Breed: King Charles Spaniel

King Charles Spaniels

Living decades with Cavaliers, I am always reminded when I judge Charlies that they are different in many ways. Smarter for sure….Cavaliers love to please and reap the rewards…Charlies do everything on their own terms and still reap the rewards. That is what makes them so unpredictable and yet so appealing. Tricolours dominated the entry with only a sprinkling of Blenheims and no Wholecolours.

A couple of things I found and hope they do not continue to take hold. So many resembled Cavaliers in their body construction. The King Charles Standard calls for “compact and cobby, chest wide and deep”. There were quite a number who did not possess these features and were longer bodied.

The other key feature is the distinctive dome….there were several lacking correct ear placement that contributes to the roundness of skull and thereby leant towards a flatter skull.

It is the uniqueness of their breed traits that set Charlies apart. I hope breeders continue to strive to retain these special characteristics.

1st: LOVEL’S Lovetrac Kasper

6 month tricolour to start off the day. Handsome head and a lovely size with plenty of bone and substance and well sprung ribs. Decent neck and shoulders. Eyes dark and round set in a head that was typical with ears low set, sufficient dome and squared off muzzle. Tidy lip finish. Tan was rich. He had good table manners and ring presence and despite being so young, coped surprisingly well with the uneven ring. No nerves and showed happily. His equally as nice litter sister appeared in a later class.

1st: SMITH’S Chacombe Hendrix At Justacharma

Nice natured tricolour with lots of style. True to type head properties with kind, dark eyes and broad skull. Quite a wide white blaze but this did not detract. Nice to see a dome twinned with correct ear positioning. Free moving and his hind action impressed and was complimented with a tidy front. Firm topline. Silky coat. At 10 months should continue to do well. BEST PUPPY DOG

Lovely moving Tricolour who strode out with reach and drive. Scored for neck and shoulders but would like more stockiness. Big dark eyes, deep stop, long low set ears. A happy boy whose coat presentation was striking.

1st: BOWLES-ROBINSON’S Baldragon One Time Only NAF TAF

This tricolour boy has so much to like and his true blue breed type and construction saw him win the DOG CC even though he did not give his all. Have no doubt he would have an easy route to the top if he gains confidence and capitalises on his assets. All male with handsome head with open face features, good width to skull and sufficient dome. Eyes round, dark and big. Loved his compactness and sturdy build. Well placed nose. Gave me fleeting glimpses of his potential but when he did, he impressed.

2nd: RIGNALL’S Rignolla Baby Reindeer

Amply coated tricolour with good distribution of markings. Pleasing in rise of skull with good stop and turn up. Presented a lovely outline going round with nice tail carriage and his out and back satisfied. A happy boy who was longer in back than winner.

2nd: Baldragon Pardon My French.

Heavier marked tricolour who was not so fluent in movement as winner. Good type overall displaying typical headpiece with broad, domed skull and large nostrils. Good sized eyes, round and mid brown in colour. Liked his substance. Excellent coat properties.

1st: AUSTIN’S Baldragon Blinkin Hell

Did not always do himself justice standing but pulls together on the move. Scored for attractive head piece with plenty of dome and ears set low. Complimentary tri coat markings and soft silky texture. Decent mover with front and rear angulation matching to allow a free easy gait. Good substance and cobbier than 2nd.

2nd: SCHEMEL & NEMETH’S Bentwood Angelico Primo

5 year old mature Blenheim with handsome head and soft, yet masculine outlook. Plenty of substance and well coated. A size up from 1 whose compact shape appealed more. Had his own agenda and not making the most of himself on the move.

Fizzy tricolour who stood alone and went on to win the DOG RCC. Appealed for size, coat properties and balanced outline. Hands on he felt good. His biddable personality allowed me to appreciate his qualities. Decent neck, shoulders and angles. Handsome exhibit with kind generous eyes, rich tan points and decent movement. Can lose his topline somewhat but think it was more down to his flamboyance than construction.

1st: BAKER’S Cofton Wish Upon A Star

8 year old tricolour. Very feminine and a super size with the prettiest of face features. Dark eyes set in a typically domed head with good nose placement and rich tan in all the appropriate places. Scored for short back with well sprung ribs giving the cobby look I was seeking. Coat was soft and silky and added the finishing touch. BEST VETERAN

1st: LOVEL’S Lovetrac Diwall.

Lovely six month tricolour baby. Full of confidence and did all that was asked. Small, compact, and solidly built with good ribbing. A lovely head with dome and fetching face features. Shining eyes and animated expression. Neck, shoulders and rear angulation all satisfied. Needs to tighten in front. A repeat of an earlier successful twinning and an exciting prospect.

2nd: RUTHERFORD’S Rignolla Devon Dreamer With Potbelli.

Small showy Blenheim with good make and shape. Pleasing girly head with agreeable dome and nose placement. Large dark eyes with gentle expression. Easy on the eye with rich chestnut and white markings and stepped out with self assurance holding a level topline. Compliant personality.

1st: BOWLES-ROBINSON’S Baldragon Remember Me

Very sweet faced tricolour of the highest order. Only 10 months old and full of her own importance yet she manages to display this in a quiet confident manner. Has great presence and is lovely to go over. Text book head with all the ingredients required. Good substance with ribs and adequate bone befitting her frame. Stands willingly showing off a balanced outline and her movement is free and effortless making it look easy. Lovely to judge. A great asset to the breed. BEST PUPPY IN BREED, BITCH CC and BOB

2nd: NORDIN’S Cavamirs Milima.

Beautifully broken tricolour who was two months older than winner but was not so developed in body and less accomplished on the move to and fro. Sweet head with dome and long ears that framed a feminine face. A balanced outline with level topline held firm on the go around. Maturity will give her the body and finish she lacks at present

Happy 16 month tricolour who was not in her best coat but what she had was well broken and soft to the touch. Pleasing in head with amiable expression and large dark eyes. Needs maturity and more muscle tone and strength behind.

1st: LOVEL’S Lovetrac Vienna

Only a baby of six months who was rather reluctant to show and wanted to do it her way. She moved with irregular bursts of activity. Once she learns the art of making the most of herself could do well. The last of three puppies shown today who all came from the same litter. Nice to have such quality. Fairly advanced in body development. Chest wide and deep with well rounded rib cage. Felt good on close inspection with a kind expression and nice dome.

Sweet natured tricolour with good dome and large, dark round eyes. Neat body shape just a tad heavy on the shoulders. Decent mover. Lovely breed type from this exhibitor.

2nd: AUSTIN’S Baldragon Gots Hattitude

Nicely marked tricolour with round, dark eyes set in aa attractive albeit homely face. Showed herself off and looked good in outline circling the ring and was happy to go through her paces. Just preferred size and refinement of winner

1st: LOVEL’S Ch Lovetrac Kamilla

Can appreciate why this two year old well marked tricolour holds a title and it was a close decision in the bitch challenge. Not showing with the flourish of the CC winner but a very worthy BITCH RCC. Toy spaniel stamped all over her. Lovely size with the prettiest of heads and she is well made. Cobby body with good substance and neck shoulders and topline blend seamlessly. Sound mover. Full of the quality that makes this breed so special.

2nd: NORDIN’S DK Ch Norsk Ch SU Ch Int Ch Fin Cavamirs Darjeelin

5 years old Blenheim with good attitude and personality. Ultra feminine with good eyes. Super neck and shoulders. Rangier than winner and sadly her nose pigment let her down today.
