Border Union Agricultural Society
Many thanks to Border Union for my invitation to judge at the Society’s Golden Anniversary show. I was a replacement judge. I hope the original judge is well. Thank you to my efficient stewards. I enjoyed the day. Entry was small, with some high-quality exhibits. Thank you to all those who entered and made the long journey. Movement is still not as sound as it should be for a breed that needs to move as its original purpose. Plenty of short upper arms here today with some over-angulated rears, which breeders need to be more selective against. Some fine in bone too. Temperaments were good overall. Coats were good, with excellent featherings.

JD (1) 1. Short’s Arianrhod Aavevalo to Glenchess (ai). Quality male who out-moved all other males here today, despite his youthful age. Beautiful head and expression. Well-balanced, broad skull without being overdone. Broad muzzle, neatest of ears, well-set and furry, with a dark oval eye, giving him the sweetest expression. Well balanced in outline, correct front assembly with good layback of shoulder and correct length of upper arm. Balanced in the rear with a moderate turn of stifle and well let down in pastern. Well ribbed up with short, strong loin. Neat, oval feet, well-coated. Good tailset. Harsh coat well presented. Still needs to develop in the forechest and brisket, and this is evident in his movement when coming towards. Moved well in profile with a well-balanced, effortless gait, covering the ground with desired reach and drive, maintaining his topline well on the move at all times. DCC.

LD (4) 1. Short’s Arianrhod Aavevalo to Glenchess (ai). See JD. 2. Meikle & Henderson’s Elbereth Etiainen at Lintukoto. Presents a good outline, strong and compact, standing four square. Strong in head, well-defined stop and broad, short muzzle, preferred the head and expression of the winner. Lovely dark oval eye. Would prefer smaller ears. Moderate reach of neck, into well-laid shoulder, not the upper arm of 1. Strong bone, neat oval feet. Needs to develop through forechest and brisket. Well ribbed up, needs to broaden through back which should come with maturity. Well angulated in rear, good tail set. In excellent coat, very harsh, legs well furnished. Well-presented and schooled. Moved out with a balanced stride in profile, not quite the reach or drive of the winner. Narrow coming and going. RCC. 3. Critchlow & Francis-Christie & Francis-Christie’s Pavoskas Forest JW. Res. French’s Elbereth Teemu Pukki (ai).

PB (1) 1. Fowler’s Whinfoss Kesanlehvisto at Lapinruska (ai). Smaller bitch, quite fine throughout. Good skull to muzzle proportions, needs to broaden nice eye and ear, giving a soft expression. GB (4) 1. Stewart’s Elbereth Talventarina. Strong bitch with excellent height to length proportions. Strong head would prefer a slightly darker eye to be nit-picky. Well placed tipped ears, which enhanced her soft expression. Excellent front assembly, slightly exaggerated in rear, well let down in hock. Well ribbed up with good spring of rib. Good tail set. Moved out well in all directions, maintaining level topline. Presented in harsh coat. 2. Critchlow’s Pavoskas Iloilme. Not yet fully mature. Finer in bone than 1 with little coat today. Very feminine. Presents a good outline, moderate angulation front and rear. Head handles well with correct skull to muzzle proportions, lovely eye, medium sized ears, well placed, giving a soft, feminine expression. Moderate length to neck into good layback of shoulder, and correct return of upper arm. Well ribbed up. Short, strong loin. Good tail set. Moved out well with desired reach and drive. 3. Fowler’s Tabanyaruu Unelma Kukinta at Lapinruska. Res. Clark’s Aateli Koira Vakker Yuna at Lumenico (Imp Fra).
PGB (4) 1. Stewart’s Elbereth Talventarina. See GB. 2. Proctor’s Alkantara Talvi Hamara with Cathbri. Larger bitch , full of energy. Good head proportions, broad through muzzle. Oval eye, colour harmonizing with coat, well set ears. Appears long through the body, but she is well ribbed up with a short, strong loin. LB (3) These 3 bitches all covered the ground with a brisk, effortless gait in profile. 1. Stanley’s Ansalfrose Wivi JW. Smaller bitch, scored in outline over 2. Very pretty head and expression. Broad skull and good width to muzzle, dark oval eye and ears set well apart. Moderate bone, neat oval feet. Developing well through forechest and brisket. Strong in back, moderate spring of rib, short loin. Harsh coat well presented. Moved out well in all directions. 2. Critchlow & Rudd’s Pavoskas Hiili Helmi. Pretty head that handles well. Strong through skull, broad with a slightly rounded forehead, stop clearly defined. Moderate length of neck. Good angulations front and rear. Well let down in hock. Well ribbed up with moderate spring of rib. Enough bone. Free mover with a well-balanced stride, good reach and drive, her effortless gait is a pleasure to watch. Just would like a touch more length to leg. 3. Meikle & Henderson’s Lintukoto Ilmiomainen (ai).
OB (4,1) 1. Jackson’s Ch Elbereth Unisieppari JW. Strong bitch throughout. Strong in bone. Strong in head with well-defined stop, dark, oval eye, medium ears which could be wider set. Good forechest, still needs to drop in brisket. Lovely to handle through body, with moderate spring of rib, broad through back, short, strong loin. Would prefer slightly more moderate turn of stifle, but this does not handicap her movement in profile, moving out with medium stride. In excellent, harsh coat, legs well furnished. RCC.
2. Birkbeck & Enderby’s Pavoskas Flora. Beautiful, feminine head and expression. Good body proportions throughout, with moderate angulations front and rear. Not as strong in bone as 1. Moved out well with moderate reach and drive. Not in full coat today and a little unhappy being gone over. 3. Critchlow’s Pavoskas Fuchsia.
VB (4) A class of quality ladies. 1. Moore’s Ch Morval Salainen Haave JW. A quality bitch who I have judged as a youngster. Thrilled to see that she still ‘has it’. Excels in profile, everything is where it should be, with no exaggeration. Beautiful head and expression, broad throughout with dark, oval eye and well-placed ears, giving a soft, feminine expression. Strong through body, well ribbed up with short, strong loin and good tailset. In good body condition, with harsh coat and lovely leg feathering. Moved out well in all directions with a brisk, effortless gait, holding her topline well. Delighted to award her BCC, BOB and BV. 2. Critchlow’s Glenchess Kiuru over Pavoskas. Close up to 1 and another bitch I have judged previously. Just felt she wasn’t moving as well today as I know she can. Lovely in outline. Broad, yet feminine head, oval eye, matching coat colour perfectly, giving a soft, feminine expression. Well-balanced front and rear angulations, well-defined forechest and deep brisket. Strong in bone, legs well furnished. Strong in back, with strong loin, finished with a harsh coat. She moved out well, not quite the drive of 1 today, straight coming and going, presenting a balanced outline at all times. 3. Stanley’s Ansalfrose Jojanna. Res. Critchlow & Francis-Christie & Francis-Christie’s Pavoskas Cancan.
