Midland counties Canine Society - Basset Hounds - 23rd October 2025

I would like to thank the Officers and Committee for inviting me to judge the basset hounds and for their superb hospitality. My gratitude also goes to my stewards who kept me in order. Finally I would also like to show my appreciation to all the exhibitors who entered and brought their lovely hounds for me to assess. I found no bad mouths and all coats were in a clean condition, I was also pleased that I did not observe any skin issues, and ears were clear. In view of the fact our breed is in category 3, it is important that hounds are well presented. I was a little disappointed to see that hind movement lacked drive on occasions. Having said that I was very pleased with my winners and delighted to note that my Best of Breed was shortlisted in the group.

1ST 169 - Bassluxe Just The Beginning (Mrs J & Mr K & Mrs K Hampton & Fell & Fell) 6 month old broken tri dog. Body quite mature for his age. Good head planes and dark eye. Leathers correctly set and nicely inward curling. Well balanced on the stack. Moved a little erratically but I’m sure he will settle as he matures.

1ST 173 - Goldenessence Deep Impact over Lanebern (Imp Prt) (Mrs K & Mr S G Lane) 11 month old dark tri dog. Pleasing head with good length of neck, ears fine and correctly set. Feet on the large size, would prefer slightly more length of rib. Has good ground clearance, and maintained level top line on the move.

1ST 153 - Malrich Moonwalk (Mrs N Beale) 15 month old red and white dog. Masculine head with a lovely calm expression, dark eyes and level head planes. Sound front and neat feet. Good length and depth of ribs. Muscular, well angulated hindquarters. Moved with drive, and good tail carriage.

2ND 157 - Malrich Shaken Not Stirred (Mr M & Mrs D Ellrich) 17 month old dark tri dog. Of smaller frame than 1. A smart well balanced hound. Correctly domed head, ears set just below eye-line and of good texture. Good reach of neck and well rounded ribs. Moved well coming and going.

1ST 170 - Clanwillow Fire and Ice JW (Mrs S B & Mr K R Jones) 21 month old dark tri dog. Dark head with deep flews. Good reach of neck and level top line. Very smart on the move.

2ND 176 - Harvidene Love Potion (Dr R K Roden) 23 month old broken tri dog. Correct head plains, lovely dark eyes and correct ear set. Level top line and correct tail set. A little sluggish on the move, maybe a small loss of weight would improve this.

1ST 162 - Dizandra Carpe Noctem (Miss A Gambling) 2 year old broken tri dog. Pleasing head and neck. Sound front and well developed sternum. Level topline, good rib length and correct bend of stifle. Would like to see him with a little more body.

1ST 177 - Ch Switherland Bazooka (Ms M Rodgers) 2yr old tri dog. I have admired him from the ringside and he did not disappoint today. Super masculine head, lovely reach of neck and sound forequarters. Good spring and length of ribs. Muscular hindquarters. Moved soundly with drive and good reach, maintaining a level top line. I was pleased to award him the CC and Best of Breed.

2ND 181 - Ch Reveros Power of Love (Mrs R & Mr L Sutton) 20 month old red and white dog. Very clean outline. Correct head planes and dark eyes. Elegant neck, ribs well sprung and of good length. Has great ring presence and moved effortlessly showing himself off. I was pleased to award him Res CC.

1ST 172 - Clanwillow The Jazz Singer (Ms Sl Land) 12 month old tri dog. Pleasing masculine head with dark eyes and correct ear set and texture. Balanced outline, self assured on the move. I was pleased to award him Best Special Beginner.

1ST 150 - Lauralee Magic Image (Miss L Armstrong) 6 month old red and white girl. Lovely feminine head and dark, tight eyes. Super front construction and neat feet. Still quite a baby, good depth and length of ribs. Correct tail set. Whilst movement a little erratic she was sound going and coming. Pleased to award her best puppy.

2ND 161 - Lockolea Sweet Like Honey (Mrs K & Ms C Freudenreich) 8 month old dark tri girl. Feminine throughout. Correct head planes and lovely dark eyes. Good reach of neck and body length. Clean outline, moved confidently.

1ST 151 - Lauralee Mystical Magic (Miss L Armstrong) Another 6 month old red and white girl, litter sister to the minor puppy winner. Of smaller stature, but similar sound front construction. Dark eyes and elegant neck. Good ribs and sound hindquarters. Movement again a little erratic but sound.

2ND 167 - Astra Vgrunsven at Bassluxe (Imp Nld) (Mrs J Hampton) 11month old red and white girl. A larger type, but feminine throughout. Sweet head, dark eyes and nicely inward curling ears.Good length of ribs and level topline. Confident mover.

1ST 168 - Your Faith Van Grunsven at Bassluxe (Imp Nld) (Mrs J Hampton)18 month old dark broken tri girl. Feminine head and prominent occipital bone, a little short in the neck. She has a deep keel and skirt lower to ground, but with sufficient clearance. Moved well but needs a little more rear drive.

1ST 148 - Roamanbay Reddy to Rock (Mr Archer) 22 month old red blanket girl.Lovely head, dark well shaped eyes and feminine expression. Elegant reach of neck, well rounded ribs and well laid back shoulders. Good ground clearance and strong hindquarters. Presented a very pleasing outline, on the stack and moved effortlessly round the ring.

2ND 164 - Short Legs Reijvi Light Up The Sky at Bassoto (Imp Nld) (Mr S Gray) 2.5 year old lemon and white girl. Of smaller type and frame than 1. I liked her head and calm expression. Good body length, and level topline. Moved well going and coming.

1ST 147 - Roamanbay Rebellious Flame (Mr Archer) 4 year old red and white girl. Beautiful shape, not overdone in any department. Pleasing head, good depth of flews and correct lozenge shaped eyes. Well laid back shoulders, and tight elbows. Good length of ribs which were well sprung. Movement evidenced good reach of stride in both fore and hindquarters. I was pleased to award her the CC.

2ND 158 - Ch Switherland Albazar (Mr P Freer) 5 year old black blanket tri girl. Another super bitch. Correct head planes, and dark eyes. Beautiful front construction and tight elbows. Well balanced outline. Moved well, I just preferred the hind action of 1. I was pleased to award her Res CC.
