Bournemouth Dalmatians
Ms M Hobbs
I had a wonderful time judging Dalmatians at Bournemouth this year. Thank you to my stewards Elaine and Tec for their professionalism and keeping me hydrated and on time. It was lovely to be back at the old venue, sheltered from the heat in those beautiful New Forest woods — though it was still quite stifling at times! The overall quality was excellent, as usual. Quite a few exhibits were affected by seasonal coat condition, which I completely ignored until it came to making my final decisions. I fully understand how difficult it can be to keep coats at their best at this time of year, and of course it doesn’t affect the dogs’ movement, balance, or performance. It’s simply one of those things that happens — but when making those final choices, it did help to tip the balance.

Eye-catching black bitch who moved steadily once she found her rhythm. She has a very pretty head, well balanced and symmetrical, with a good layback of shoulder, level topline, pleasing bend of stifle, and nicely deep chest. Unfortunately, her slip collar restricted her forward movement and caused her to pull, but otherwise, her movement was difficult to fault.

A very pleasing bitch, close to the breed standard and of excellent overall quality. Beautifully marked with clear, well-distributed spotting and a balanced, well-proportioned outline. Possesses a lovely length of neck, well-laid shoulders, and tight, compact feet. Feminine, planar head with a kind expression. Longer cast than some, which enables her to cover the ground with ease and freedom on the move. Tail correctly set and carried, showing good drive and reach. Particularly admired her clean movement both fore and aft, never close or pinning. Just preferred the overall construction and finish of the winner on the day, and she appeared to feel the heat a little, but a quality bitch of excellent type and merit.
Class 1823 OB (6 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: FINCH, Miss Sarah-Jane & BONNER, Mr Jacques Sophtspot Kalamity Jane With Dalticino
A somewhat surprise placement in this strong class, she went on to take the Challenge Certificate with ease. She moved with excellent purpose and drive, maintaining the best topline of the day. Longer cast than most, yet beautifully proportioned, with clean, even spotting that matched closely to the second-placed bitch; however, she just had the edge when moving out. Previously perhaps overlooked, today she truly came into her own. Her performance was full of animation and precision, showing perfect tracking both fore and aft. It was her effortless, rhythmic movement that secured her the class and ultimately the CC. A memorable performance from a quality bitch who thoroughly deserved her win.
2nd: HOWARD - RIDDLE, Mrs S L Ch Shydally Star Attraction
I was delighted to take 2nd in the class and the Reserve ticket, as both pairings were simply wonderful. My 2nd in Open Bitch had lovely length, correct stance, a beautiful head, and ears set neatly down to the neck. Her feet were well placed, and she stood naturally without being overstretched, holding herself with poise. Overall, she presented a real picture of balance and quality.
