Cavalier King Charles Spaniels
Cavaliers came into my life over 50 years ago and made my life complete. To judge a breed that means so much to me is very special.
I was thrilled that so many made the trip to Ingliston and fully appreciate that distance and cost can be prohibitive. My goal was to find the ones closest to the Breed standard but I believe all Cavaliers bring us joy no matter their degree in adherence to the breed standard. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to judge your dogs.
When you only get a short time to impress the judge it is vital that your dog behaves. Some became dervishes for food on the table making it nigh impossible to go over them. To walk in a controlled fashion is another must and many need to go back to the drawing board for this basic requirement. You may spoil your dog’s chances otherwise.
I hope long backs and short legs don’t become the norm. A toy spaniel does not equal dwarf and there needs to be balance between height and length. There were several rolling top lines and hope they were caused simply by being overweight or lack of muscle tone and not structural.

1 Spall & Clark’s Llapsttam Luther Vandross
The day started well with this stylish 9 months Ruby. Well schooled and stood happily displaying a smart outline. Neck, shoulders and topline were seamless with no rough edges …all pieces fitted together smoothly. Richly coloured coat, dark eyes, black pigment. Head wise this colour can be slow to develop and with maturity will come the filling to give added softness to his expression. It’s still cooking. Especially taken with his easy stride around the ring showing reach and drive with excellent tail carriage. Have seen him several times from outside the ring and it was good to get my hands on him. He didn’t disappoint.
2 Gilbert’s Ouzlewell's Harry Potter
An understated Blenheim puppy of 7 months still carrying a lot of puppy fluff so looked babyish. Good going around. Showed promise and foundations were sound. Appealed for size, good construction and a lovely face full of Cavalier charm. I hope he gets out to more shows.

1 Levy and Sedgwick’s Pascavale Banksy
There have been lots of splendid typey Cavaliers bearing this affix. This Blenheim was no exception. Only 11 months old but had the key points on my list of must-haves. I wrote “love him” twice in my notes….shows how much he impressed. Gentle faced with large, dark eyes. Long ears well feathered. Coat was silky and straight covering a well put together body. Willingly stood showing his balanced outline. Enviable neck, shoulders, top line and tail set. One of the soundest movers here today and lovely to watch with a top line and tail set that could rival our “Billy Elliot’s”. Only young but his quality and style were undeniable. CC was his and also Best Puppy in Breed
2 Callaghan & Todd’s Callyspride Cedric
10 month Blenheim with a striking head piece that will always get him noticed. Expression is so nice with dark eyes, flat skull and shallow stop. Head markings were complimentary looking hand painted. Size spot on. Richly coloured coat added to his appeal. Did not put his decent construction to good use on the move. Not the rear drive of winner. Cavaliers should be gay and he was … but turned into a wild child in the up, down and around and gave his handler a hard time. Back to school.
J 7 (2 ) This class took a bit of sorting out. The first 3 could all have won and it was swings and roundabouts. They had different areas of strength.
1 Fox-Shone’s Pamedna The Power of Love.
A cracking Blenheim with a tendency to follow his own instincts rather than his handler’s coaching. Loved his size, small with medium bone. A touch smaller than 2 and 3. Gentle headed with lovely face features. Soft, large eyes that added kindness to his expression. Jet black nose pigment. Long leathers. Attractively marked coat soft to the touch. Agreeable neck shoulders and topline and moved accurately when he tried. Boot camp needed as his competitors have their performances finely tuned so he needs to up his game. Rather feral at present, but has every chance of a good future if he decides to take it.
2 Rix’s Ricksbury Elite
A full bodied Blenheim who was lovely to go over with good substance. Stallion like. Certainly not a couch potato with good muscle tone. From neck to tail the bits all fit. Coat condition was A1 with markings that were classic. Free moving with excellent rear movement. Probably one of the best going away. Well turned stifles and short hocks drove him forward. Handsome and was far better trained than 1 just rangier and winner’s eyes and expression had the edge. Will always be there or thereabouts.

1 Lovel’s Lovetrac Banksy
Another Blenheim Banksy! His owner brought him into the class and he behaved beautifully. A super toy sized dog of 18 months with a sweet face and melting expression. Neatly made with good body proportions. Short backed and carried a quality coat just starting to change. Good deportment and he was happy to show off his sound construction and clean outline. In the challenge he came back in with a handler that was unknown to him and for a short time he was unruly and refused to cooperate and even managed to unsettle the dogs in close vicinity. Fortunately his owner, who almost blew his chances, dashed back just in time, took over and restored order. I was happy to award him the RCC.
2 Rathbone & Pal’s Brymarden Flawless Blush
Both owner and dog are new to shows and have only been active in the last 6 months. A quality Blenheim, quite the pin up, who had instant impact with a rich chestnut coat and text book markings. Good for size. Balanced outline and moved fluently. Mid brown eyes set in a head and expression that appealed just pipped at the post by the shorter back and depth of pigment of winner. On future outings is sure to collect admirers.

1 Mackenzie’s Carsan Hot An Tasty JW
Striking Blenheim with lots of soft, silky coat. Good depth of chestnut and pearly white. Generous masculine head with high set feathered ears and appealing expression in dark, round eyes. Nose a tad off. Smooth sweep from neck, through shoulders and top-line to tail. Co ordinated mover and went well on the go around showing good angles front and rear. A size up from my ideal but had appeal.
2 Hamilton & Hogg’s Kringleholme Continental
Well marked Blenheim with likeable qualities. A little distracted at first but pulled himself together and settled. Not with his usual handler. Gentle open face and on table examination he measured up well. Attractively arranged chestnut markings but not the exceptional richness of winner. In spite of handler’s trepidation they put on a good show and moved in a controlled accurate fashion. Decent dog with above average qualities.

1 Lovel’s Juzandia Keverne at Lovetrac
This exhibitor has a strong team of Blenheims at present and all were in lovely condition. Gentle headed boy with wonderful breed type. Lovely face features. Big, round eyes, black nose, super ear set. Small with good bone to match his frame. Coat, and there was plenty of it, gleamed. Ideal body length with good leg height. Balanced and moved fluently with drive. Sweet natured boy who gave his all. Just turned 2.
2 Levy & Sedgwick’s Pascavale Tyson
Neat little tricolour with all the glamour in head that you would wish for. The softest liquid expression so hard to resist. Round dark eyes, long ears, flat skull, correct length of muzzle. Complimentary face markings and the tan points were vibrant. Quality tricolour coat, silky and shone with well being. He moved around the ring in a collected fashion. Not a cocky dog just quietly confident. Going away winner was stronger. Thrilled to see he had success later in the day and won his crown. Making up a tricolour is not easy, but so fulfilling.

1 Spall & Clark’s Ch Llapsttam's Heavenly Scent
Two year old Ruby. Generous masculine head with a hint of sweetness that makes an ordinary head special. When alert, with his ears fanned forward, had a quizzical look that appealed. Dark eyes, round and large and a black nose that contrasted well against his rich red colouring. Stayed in first gear for a bit then decided to turn it on and motored around the ring with style showing off his neck, good front and rear angles and firm top line with correctly carried tail. Good footfall. Splendid turn out and his sleek coat was soft to the touch. A bit long cast but he is balanced and carried himself well.
2 Chapman & Ireland’s Ch Ellemich American Express
A well known Blenheim whose success story has been well recorded and having judged him in the Group at the end of last year I would simply like to add to his accolades and say that for me he excelled in unsinkable personality, super showmanship and stunning outline and tail carriage going around the ring. Presented in flat, silky coat and has a sweet face and great eyes. Close up to 1 who just went that bit better on the out and back.

Age is just a number and these seniors seemed happy to get to showcase their abilities.
1 Gilbert’s Bellflows The Gentleman JW
11 year old Blenheim with melting expression. Age does not diminish breed type and this old boy had it in spades. Text book eyes, large, dark, round and gentle. I liked his size and his personality. He wagged when he saw me. A few extra pounds took the edge off his outline but his compactness appealed and he happily circled around the ring. It was a case of “heads you win”.
2 Hamilton & Hogg’s Kilbarchan's Moonwalker VW
Nice looking Blenheim shown in peak condition. Excellent coat properties, soft and plentiful. Long feathered ears framed an attractive face but sadly was closing one eye. Good command of the ring and made an impression on the move. Strode out well and showed with enthusiasm. Bigger than winner. 9 years old and in this form will continue to get recognition in Veteran.

1 Taylor’s Revdvicki Heavenly Chance
3 year old Tricolour. The total package appealed with lots to appreciate. Neat little dog with dark eyes. Spot on for size. Complimentary coat markings made him easy on the eye with the black and white distributed to advantage and tan that was rich. Steady on the move presenting a satisfactory outline. Nothing extreme and no one point outshone another. Best Sp Beginners
2 Linton’s Thekop's Si Sinor
Who’s a naughty boy! Black and Tan not long out of Puppy and played up. Scored in head with round dark eyes that gave a gentle expression. Coat great to the touch. Soft and silky. Tidy body shape and if he decided to oblige, could do well.

1 Rabymar Prince William at Alsidewood
Black/Tan youngster of 13 months. GC training and even temperament paid off. Friendly, easy to assess on the table and went through his routine willingly. Adhered to the standard as far as size, ample bone, good colour scheme of rich tan and raven black. Dark eyes. Decent mover. In 3 classes today. Not a showstopper but his demeanour was all Cavalier.
2 Rabymar New York
Flashy Ruby coming up 3 whose vibrant rich, red coat gleamed. Full marks for his condition as this takes more than a quick wash and brush up the night before a show. Had good rapport with his owner. All male headpiece with flat skull, mellow eyes and ears well set. Excellent muscle tone. Rangier than 1 and deeper in stop. Full of himself.

MP 8 (2 )
1 Chapman & Ireland’s Kiss Kiss Du Chateau Noblesse at Ellemich (Imp Deu)
Won with a bit to spare. Upmarket Blenheim of super breed type. Only 7 months old but advanced in body and furnishings so had the advantage over the babyish puppies. Head is classic with soft dark eyes, long ears, flat skull, shallow stop and correct fore face. Straight, quality chestnut and white coat with enough length to add glamour. Best outline. A bit soft and needs to tighten all through to advantage but will be heard of many times.
2 Spiers’ Caramoone Spring Breeze
Pretty Blenheim baby enjoying the outing. Excellent depth of pigment in eyes and nose. Shaggy coat at present until her new sleek coat emerges. Pocket size and at a tender 7 months has time to come up on leg. Carried herself well on the move.

Tempting Blenheim almost finished in the puppy classes. Fair of face with lovely head type. Dark gentle eyes, high set ears. No extremes in stop or skull. Just soft moulding. Good reach of neck and built on elegant lines. Easy unrestricted movement that endorsed her good construction and went around with style keeping her head up. Carried a lightly marked coat that was straight and silky. Very glam, very nice. Best Puppy Bitch and RCC
2 Spall & Clark’s Llapsttam Four Tea Love
10 months petite Black and Tan. Open faced with sweet expression coming from lovely eyes. Big, dark and round. Tapered muzzle. Very feminine in outlook. Worked hard in the class just not so fluent on the move as winner. Owner should have fun with this one.

J 3 (1) Our ring was in a cold, noisy section of the hall and a few were unsettled. Only 2 in this class. Both Black and Tans, just over a year old, and neither were totally comfortable.
1 Sim’s Bonitos Companeros Zamboa Queen at Tayhaar (Imp Deu)
Nice looking with an attractive feminine head. Ears set high and framed a very girly face with dark expressive eyes. Complimentary tan on face. Felt good to go over. Good ribs. She moved willingly but her tail was down. Lots of coat.
2 Kilcoyne’s Granasil Bird in The Hand
Placings could have been different but sadly she wasn’t happy and I’ll at ease with her surroundings and no amount of coaxing helped. Attractive head with big, dark eyes, high set ears and plenty of fill. Great body shape and very balanced in outline. Silky, shiny, raven black coat with deep tan markings and face points. Have seen her go much better but today she didn’t want to be there.

1 Lovel’s Lovetrac Angelica
Feminine Blenheim that appealed for size, smart markings and shape. Attractive girly face with dark eyes and gentle outlook. Good pigment. Short backed with decent neck and shoulders and circled the ring in a free easy action to win the class. Came back into the challenge a bit sluggish and not going as well.
2 Corner’s Delaby Miss Daisy
Blenheim that scored well in most respects but was naughty and failed to give her best. Gentle face with soft eyes. Good for size with moderate bone. A bit portly and did not want to cooperate moving. I liked her but her wilful temperament worked against her.

Blenheim who appealed for size, coat colour and type. A lovely head with dark expressive eyes. Ear set high framed a pretty face. Well constructed with front and rear angulations matching. Happy girl who around the ring showing decent outline. Needs more furnishings.
2 Smith’s Aranel Binky
Have never seen a plain headed Aranel. They produce pretty, typey Cavaliers of the correct size with terrific coats. Sweet petite Blenheim with good eyes and shown in wonderful condition. Tidy make and shape. Went well with level topline and correct tail carriage. Pegged back today by dropping her ears.

1 Tremain’s Bonitos Companeros First Class (Imp Deu) 4 years
A fantastic day for this four year old Blenheim winning her 1st CC and subsequently Best of Breed. I liked her at first glance and after the table she continued to impress right to the end of judging. Pretty outlook with eyes, ears, stop, muzzle length all satisfied. A handy size, well coated and soundly made. Her coat condition and muscle tone were excellent and she moved around the ring with confidence and accuracy holding a splendid topline and nicely carried tail. Every dog has its day and this was hers. Not overly assertive but works well with her owner to show her self assurance. She looked exceptionally good and pulled out all the stops in her class, in the challenge and Best of Breed. A popular winner and the ringside showed their approval.
2 Spall & Clark’s Llapsttam's Eunice JW
3 year old Black/Tan. Yummy expression. Many wholecolours can be overly headed with heavy skulls and deep stops. Not this girl. No extremes. Her face would look right in any colour. Gentle, large, dark eyes, spaced well apart. Precise mover and her coat shone. Came back in to challenge for RCC. A tad more leg would give added elegance.

1 Waters’ Sweetbriar La Dee Da JW
3 years old Blenheim with the prettiest head and expression. Although she didn’t have the coat finish or “pick me” attitude of 2 her outline and soft facial curves and great eyes put her first. Loved her neck, shoulders, topline, croup and rear angulation that allowed freedom of movement. Tight tucked in elbows coming towards me. Coat not at its best and hopefully can re emerge soon with her new clothes. Not demonstrative but does all that is asked. Good bitch
2 Robb,Chapman & Ireland’s Ch Ellemich Good Trouble with Gleniren
The immaculate presentation and ring presence of this little Blenheim and owner are hard to get past. They are so in tune. She is a lovely size with good bone and her ratio of height to length is good. Attractive face with long ears and dark eyes. Swept around the ring with enthusiasm and her outline was crisp. Coat was plentiful and the condition was admirable. Rich chestnut on pearly white background distributed evenly.

Some things get better with age. Miss Elsie certainly has. It’s like she had waited for this moment to shine at her brightest. Now at 7 and a half she was effervescent and her exhuberant personality was heart warming. Small, well marked, lovely expression, ultra feminine, good teeth, well made and in super coat. Wind her up and watch her go. Her tail never stopped. Adorable. Beat Veteran in Breed
2 Gow’s Grajenco Macchiato at Lyncraeg
Ruby a couple of years older than 1 with a zest for showing. Fit and a free mover. Dark eyes and long ears framed a gentle face. Good dentition. A bit deep in stop. Super firm topline on the move and her coat was plentiful and felt good to touch. In tune with her handler and they made a good partnership.

Delicious expression on this gentle faced tricolour. She must be hard to refuse. Dreamy dark eyes, flat skull and long feathered ears. Lovely size. Balanced outline and stood in a firm four square stance. No problems on the move covering the ground well. Her waistline needed defining and needs to lose a couple of pounds possibly left over from maternity duties. Four years old.

Another pretty Blenheim with a constantly wagging tail. Chestnut this rich is rarely seen these days and took me back to yesteryear and the Pargeter dogs. Not the accomplished movement of winner and more neck would benefit her outline.
