It is always a great pleasure and very interesting to judge the breed that was my first love but no longer show, so rarely see them between judging appointments. Some of the dogs today were ones I have judged previously but most of them were new to me. There are two observations I would like to make. Firstly, the breed in the UK seems to be losing the characteristic wrinkled head which is so important in giving the breed that unique appearance. Secondly I saw quite a few flat splayed feet which is a real concern.
I had to make quite a few compromises, which is not unusual when judging.
On the plus side coats were mainly fine and of good colour, and most of the dogs had good leg length.
Some Basenjis, particularly some of the younger dogs, seemed quite distracted and lacking in concentration so movement was difficult to assess, but it had been quite a long wait to get in the ring and it was mid afternoon before we could start judging so they had very possibly become bored by then.
Thanks to exhibitors for allowing the student judge to go over the dogs, which is a good system for prospective judges to gain hands on experience.

Tri. One I have judged twice previously and placed well, today was absolutely his day. He sports a gleaming jet back coat, his outline and demeanour demand attention. Super length of leg, short back, scored in feet and pasterns with correct depth of chest and tuck up. His neck is proudly arched and leads to correct front angulation. Good head proportions although I would prefer a little more wrinkle. He moved beautifully with the correct long swinging stride and was correct on the out and back. I had no hesitation in awarding him the DCC.

Very feminine, exquisite head and expression, well set hooded ears, dark almond shaped eyes. Arched neck, correct and balanced angulation, short back, correct tailset, good feet and pasterns. Effortless movement in profile and true on the out and back. RCC.

Tri. Incredibly, 12 years and 5 months of age! I judged her as a puppy at a breed club show and gave her BPB and was delighted to see her again. She is feminine and elegant, beautifully proportioned with lovely balanced angulation, level topline, excellent tailset and shelf. Super feet and pasterns and in such great condition she is obviously well exercised. Her head has the desired expression although, as to be expected and totally forgivable at 12 years old, not so much wrinkle now. Effortless flowing stride in profile and true on the out and back, hard to believe she is of senior years. CC, BOB, BV.
Proud to see her represent the breed so well in the Group and Veteran Group.
2nd: 67 HOLLOWAY, Mrs Tatyana Aksaifleet Russki Rose

Tri. Another lovely girl I have liked previously and pleased that she has fulfilled the potential I saw in her as a puppy. She is feminine with a lovely expression, super jet black coat, good tailset, angulation and balance, moved with a flowing stride.
