage carries well back. Super head and expression; good skull to muzzle proportions, defined stop, excellent eye and ear and correct dentition. Pleasing angles both ends and he stands true in front on oval-shaped feet. Another who goes well when viewed in profile. Profuse coat.
3. Allison’s Lahetyaby Keskiyon Kuu by Oberitz
OD (4,1)
1. Short’s Ch Glenchess Gregory. 3 quite different dogs challenged in this class and my winner was found in this 9 yr old. Quality lad who is well-boned, of excellent type, presenting such a good outline and impressed hands on. Muscular neck of correct length to balance, firm straight topline, super ribbing which is of good length, short in the couplings, correct croup and tail set on high. Head of correct proportions, defined stop, ears set well apart and eyes of good colour. Well-constructed all through and stands nice and straight in front on good feet. Gaiting true when coming and going and pleased on the go around too. Profuse coat of good texture.
2. Samuel’s Ch Oberitz Buoremus. 5 yr old who I see is a son of the winner although I wouldn’t have guessed. He too pleased and is another very good Lappie. Balanced in outline with moderate length of neck, firm through the backline, correct ribbing which extends well back, short muscular loin and tail good for set and carriage. Masculine headpiece with good proportions, medium sized ears set on well, expressive oval-shaped eyes and scissor bite. Pleasing angles front and rear and standing on well arched oval feet. Goes so well when viewed in profile but 1 had the edge on the down and back. Very well handled.

1. Forsey’s Ch Arianrhod Black Sun Aeon at Muzoku. 5 yr old right out of the top drawer and fully mature. Excelling for type, carrying good bone and a delight to go over. He presents a super outline with muscular neck of correct length, firm straight topline, first class ribbing, short in the couplings, slight slope to croup and tail set on high and of good carriage. Quality head with the best of skulls, dark oval-shaped eyes, ears of correct size and placed well apart, defined stop, muzzle of correct length to balance and scissor bite – each part combining to create a masculine expression but retaining the softness desirable in the breed. Soundly constructed lad all through, standing nice and straight in front on oval-shaped feet and firm, muscular hindquarters. Gaiting freely all through with excellent carriage and so very well handled. Profuse coat of correct texture. CC & Reserve Best in Show.

Feminine headpiece with good skull to muzzle proportions, defined stop, ears set on just right, expressive eyes good for shape and colour, slightly tapering muzzle and scissor bite. Carrying good bone, she is well made throughout, standing true in front with well-developed forechest. Gaiting freely all through and particularly good on the go around. Good quality coat. Neck of correct length to balance, firm in topline, good length to ribcage which is moderately sprung, short muscular loin and tail set on high. Well-proportioned head with feminine expression, ears set on well apart, eyes a fraction rounder, defined stop, good muzzle and correct dentition. Pleasing angles front and rear and she stands well in front on correct oval-shaped feet. She went well when viewed in profile and is accurate when coming towards but somewhat closer behind. 3. Bright’s Glenchess Satakieli of Alkantara
Special Vintage B (5,1)
1. Jackson’s Ch Tilkkuturkin Hallantuoma to Elbereth JW ShCM VW (Imp Fin). 10 yr old who has so much to like, is feminine all through and certainly very lively! She scored in outline here with muscular neck of moderate length, firm through the topline, excellent ribbing, short in the couplings and tail good for both set and carriage. Nicely proportioned head with feminine expression, defined stop, excellent eye and correct scissor bite but ears set closer together than preferred. She is of sound construction both ends, standing well naturally and certainly didn’t disappoint when gaiting. Good quality coat.
2. Lock’s Ch Bridus Pikkumimmi JW VW. 12 yr old who was shown in super condition considering her years and she was good hands on. Well boned, she pleased in outline with muscular neck, straight back, moderately sprung ribs which are carried well back, short loin and tail set on well. Feminine head with good skull to muzzle proportions, clearly defined stop, ears of correct size and set and scissor bite but eyes just a tad rounder. 3. Aristides-Pickard’s Sambreeze Tiianmaria
MPB (3,0)
1. Fowler’s Whinfoss Kesanlehvisto at Lapinruska (AI). The three pups competing here turned out to be 8 mth old littermates. This girl was my winner and I felt she took the class with some room to spare. Totally feminine, she pleased in outline with correct length of neck to balance, is firm in topline, ribbing developing as it should for age and tail of good carriage. Pleasing head proportions, defined stop, ears good for size and set and scissor bite. Standing true in front on correct feet and she moved out with a good stride. Profuse coat.
2. Cross’ Whinfoss Kesalumikarhu (AI). Unfortunately this girl wasn’t at all settled and therefore didn’t give her best on the day, however, she secured this place on her outline and balance, having a neck of moderate length and correct length of body to height ratio. Her ribcage is of good length and she is short in the couplings. Feminine headpiece with good proportions, ears correctly set when using them and scissor bite. She stands straight in front and appeared to move well enough. Socialisation and ringcraft will hopefully help her gain confidence moving forward.
3. Ind & Francis’ Whinfoss Kesakaneli
PB (5,0)
1. Newby’s Lumikoira Frappuccino. Just approaching 12 mths this youngster was pleasing to go over and carries nice bone but a little more ring experience would be of benefit. Neck of medium length, nice and firm in topline, ribbing extends well back and is developing well for age, short loin and tail set on high. Feminine head with good skull to muzzle proportions, expressive eyes, ears set on pretty well and correct dentition. Moderate angles front and rear and she has nice straight forelegs and stands on good feet. Gaiting with moderate length of stride and pleased fore and aft too. Good coat. Best Puppy in Show.
2. Fowler’s Whinfoss Kesanlehvisto at Lapinruska (AI)
3. Allison’s Oberitz Valontuojatar
JB (6,2)
1. Moore’s Samerajerna’s Zaluda of Morval (Imp Swe). 17 mth old who stood out for me in this class and she was a delight hands on. She presented a super outline with neck of correct length to give balance, firm straight topline, ribbing just right for age, nice short loin and tail correct for both set and carriage. Most attractive head with feminine expression; correctly proportioned, clearly defined stop, excellent eye and ear and good dentition. Impressive front assembly with good forechest and firm, muscular hindquarters. Showy girl who moved freely all through. Good quality coat.
2. Lock’s Muzoku Black Opium. This 17 mth old girl also has lots to like but she wasn’t quite as balanced as 1, having a tad more length. Having said that she is another who is so very sound and was a joy to watch gaiting. Well-boned, she has a muscular neck of moderate length, correct topline, pleasing spring of rib and tail good for set and carriage. Balanced headpiece, full of femininity, good breadth to skull, defined stop and pleasing eye. She stands well naturally on oval-shaped feet and moved well all through with my notes saying ‘exceptional front and rear’.
3. Clark’s Aateli Koira Vakker Yuna at Lumenico (Imp Fra)
YB (2,0)
1. Jackson’s Ch Elbereth Unisieppari JW. Two quite different bitches competed here with my winner found in this girl of 23 mths and what a cracker she is! Carrying lovely bone, I thought her an exceptional type and she presented a beautifully balanced outline with neck of moderate length, firm straight topline, correct depth of brisket, ribbing moderately sprung and carried well back, short in the couplings, slight slope to croup and tail correct for set and carriage. I thought her head and expression the best in the whole entry and she certainly has that soft ‘teddy bear’ look; her skull to muzzle proportions are spot on, stop is clearly defined, eyes and ears just perfect, muzzle slightly tapering and there is strength to underjaw. Soundly built all through, she stands well naturally and certainly didn’t let herself down when gaiting; moving freely on the down and back and with excellent self-carriage. Good quality coat. RCC.
2. Crowhurst’s Lappviken Rubiini. This 18 mth old is another who has plenty of qualities but she is at the teenager stage right now and needs time to fill out. She pleased in outline with correct length of neck to balance, nice and straight in topline, good length to ribcage but ribbing to spring, short loin and tail set on well. Feminine headpiece, defined stop, eye of good colour but not quite shape of those of winner, ears set well apart and correct scissor bite. Pleasing angulation both ends and she stands on good feet. On the move, she went very well on the go around and carries herself well, is nice and true when coming towards but winner had the edge when going away.
NB (7,1)
1. Critchlow & Cooper’s Pavoskas Ilomieli. A rather varied class which saw this 22 mth old come out on top. Feminine throughout, she pleased for overall type and presented a nicely balanced outline with moderate length of neck, firm topline, correct ribbing, short muscular loin and tail set and carried well. Nicely proportioned head with attractive expression; ears set well apart, defined stop, oval-shaped eyes which blend with coat colour, slightly tapering muzzle and scissor bite. Moderately angulated, standing on good feet, moving well on the go around with good carriage and ok fore and aft. Profuse coat.
2. Clark’s Aateli Koira Vakker Yuna at Lumenico (Imp Fra). 13 mth old who was very well handled here. She presents a good outline with neck of correct length to balance, nice and firm in topline, ribbing extends well back, short loin and tail set on high. Feminine headpiece which is correctly proportioned, clearly defined stop, ears set on well apart, expressive eyes and scissor bite. She stands on correct oval-shaped feet and moved out nicely when viewed in profile, although 1 had the edge, and she was somewhat closer behind than I would prefer. Profuse coat of good texture.
3. Minion’s Lumikora Piparminttu
GB (6,0)
1. Birks’ Pavoskas Galena. Another class which I felt was somewhat varied. This 2 yr old was my winner and she was good to go over. She presented a nicely balanced outline with moderate length of neck, firm straight back, lovely ribbing, short in the loin and tail set on high and of good carriage. Feminine head with good skull to muzzle proportions, excellent stop, ears of correct size and set, eyes which blend with coat colour and correct dentition. Pleasing angles both front and rear and she stands nice and straight in front on good feet. Moving with moderate length of stride. Good coat.
2. Critchlow’s Pavoskas Iloilme. 22 mth old who is quite different in type to the winner. Feminine all through, she has a tad more neck than 1, pleasing topline, ribs moderately sprung and carried well back, short loin and tail set on well. Most attractive head with very nice eye and ear, muzzle tapering slightly and correct dentition. Moderately angulated forequarters, straight forelegs, well arched feet and firm, muscular hindquarters. Moves out with good carriage. Profuse coat.
3. Critchlow & Rudd’s Pavoskas Hiili Helmi
PGB (4,0)
1. Reynolds’ Elbereth Vain Yksi Lisaa. 23 mth old who very much appealed for overall type and balance. Muscular neck of correct length to give balance, firm straight topline, excellent ribbing, nice and short in the couplings, slight slope to croup and tail set on well. Quality head with nice breadth to skull, defined stop, super eye and ear, slightly tapering muzzle and scissor bite. Pleasing forequarters with clearly defined forechest, straight well-boned forelegs, excellent feet and firm, muscular hindquarters. Moved out with moderate length of stride and such good carriage, true when coming towards, just a tad closer in rear.
2. Greenland’s Skimarque Luminen Metsa from Rajarani. 2 yr old who was unfortunately out of coat on the day. Quite different to the winner but feminine all through. Moderate length of neck, firm straight topline, ribbing carried well back, correct croup which slopes slightly and tail pleased for both set and carriage. Nicely proportioned head with pleasing expression; oval-shaped eyes, ears set well apart, clearly defined stop and correct dentition. Moderately angulated both ends, standing on well arched oval-shaped feet and pleasing for forechest. Moving well on the go around but winner had the edge.
3. Minion’s Lumikora Piparminttu
LB (7,0)
1. Birkbeck & Enderby’s Pavoskas Flora. The first two here turned out to be 3 yr old litter sisters and they certainly are of a similar stamp. This girl wasn’t entirely settled but did more than enough to secure this win. Balanced in outline with correct length to neck, nice and firm in topline, moderately sprung ribs which extend well back, short loin and tail of good set and carriage. Attractive head with pleasing skull to muzzle proportions, defined stop, medium sized ears set on correctly, expressive oval-shaped eyes and scissor bite. She stands true in front on very good feet and went so well when viewed in profile and has good carriage. Good texture to her profuse coat.
2. Critchlow’s Pavoskas Fuchsia. This girl carries good bone and presented a very similar outline to her sister which correct length of neck to balance, firm straight back, excellent ribbing, nice and short in the loin and tail set on high. Feminine headpiece with comparatively broad skull, oval-shaped eyes which blend with coat colour, ears set well apart, slightly tapering muzzle and good dentition. She has pleasing angles front and rear and stands on well arched oval-shaped feet but action couldn’t quite match that of 1. Good coat.
3. Stanley’s Ansalfrose Wivi JW
OB (3,0)
1. Lloyd’s Ch Arianrhod Hallatar. Three nice but quite different bitches challenged in this class. This 5 yr old girl came out on top, appealing for overall type and was so good hands on. She presented a very well balanced outline with correct length of neck, firm in topline, ribcage extends well back and rib moderately sprung, nice and short in the couplings and high set tail of good carriage. Head of correct proportions with feminine expression; ears set on just right, excellent stop, dark eyes and scissor bite. Soundly built all through, standing true in front with good forechest and firm, muscular hindquarters. Moves freely with good carriage. Profuse coat of good texture.
2. Graystone’s Ch Morval Helina Keiju. 7 yr old who pushed the winner all the way. This girl carries lovely bone and is another so good in outline with neck of moderate length, straight topline, super ribbing, short muscular loin and tail set on well and of good carriage. Attractive head with pleasing skull to muzzle proportions, breadth to skull, clearly defined stop, expressive eyes, ears set on well and scissor bite. Good angles front and rear and she stands nice and straight in front on oval-shaped feet. I thought her profile action and carriage quite exceptional and she is nice and true when coming towards but winner just had the edge in rear, but having said that this girl does nothing untoward behind. Good quality coat
3. Allison’s Oberitz Tumma Ruhtinatar
GCB (6,2)
1. Critchlow & Rudd’s Pavoskas Hiili Helmi. 2 yr old out of a smaller mould. She carries good bone and is balanced with neck of medium length, nice firm topline, good length to ribcage, short loin and tail high set and of good carriage. Feminine expression with nice dark eyes, clearly defined stop and ears set on well apart but could perhaps do with a smidge more length to skull. Pleasing angles both front and rear and she stands on good feet. Gaiting briskly on the go around with good carriage and pretty good on the down and back. Profuse coat.
2. Ellis & Crosby’s Tabanyaruu Borealis Bliz. This 2 yr old is quite different in outline to the winner and has more scope; this is not meant in a negative way and she pleased for neck, is firm in topline, has a good length to ribcage and tail is set on well. Nicely proportioned head with femininity, correct skull, ears set on well apart, scissor bite and ok for eye colour. She has pleasing angulation both front and rear and she stands on correct oval-shaped feet. Moves out well on the go around and true when coming towards, just a tad closer when going away. Very well handled.
3. Proctor’s Alkantara Talvi Hamara with Cathbri
Champion B (3,1)
1. Anderson & Nardone’s Ch Limishka Kareitar JW. 4 yr old right out of the top drawer and she was an absolute delight to go over, feminine all through and strongly built as the Lapphund should be. I thought her an excellent example of the breed and she presented a first class silhouette such is her balance. Neck of moderate length, firm straight topline, correct spring of rib with ribcage carried well back, short in the couplings and tail set on high which she carries well. Feminine headpiece with breadth to skull, expressive oval-shaped eyes, ears set on well apart, clearly defined stop, slightly tapering muzzle of correct length to balance and scissor bite. As sound as they come, standing foot perfect at all times and showing herself off to advantage. When gaiting, she is accurate on the down and back and could not be faulted on the go around. Excellent coat and so very well handled. CC & Best in Show.
2. Proctor’s Ir Ch Bridus Ihana with Cathbri ShCM. 12 yr old who pleased for bone and was presented here in super condition. She is a little longer cast and therefore is quite different in outline to the winner, although she pleased for topline, has a good spring of rib and tail is set on nice and high which she carries well. Feminine head and expression with good skull, defined stop, eyes of good colour, medium sized ears of correct set and good dentition. Moderately angulated both ends and she stands nice and straight in front on correct feet. Moves out pretty well on the go around. Good coat.
Brood Bitch (4,0)
1. Lloyd’s Glenchess Nightwish for Arianrhod. 12 yr old who herself is full of quality but age is beginning to catch up with her. She certainly proved her worth in the whelping box and can produce type and construction and among many other winners here today, she is the dam of the Dog CC. Not only that, it looks like her kids have gone on to be producers too!
2. Lloyd’s Ch Arianrhod Hallatar. 5 yr old daughter of the winner accompanied by two of her sons and the type is clearly there.
3. Downing’s Lumikoira Inki at Whinfoss
Stud Dog (1,0)
1. Cooper & Critchlow’s Ch Pavoskas Aly Arttu JW ShCM ShCEx VW. My Best Veteran Dog here today. Clearly not only a super example of the breed himself, he has gone on to sire some beautiful Lapphunds and given the way he looks at the age he is now, perhaps others should take advantage of using this super boy.
Special Breeders’ Team (5,1)
1. Mrs T T Lloyd. What a super class this was. The first three breeders in this class should be applauded for their efforts and talent in producing consistently good Lapphunds and I hope others will be inspired to emulate similar results in the whelping box.
