Southern Flatcoated Retriever Club

Breed: Retriever (Flat Coated)

I would firstly like to thank the Southern Flatcoated Retriever Club and their members for the kind invitation to judge their Championship show. The weather, while windy, was great for the dogs. Since I last judged, which was just males at NEFRA, the feet seem to have improved. However, there were still quite a few with short upper arms and level mouths, two mouths were very incorrect. While I’m not a mouth fanatic, the standard calls for a scissor bite so please remember this when breeding.

I was blessed with a quality entry and dogs who I liked had to go cardless in some classes. Open Dog, Limit and Open bitch were particularly strong giving me tough, but nice, choices. I must also mention the Baby Puppy and Puppy classes which contained some super babies. I hope they progress with promise that they currently show.

Baby Puppy Bitch (3)
1st Bellamy’s Moontorn Chasing The Dream
What a super baby to head this lovely class. She has it all there to come. Very pretty head, well laid shoulders and great return of upper arm. She already shows balance in the body and is topped of with a happy tail action. On the move she carried herself well and was very together for her tender age. BBPIS
2nd Egginton’s Pajanbeck Hold My HaloAnother promising baby. Nice eye shape and colour, lovely length of neck and level topline leading to correctly set tail. Quality bone and good rear angulation with width of thigh. On the move she was not as collected as 1 but still had purpose in her action.
3rd Bowen’s Clandrift Funky Angel

This young lad is of lovely type. Pleasing head and eye, good shoulders and topline. He already has good depth of rib and is short in loin. Good oval bone with neat feet and short hocks. He moved out well in profile. Just pipped by his litter sister for BBPIS.
2nd Bowen’s Clandrift Make It Funky
Nice baby at an awkward stage. Nicely moulded head. Good bone and feet. Good tailset and carriage, he is a little bum high at the moment. Deep enough in rib and good width of thigh. Covered enough ground in profile on the move.

Smart young lady, pleasing head, but a little round in eye. Showing balance through the body with good overall angulation and quality bone. I preferred her front over 2. Lovely bone leading to good feet. Gradual spring of rib leading to her short loin. When free standing she presents a lovely outline.
2nd Kulczycka’s Everblack Euphoria
A different type to 1 and I preferred her eye shape. Level topline and well turned rear. Short hocks and deep enough in rib. She still has plenty of maturing to do but is just right for her age. In good coat and feathering coming on nicely. On the move she was true both ways.

Close up to one, she is very similar in type. Appealing head and eye. I preferred her length of neck to 1. Deep in rib with gradual spring, Lovely angulation and short hocks. Good bone and tailset. She wasn’t as together on the move as 1.

Happy young lady of lovely type. I liked her head and expression, she is clean through the neck and has a level topline with good tailset. She has a pronounced forechest and is deep enough in rib. Her rear shows moderation in angulation and she has quality bone with tight feet. Her movement was at times erratic but I saw enough to give her the class.

Liver bitch of different type. Suer moulded head with good eye colour. Good shoulders and strong topline. Her tail is a little high set and she was a bit proud of it on the move. Enough bone and good feet. She is short in loin and has good width of first thigh. Movement was steady and accurate.

She is so balanced with super shoulders as well as length and return of upper arm. Mature in body and moderately angulated at the rear. Good topline to correct tail which never stopped wagging. She moved with good open stride, driving from her short hocks. Very pleased to award her what was her 3rd CC & BIS. Congratulations!
2nd Larson’s Int/SEU(U)Ch,NOUCh,DkCh(U) Almanza Dancin’ On The Tables
Very pleased to have the chance to go over this bitch, I feel she has to be examined to appreciate her. She has a super head and eye of the correct shape and colour. She has quality bone and tight feet. Well laid shoulder and great return of upper arm. She has a deep rib and short loin leading to moderate stifle and well developed thigh. Her rich liver coat was in good shape, I would just prefer a little less trimming to enhance her outline. She moved with enthusiasm and drive. A well deserved RCC.

This boy is a size larger than I would prefer and is going to take time to come together. He has a beautifully mounded head and the darkest of eyes, well laid shoulder giving good length of neck. He has quality bone and is in good bodily condition. He is deep enough in body and has a short loin. His front and rear angulation are moderate and his tail is nicely set. He shows good extension on the move and is accurate both ways. BPD

A real baby here. He has a nicely moulded head and good length of neck. He's just a bit up on his leg at the moment and will take time to fill his frame. Good bone and short loin. He was happy on the move, full of puppy exuberance.

3rd Durrant’s Glenturret Wet My Whistle

1st Hall’s Hightyne Night Train
A super young dog with much to like about him. He has a kind expression, although I would like a little more moulding to his head. Lovely lay of shoulder with good length and return of upper arm to go with his well developed rear presents a lovely picture. He has correct body proportions and quality bone down to tight feet. On the move he shows a great open stride and drive. Pleased to award him the RCC.
2nd Sullivan’s Wyrebeck Shockwave
A lovely liver dog whose head I preferred to 1 although he is of a different type. Clean neck and shoulders with good length of upper arm but I would like a bit more return. Well placed elbows on his gradual spring of rib. Good topline and tail set with well developed thigh. On the move he would benefit from going a little slower to show off his front movement.

2nd Buckley’s Blacktoft Brindisi By Buckleyhill
Lovely headed dog, which I preferred over 1. He has good length of neck and good return of upper arm but again I would like more length. Plenty of dept to his rib and well turned rear. I would just like a little more animation to make the most of himself.

He drew my eye when he entered the ring, he was just what I was looking for. Super head and kind dark eye, moderate length of neck, well placed shoulders with excellent length and return of upper arm. He has good depth to his rib with a gradual spring. Short in loin and short in hock. His tail is correctly set which didn’t stop wagging. On the move he went with drive and covered plenty of ground, lovely to watch. He was on top form today and deserved the CC & RBIS.
2nd Walker’s ShCh Lizzlog Shotgun Harry JW
A slightly different head on this boy but still correct. He is so balanced in profile with lovely front angulation giving well placed upper arm. Good through the body with depth of rib and loin.
