Richmond General Championship Show

English Setters

7th September 2025

I would like to thank the officers and committee of Richmond Ch show for inviting me to judge at their show. I was delighted with the superb entry and would like to thank each and every exhibitor for allowing me to judge their English Setters. I never take for granted the time effort and expense involved in dog showing. Thanks must go to my very efficient stewards for keeping me to time and the pleasant interaction with exhibitors!

I last judged three years ago not long to change things in the breed, there were faults that I had to disregard and compromise in my final placings. Be assured I was very aware, but I tried not to compromise on the points I feel are very important, Breed type and movement. It was a hot day and the ground was challenging, but the dogs that were balanced with good muscle and handled well had no problem with the conditions.

DOGS

Veteran Dog1st Salmons Tattersett Emminent Smart orange boy 7 years old, he stood alone but all the attributes of a true gentleman, pleasing head and expression. Good length of neck into reasonable shoulders, slightly dipped topline when standing, good rear angulation. Moved steadily, in good condition.

Minor Puppy Dog

1st Thacker & Thackers Peritye Follow The Sun 8 month old baby with so much growing to do. Head proportions are balanced with gentle expression, good length of neck into clean shoulders, topline level, a tad long in body but when he fills his frame he will look balanced. Tail set low, good rear angulation, neat feet. Movement not quite together yet, just time needed for this young man.

Puppy Dog

1st Taylors Kanietter Goldmandine of Tattay Very attractive light blue 9 months, quality youngster refined head, would prefer darker eye. Good length of neck into well laid shoulder, super forearm angulation. Level topline. Correct depth of chest for age. Correct tail set and good rear angulation. In super coat and condition. Movement requires a little work not totally balanced but hopefully this will come with maturity as overall he presents a pleasing outline. BP

Junior

1st Beasleys Latjeata Jack’s The Lad 13 month Blue dog at that in between stage. Pleasing head and expression although would like a darker eye. Well balanced in outline and good overall proportions. Although lacking in coat the frame is there, lots to like about this young man. Movement was fine coming towards me, but he was unbalanced going away… maybe the ground.

Yearling (7:2a)

1st Tompsett Radbrooks Brothers In Arms At 18 months this blue dog looks immature, he has quite a masculine head, lovely dark eye and cheeky expression. Good reach of neck and forearm angulation short coupled, good topline with firm loin but falls away at croup resulting in low tail set. Good rear angulation and although a touch on the small side he is well made with good bone. He won this class on his superb movement. Balanced surefooted and stylish, beautifully handled, his drive viewed side on was sublime.

2nd Derry Schoneville & Williamsons Hawklawn Hazzard County At Balvenie JW At almost 2 this dark tri has still to mature but what a quality boy he is, masculine head but refined with soft expression. Displays super reach of neck flowing into well laid shoulders with excellent depth of chest and well sprung ribs. Firm level topline enhanced by strong quarters and good tail action. Just could not match the free easy movement of 1. I felt he really wanted to extend his forward drive but never got going; this unbalanced him and affected the final picture.

3rd Whittington & Whittington’s Culverwell Magic Touch

Post Graduate (8:4a)

1st Goutorbes Wansleydale Beekeeper At Redhara Dark tri who excelled in breed type, not overdone in any way. Balanced outline with a lovely shaped head and expressive eyes. Everything in proportion from his long neck and well placed shoulders to his firm topline and correct depth of chest. Good rear angulation, well- muscled in superb coat and condition. Moved so well in the class, considered him for the RCC just needs more time to mature.

2nd Warrington’s Culverwell Sundancer Cracking Orange with so much class. I think on another day he would be my winner. Just that bit more maturity than 1 at this moment, in slightly larger mould with everything so correct. Gorgeous head with true setter expression just that overall hint of masculinity. Good depth of brisket, level topline, good rear angulation, tail correct. Superbly handled, but so overweight it spoilt his balance on the move and really he rolled around the ring. So frustrating as he oozes potential.

3rd OsmansBournehouse Sirocco Over Marissolo JW

Limit Dog (6)

1st Darleys Severnsett Gold Sovereign. Refined light orange excelling in breed type combining quality and style. Loved his head and expression. Super reach of neck into clean shoulders. Level topline, good depth of brisket, with excellent spring of rib. No dog is perfect and would have liked more width and bend of stifle. However he was expertly handled and covered the ground with drive. Shown in beautiful condition he carried himself with ease and a touch of elegance that completed the picture. Pleased to award him the CC and BOB

2nd Montells Culverwell Super Scrumpy Very close up to 1 dark orange of slightly smaller and compact build, yet full of presence. Well chiselled head with intelligent expressive eyes. Super neck and shoulders, short coupled with excellent rear angulation giving him a balanced outline. If I say he reminded me of the old-fashioned type setters it is a compliment. Moved out with drive and style. Pleased to award him the RCC

3rd Whittington& Whittington’s Juldeane Line Of Duty (Ai)

Open Dog (2)

1st Vallances Rowanmyle Was A Skellum Shcex 6 year old blue, I still feel this is the age when our setters reach their best. Refined and elegant overall, would like a touch more work in his head to enhance his expression. Excellent reach of neck and level topline combined with balanced outline. In good coat and condition, Moved ok although I think the heat was affecting these 2 dogs.

2nd Collins & Collins Dyrham The Artful Dodger From Chilworth Blue Male with refined head and gentle expressive eyes giving a soft appealing expression. Neck could ideally be longer, shoulders are upright and he lacks depth of chest which loosens his front, however he has an elegant outline and in wonderful coat, movement affected by the ground and heat.

Sp Beg (3:2a)

1st Williams Wandsfell Keep Me Close 19 month orange boy of lighter frame, still very much in the stages of development. Head is rather plain at the moment with shoulders a little upright. However he has time to mature, gain substance and refine in outline. A little unschooled when moving so difficult to assess.

BITCHES

 Veteran (2)

1st Beasleys Wansleydale Amaretto at Latjeata 8 year old tri bitch, shown in wonderful condition a credit to her owner. Feminine head and soft expressive eyes. Presented a beautifully balanced outline, holding her topline on the move and showing lovely sweep of stifle. Moved with elegance and style covering the ground well. In full coat hard to believe she is a veteran. BV

2nd Seamans Mariglen Dusty Blonde SGWC 8 year old orange bitch of slightly smaller frame than 1. Full of quality and type. Possesses a feminine head with a delightful expression and a well balanced typical outline. Presented in excellent condition. Both these ladies displayed Breed type and ring presence.

MPB

1st Reids Diersett Moon Of The Skies 7 month orange still quite petite with a well-proportioned outline for her age. Head still developing, good reach of neck, front assembly will benefit from time. Short coupled with good rear angulation. Moved out as you would expect at this age, displays promise for the future.

Puppy Bitch (5:2a)

1st Forrest’s Elvistar Falling In Love Larger framed tri bitch mature in appearance, with a well defined head, dark expressive eye, good reach of neck. Slightly long in body but well angulated behind, she moved with ease showing good overall balance and promise. BPB

2nd Reids Diersett Moon Of The Skies (see MPB)

3rd Parrish’s Tawneymeade Moonflower

Junior Bitch (4)

1st Welburn’s Oshowa Just a Dream JW Outstanding blue, beautifully correct for her age. Feminine head, with the sweetest expression complimented by a long neck, into well laid shoulders. Good depth of chest, pleasing overall shape, short coupled yet entirely balanced in outline. Correct sweep of stifle ensures drive and precision on the move. Such a promising young bitch.

2nd Kerr’s Latjeata Angel Blue pretty dark blue bitch finer boned than 1. Attractive head, with mild expressive eyes and good length of neck, not as clean in shoulder as I would like. Firm topline with pleasing rear extension. Moved freely and covered the ground well in good coat and condition.

3rd Beasley’s Latjeata Cup Of Kindness

Yearling Bitch (5)

1st Welburn’s Oshowa Love To Dream JW Litter sister to the Junior winner and another stunning prospect. Lighter blue and overall less compact, she is more rangy and needs to fill her frame. Attractive head, finer in outline with warm expression. Excellent length of neck flowing into correct shoulders. Level topline with good depth of brisket. Well angulated rear ensuring strong drive and good tail action.

2nd Tompsett’s Radbrooks Walk Of Life Stockier dark blue bitch, correct eye shape and dark eye, head slightly plain. Overall, balanced outline. Good rear angulation. Still has that ‘puppyish’ look, maturity should improve her. However she moved beautifully covering the ground with style.

3rd McLoughlin’s Arabin Love Maybe

Novice Bitch (5:1a)

1st Collis & Passey’s Richecca Winter Melody I can only assume this very elegant tri bitch has hardly been shown otherwise she would not still be in Novice. A super example of her breeding. Oozes femininity, pretty head and expression good reach of neck, slightly upright in shoulder but good depth of chest, firm level topline. Good rear angulation in wonderful coat and condition, very ladylike in her movement just needed positive handling to get her to drive and extend.

2nd Forrests Elvistar Falling In Love

3rd Parrish’s Tawnymeade Moonflower

Post Graduate Bitch (7)

1st Deering’s Pettifox Of Rosetimber Wow what a class this was, the first three in this class I am sure could be worthy Show champions! However on the day this very impressive 4 year old orange bitch was the business. Almost workmanlike in appearance, lacking the elegance of some, yet almost flawless, in every detail. Her head neck and shoulders exemplify the standard, with depth of chest, firm top line, and superb rear angulation all showing hard fit condition. She may not be a glamourpuss, but once in motion she was mesmerizing, expertly handled she covered the ground effortlessly, head held high propelled by powerful drive from her hocks. A perfect picture of balance power and breed type. CC

2nd Bennet & Bennet Wansleydale As Busy As A Bee At Caprow JW This stunning dark tri is the younger, dare I say more glamorous, half-sister of 1. Beautiful head and expression although would like a darker eye, her quality is undeniable. Shares the same attributes as her sister. Superb front assembly and a completely balanced outline. In full coat and excellent hard condition. Not quite as fluid in movement, but presented a stunning picture of breed type with a touch of elegance……her day will surely come RCC

3rd Sykes Sharnyx Springtime At Daraquist

Limit Bitch (4)

1st Beasleys Wansleydale Mayflower At Latjeata Classy blue 4 year old bitch just coming to her best with regards to coat and maturity. Attractive head with gentle expression, good reach of neck, well laid shoulders, good depth of chest. Level topline, and good rear angulation. Looked a picture standing, just moved a little close behind which unbalanced her in profile.

2nd Welburns Oshowa Dream Come True Another very classy blue bitch and half- sister to the top winners, excelling again in breed type. Classic head with gentle expression clean in shoulder. Super return of upper arm, short back and well bent stifle showing good muscle. Today she lacked her clothing to complete the picture. However I am sure these 2 will swop places at future outings.

3rd Reids Hunterblue Mystique At Diersett

Open Bitch (5:1a)

1st Tucker’s Walshaw Save The Last Dance 6 year old bitch with a classic head and soft gentle expression. She has good reach of neck, with acceptable front angulation although lacking in depth of chest. Short coupled with a pleasing sweep of stifle. She would have benefitted from more coat to complete the picture, and today she was reluctant to venture out in the sun. However she was in fit condition and excelled in breed type.

2nd Montell’s Culverwell Sign Of The Angel Another blue of a different type to 1, larger all through. Very pleasing to go over with the sweetest of heads, but carrying more weight than ideal which affected her outline and balance. On the day the heat was against her, and she found it difficult to move to advantage.

3rd Darley Severnsett Dark Angel

Special Beginners (3)

1st Bennet & Bennet’s Wansleydale Busy As A Bee At Caprow BSB

2nd Brown & Brown’s Merleycopse Cinder Ella To Baystrider Petite blue bitch, overall ok with everything in proportion, moved soundly and without issue.

3rd Hoskins Scillysett One Vision
