Darlington Dog Show Society Ltd

Breed: German Wirehaired Pointer

Good evening please find attached critique for German Wirehaired Pointer.

Darlington Championship Show is one of my favourite events. The venue is easily accessed and rings are well spaced.

My thanks go to the Committee for their invitation to judge this breed at CC level.

I had Colin Woodward to thank for stewarding in the ring keeping the exhibitors on their toes.

Many thanks to the exhibitors for a super entry both numerical and quality. The weather was perfect and a great ring size for the breed to move in.

My observations are that I understand the breed is a strong one however I did find some exhibits and in particular in some bitch classes with heavy bone. The standard calls for straight and lean not coarse. No one wants to see a weak bone however a heavy bone is just as undesirable.

Eyes varied in colour. Some heads were quite heavy in coat.

Body conditioning was good, however, by the end of judging my hands were very dirty. I know that they are working dogs but please remember presentation means a great deal.

Puppy dog

1.Drahtjager Aquarmarine Vom Feaghar. 6 mths. A smart pup. On the stack and move he is impressive. Coat and furnishings in good order. Front construction has ample bone. Round shape feet. Strong neck into well placed shoulders. Chest is deep elbows close. Topline held firm on the move where he showed his true action. Pleased to award him Best puppy in breed. Good luck with him for the future.

Junior dog

Beanalrem Gwyndu. 16 month. What an exorbitant youngster indeed. A handful of personality, something that I personally like to see in a youngster. On handling him his head is developed, slight stop, balanced with good colour to eyes. Ears set well. Correct mouth. Neck is strong leading into excellent set forequarters . Straight forelegs. Stands on well shaped feet. Topline is firm, ribs carried back, loin tucked up. Thighs are wide with turn to stifle. Harsh coat not too long. Once he settled he has a great stride and powers round the ring. So very pleased to award him CC and BOB.

Bacon De Los Malvares also 16 mth. Smaller in stature, has pleasing front construction and round feet. Harsh coat. Moved well out and round. Would like to see him carry more weight which should come with maturity.

Post grad dog

Ovetil Troseberry upstanding male. Head has desired slight stop and width showing quality. Deep chested with straight forelegs. Body is pleasing with firm topline. Ribbed back. Good width to thighs and stifles. On the move he showed his good action covering the ground.

Open bitch

Sh Ch Karlejay Gump Circle of life (AI). What a find in this great class of Champions. At first glance I liked her on the stack. She is not a flashy girl but going over her I found her qualities to be true to the breed. Length to height ratio is good. Chest deep. Every part of her construction flows into each other one cleanly. Head is sufficiently broad with slight stop. Good eye shape and colour. Not overdone in bone. Firm throughout body. Really liked the shape of her rear quarters. Tail set correctly. Moved effortlessly and true. So smooth. Pleased to award her CC.
