Affenpinscher
Breed Results: Affenpinscher (Day 3)
I was looking for a small sturdy tough little dog, equally mischievous and comically serious with that unmistakable monkey-like expression. I was pleased that coats were ‘per breed standard ‘and not over groomed. I would not like to see this breed over glamourised as its correct coat is one of its essential features. Movement had appeared to have improved since I last judged but mouths had not, with a few wry mouths and poor dentition apparent.
I was pleased with the overall quality of the dogs exhibited and I found it relatively easy to judge to a type today.
Having studied the catalogue later it was fascinating to discover that an American imported bitch, Am Ch Edan Hill’s Dreamscape was the common ancestor of many of my winners, producing consistent quality down her lines. Interestingly she is registered as a red bitch, a colour currently not accepted in the UK or Europe.
From researching the breed’s early development, Affenpinschers varied in colour including grey, fawn, black, tan and red, as the first German stud books show. We can only surmise the reasons why the country of origin (Germany) breed club committee of many years ago, chose to remove these historic/original coat colours from their standard, perhaps on a personal whim or the fashion of the day as has happened in many other breeds.,
However, these original colours have not been lost to history as they are thriving in the USA. Their breed standard has always recognised the variety of colours in the breed which include black, gray, silver, red ( wheaten to dark orange), black and tan, and belge, and most importantly there appears no documented evidence of any additional health concerns connected to these colours.
