City Of Birmingham Canine Association

Breed: Bearded Collie

My thanks to the City of Birmingham for this wonderful appointment. Also thanks to all the Beardie exhibitors who entered, I was delighted with the entry of 85 dogs and I enjoyed judging each one.

Firstly, the quality was outstanding, breeders should be so proud of what they are producing, in most classes the standard was exceptional, to the point that I was placing dogs 3rd, 4th and VHC which were of CC quality and others leaving the ring too. I was ‘nit picking’ between placements and decisions were so close on so many occasions.

Secondly, the presentation of the dogs; simply stunning. I didn’t feel one knot, all coats were clean and in the main product free, a little trimming was seen yet nothing which altered the outline of the dog, just some tidy feet was noticeable and this I took into consideration. In the main I had naturally presented, groomed, spotlessly clean, harsh double coated beardies who really looked like they were prepared to the very highest of standards. I know the amount of time it takes to keep coats so really appreciate the effort you all made.

Thirdly, temperaments; not one dog was stand-offish, not one showing anything but a happy-go-lucky inquisitive attitude. All were happy to be handled, all moved on loose leads and seemed to be enjoying their time in the ring, again testament to good breeding and owners training their dogs in a positive manner in which they accept the ring situation.

Lastly, fitness and condition; most dogs were in tip top condition, muscled and fit. Just be careful not to confuse lean with thin. Fitness extended to the handlers too - I moved exhibits plenty and the handlers all kept up!

Beautiful brown puppy coat covered his toned body. Good pigment, correct length of neck leading onto a level topline. Adequate angulation and moved freely. Once he settles he’ll really be able to show himself off to his advantage.

2nd: 705 ROBERTSON, Mr & Mrs R&M Arranbrae Laird Of Quothquan JW – Another nice lad at 9 years old. Such an expressive eye. Masculine without being coarse. Lovely hash jacket covered his toned body. Moved around the ring in harmony with his handler.

Class 373 MPD (3 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 682 LEWIS, Mrs Janet & LEWIS, Mr Michael Potterdale Prime Legacy. Super youngster as you would expect from this kennel. He’s full of himself and so he should be, the most endearing of inquisitive expressions, his head proportions are textbook, correct bite, eye, pigment. Strong neck leading into a balanced body, level topline and the required angulation both front and rear, he’s covered in the most wonderful of puppy coats to finish off the picture too. On the move this boy just excels; he’s got reach and drive and can cover the ground easily. His movement is a joy to watch. The bitch puppy pushed him hard for Best Puppy however he deserved top honours and followed on to win the Puppy Group under pastoral specialist Derek Smith and then topped his weekend with RBPIS under the renowned Paul Wilkinson. Well done - I sense bigger wins coming his way.

2nd: 692 OSBORNE, Mrs Susan & OSBORNE, Mr Michael Potterdale Prime Edition, brother to the winner and many similar attributes. Darker coat with classic beardie markings. Nice topline, correct angulation and moved lovely around the ring, I’m sure he’ll have a bright future too.

1st: 655 BUSWELL, Mrs Anne Chelsasa Private Eye On Scotesham - see SBD

2nd: 654 BURGON, Mrs Lyndsay & BURGON, Mr Andrew & BURGON, Talraz Drumbeat For Lyngem, a happy and endearing puppy who seemed to enjoy his time in the ring. He’s quite raw and Bambi-like being all legs, his topline was level on stance however roaches slightly on the move, this said he’s got time on his side and needs to use it to develop and mature through his puppy months.

Class 375 JD (4 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 659 COLLINS, Mrs Sarah Jane Full Of The Dickens Winner Takes It All For Kingswood - what a smashing youngster who is just so lovely to go over. He’s immature in coat, as expected in junior but it was harsh and immaculately presented. His body is balanced with a level topline, good croup and tail set. His head is still developing yet he’s got a scissor bite and lovely dark eyes. He covered the ground easily and shows much promise.

2nd: 657 CARTER, Miss J Memorylane Emotions In Motion For Ravenswyre (imp). On first look he was my winner and I had to remind myself I was judging a junior class as he’s so mature in body and his coat is quite remarkable! He’s beautiful on stance, not so long with a level topline, short loin and gentle croup. His head and expression is just super, dark pigment, correct bite, nice eyes, good stop and correct head proportions. On the move he had the required reach and super drive, he covered the ground easily, however on the odd occasion he appeared to dip on his front, it wasn’t constant and maybe he wasn’t happy on the carpet, but unfortunately, I couldn’t award him first today.

3rd: 702 REYNOLDS, Mrs Joy & REYNOLDS, Mr Charlie Beabeardies Blue Velvet – really liked this boys outline and shape with such an eye catching coat colour, it almost shined yet retained its correct texture.

Class 377 GD (2 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 674 HOLLOWELL, Miss Elise & HACKETT, Ms Pauline Capelaw Nathaniel - really like this chap - is outline was so typical and he was presented naturally, there wasn’t an ounce of trimming, even his feet were natural and I admire his owner for showing that a super dog doesn’t need to be trimmed. His coat was still impeccably clean and harsh and it covered his body perfectly to show off his shape. Super outline, good neck and chest, level topline and gentle croup. Nice rear angulation which gave him drive from the rear. He was just carrying a touch of weight today, however easily rectified for a future show. A super understated boy - I hope others will appreciate him too.

2nd: 650 BOWDEN, Mrs S E & BOWDEN, Miss C E Subessen The Wonder Of You - as Yearling

A difficult class with three lovely boys who all shone for slightly different reasons.

1st: 680 JONES, Mrs S B & JONES, Mr K.R. Clanwillow Crown And Glory – two-year-old lad who was in tip top body condition. He won the class on his movement, I felt he had the correct angulation both front and rear. He’s masculine with a strong head without being coarse, dark pigment, beautiful expression too. Well proportioned throughout.

2nd: 643 AXFORD, Mrs & Mr K & R & AXFORD, Miss J Bramblemead Bollinger Boy JW – not the bone of 1st or 3rd but his body was well muscled and he certainly was fit. Coat was of good quality although not the quantity of the others in the class.

3rd: 721 WEBB, Mrs J & WEBB, Mr L Eltimaris Hip Hip Hooray. Really liked him too, correct angulation, good head, correct proportions with short loin, I feel he would benefit from being moved a little faster to really show off his movement. Super coat.

He’s got a muscular neck leading into correctly placed shoulders and super front (and rear) angulation which really makes him move out and cover the ground with ease. He’s from the top drawer. Res CC and pushed the CC winner hard!

2nd: 656 BUTCHER, Miss Sara Sylvabrae Newtons Law. Another super boy - what a fit and well muscled Beardie and covered in the most fabulous of coats. He’s got a lovely depth to his chest, good front angulation, level topline and nice spring to his rib, he floats around the ring and covers the ground effortlessly. Certainly a winning dog and held his own in this tough class.

He has the most wonderful expressions with the kindest of eyes which were so endearing. Lovely proportions and such super rear drive on the move. He just didn’t appear to be feeling it on the day but that doesn’t take away from him being a beautiful Beardie. Rest in Peace Moss.
