Golden retriever dogs

Judge Mrs Maria Fosdike (Meiepere)

Thank you to the club for the kind invitation to judge at your fantastic show and for the warmest welcome. Thanks also to my two stewards for looking after me so well, ensuring I was able to take breaks as I pregnantly waddled through the day. I was delighted with my lovely entry and so grateful to all the exhibitors for allowing me to judge their lovely boys.

Although not quite the same depth of quality that I saw in bitches earlier this year, I was spoilt for choice in a number of classes. Open and Limit in the higher classes and Junior and Yearling in the lower ones stood out in particular.

I found temperaments to be excellent overall and the majority of dogs were presented in lovely condition carrying the correct amount of weight. It was also great to see almost no high tails. I did spot a small number of untidy bites and a fair few had round eyes. In general, front assemblies could have been better which resulted in a number of dogs with untidy front movement.

My co-judge Mrs Tina Angrell and I were in full agreement for all awards, with the bitch Thornywait Nemesis going BIS, dog Sandti Back Of The Net RBIS, dog puppy Zenevieva Mad As I Am For Whistler BPIS, veteran bitch Quakerhall Victory Jubilee taking BVIS and baby bitch Strathlon Angel Eyes was Best Baby.

A perfect outline with balanced angulation, excellent proportions and length of leg. He moved just as his construction would suggest, effortless in profile with good reach and drive, and straight and true coming and going. LIMIT DOG (12 Entries, 2 Absent)

Lovely class where I shortlisted 7 quality dogs before placing my final 5. A mix of types but all appealed for different attributes.

1st Law Mrs E SH CH SANDTI BACK OF THE NET

I was so delighted to have the opportunity to judge this handsome mid gold dog I'd admired from the ringside before. He is so well balanced, just the right amount of substance and oozes breed type. Beautifully shaped masculine head with kindly expression, excellent front construction with a rear to match. Effortless free mover who happily strode around the ring, moving accurately and with style. Stood four square attentive to his handler, he didn't put a foot wrong all day. He was presented in top condition and such a credit to his breeders and owner. He was up against some very strong competition, but I couldn't deny him the top spot today as he embodied so many of the qualities I look for in a golden. CC, RBIS

2nd Williams Mrs L EVENINGHILL DETROIT RED

Another handsome mid gold dog who was presented in a beautiful profuse golden coat in excellent condition. Superb masculine head with a kindly expression. Excellent front and rear angulation with good body and bone. Moves very nicely from all sides. Full of quality, but just slightly longer cast than 1st.

3rd Haxton Mrs C DANTASSIE DOUBLE TAKE

One I've judged before and similar comments apply, he is a picture of balance and moderation. Lovely head and expression and well made throughout. Effortless mover. Just didn't quite have the finish of the first 2 today but he is full of quality.

OPEN DOG (13 Entries, 0 Absent)

I was so impressed with this class and truly could have done with more red cards. I shortlisted 8 top quality dogs for further inspection and was very much splitting hairs selecting the final 5. Separating the top 3 felt near impossible, as I liked them all a lot for different qualities, but decisions had to be made.

1st Widebeck Mrs L COMBINE BYLINE (ATC SWE)

This handsome dark gold dog just kept drawing my eye. He excels for breed type - balanced and moderate with just the right amount of substance and bone and the tightest of cat like feet. Shown in a profuse double coat and hard condition, he looked as if he'd have no trouble doing a full day's work, and I later found out that's exactly what he'd done just the day before! One of the best movers of the day, gently wagging his tail and free stood to advantage, he pushed hard till the very end and I was delighted to award him the RCC in tough competition.

2nd Bawden MBE Miss CL SH CH BALSAMINA BEACHCOMBER AT DARTHILL JW

A top quality cream dog I'd judged before as a youngster and was delighted to have the chance to judge again in full bloom. Lovely masculine head and kindly expression. The best of front assemblies with excellent layback of shoulder and return of upper arm, excellent body and substance, topline and tailset. Well angulated rear allowing him to power around the ring with good reach and drive. He is the total picture standing, balanced with the correct proportions and outline. Just wished he gave a little more of himself on the move on the day, but loved him.

3rd Pastusiak Miss K SH CH/INT CH/MULTI CH PRINCE CHARMING QDORE OF LABGOLD (ATC POL)

Another I'd judged as a youngster and was delighted to see again. A stunning top quality champion who is hard to fault. He is the ultimate showman with an ever wagging tail, freestanding perfectly for his handler and moving effortlessly around the ring keeping his firm level topline at all times. Another of my favourites who pushed so hard but having to split hairs he just didn't quite have the finish of the first two today.
