Miniature Smooth Haired Dachshunds
I would like to thank the club for their kind invitation to judge at this very friendly show in a good venue. My thanks also to my steward, Jack, for his great assistance throughout judging. I would say that I had some lovely dogs to judge and thank the exhibitors for their entries. In general, many needed more muscle conditioning, a few with broad heads, short muzzles and round eyes. Size is creeping upwards in many and although I very much like substance, there were some larger males & very strong females well over 11 lbs!
Minor Puppy Dog (1,0)
1. Tite’s Rijobeau Well I Never – stunning 8-month B/T of a correct size, ample bone & substance. Good masculine head, lovely length of neck lowing into very well laid-back shoulders. Tight in elbow and lovely tight feet. Correct length to height ratio with good length of rounded ribbing and nice short loin. The best of chunky well-rounded hindquarters showing perfect angulation. For a puppy moved with style showing good drive and reach – at one with his handler. Delighted to award him BPD, Best Puppy & thrilled to watch him perform with style to take Reserve Best Puppy in Show. A credit to his clever breeder – is for sure a champion in the making.
Puppy Dog (2,0)
1. Small’s Stargang Morrissey for Devondax – 10-month smart B/T who had a strong outline on the stack, strong masculine head and well angulated shoulders. Would like the elbows to be a little tighter but will fill in chest with maturity so this may improve. Good length of ribbing loin length OK. Won on better hindquarter angulation and use on the move. Could be a little more confident which would improve the whole outline on the move – shows promise.
2. Dalton’s Llansansior Gentle Reader – 10 months red with many similar virtues to winner. Good masculine head, plenty of substance for a puppy. Decent length of neck and well balance height to length. Ribbing OK & decent topline although I would like tighter elbows & more turn of stifle to improve hind angulation & outline on the move. Needs more time to mature.
Junior Dog (3,0)
1. Kent’s Lokmadi Charles Rex - Very smart clear red of 14 months who has great ring presence and style. Masculine without being coarse, lovely hound head, great dark eye of correct shape. Good length of neck into correctly angulated shoulders. Lovely ribbing and nice short loin best of toplines both standing and on the move. Beautifully angulated hindquarters used with purpose on the move. Moves with an air of style and showmanship. One to watch in the future.
2. Cato’s Jenivon’s Alexandra of Earldax – lovely slightly smaller B/T puppy. Less mature than winner although a lovely outline both on the stack and in movement. Lovely neck and shoulders into a flowing level topline. Good hind angulation and moved well coming and going. For me would like a little more masculine head, with a bit more length of muzzle and slightly less width. Handled very well and should go on to do well.
3. Wood’s Devondax Earned my Stripes at Littlecopse.
Yearling Dog (2,0)
1. Gittins Boomerloo Robin – Almost 2yr B/T of well-balanced proportions good front, tight elbows and well-placed shoulders. Slightly hesitant on the day which did not help his outline on the move. Has a good topline better stacked than moving. Won the class on his better size and masculinity.
2. Tite’s Llennocor Little Red Devil – Red of smaller type, although well balanced would prefer a stronger head/muzzle. Sound conformation throughout although topline rising a little towards the hindquarters on the day.
Post Graduate Dog (2,1)
1. Strange’s Bronia Armnd at Cazdachs – 2.5 yrs red of sound conformation, good shoulders and well angulated hindquarters, Moved soundly fore and aft. Lost his topline behind the shoulder on the move & would prefer a little stronger underjaw.
Limit Dog (5,1)
1. Corominas’ Scenterbay Raphael for Ruichango – Impressive shaded red of stylish proportions. Shown in extremely fit conditions. Lots of good muscle definition. Good head and dark almond shaped eye. Super prosternum and depth of keel into lovely underline. Good ground clearance. Strong topline and correct loin. Super hind angulation giving the correct driving action on the move. Good reach in front. Pushed the CC winner hard in the challenge. Delighted to award him the Reserve CC.
2. Tite’s Rijobeau Give Em the Boot – rising 4 yr B/T – cracking outline on the stack, good angles both in the shoulders and hindquarters and moved with drive and purpose. Could be slightly tighter in elbow and preferred the head of the winner. A very sound honest male that showed well in strong competition.
3. Forge’s Normpug Roman HolidayJW
Open Dog (5,0)
1. O’Connell’s Ch. Rijobeau Rumours with Llennocor JW – A stunning B/T lad of rising 2 years. Caught my eye as he entered the ring, with his showmanship and free movement. Absolutely spot on for size, stunning outline, masculine head and strong underjaw. Lovely length of neck flowing into copybook well angulated shoulders. Strong level topline and lovely underline. Muscled chunky hindquarters used with purpose showing great drive and reach on the move. Overall, a beautiful balanced outline combined with great showmanship on the day I was delighted to award the CC and in tough competition against his litter sister Best of Breed. Thrilled to watch him perform to his best again in the BIS competition securing the top spot – Best in Show. My congratulations to both owner/handler & his breeder. I note I awarded his sire his third and crowning CC back in 2016. Super type in this breeding.
2. Mason’s Ch. Teckeltown Surspicious Mind – another super B/T same age as winner and has a super outline and lovely hound head on correct shoulders. Good prosternum & depth of keel. Great topline and nice hindquarters. Pushed the winner hard as he had many of the same attributes however was not as settled on the move on the day so had to settle for second.
3. Williams & Moes Ch. Cwmdarhian Joe Calzghe.
Veteran Dog/Bitch (1,0)
1. Butterstone’s Joshotto’s Orange Blossom – A nicely put together female of 7 years and the dam of my res bitch CC winner. Very honest and has correctly laid shoulders, a nice head and neck and a nice topline. Well angulated hindquarters. Stood alone but well deserved her placing. Best Veteran.
Minor Puppy Bitch (5,2)
1. Gardner’s Vanitonia Sabina Pleasure – lovely B/T of 7.5 months with lots of learning to do. Good balanced size and smart outline, correct well laid shoulder lovely, elegant head and neckline into strong level topline. Once she learns how to use her well angulated hindquarters she will present an even nicer outline on the move. A very promising puppy.
2. Heralds Winterfield Whiskey Maude – Nice shaded red of sound construction and another promising baby of 8.5 months. Moved soundly fore and aft just carrying a little extra weight which spoilt her outline on the day.
3. Sommers Penjulai’s Over the Moon.
Puppy Bitch (2,1)
1. Rudkin’s Metadale Legacy of Life – 9.5 month shaded red of a correct size and very soundly constructed. Looked a picture in profile and has a good prosternum and sweep of keel. Lovely topline and good hindquarters. Needs to come together with her handler to show a better picture on the move but has all the credentials to do very well. Best Bitch Puppy
Junior Bitch (5,1)
1. Beach’s Beachdax Girl of My Dreams JW – 18 months red brindle of excellent shape and outline – well up to size for me but stood out for her correct outline and ultra sound movement. If anything, a little over developed in the keel giving very little ground clearance – a type of the past when we all looked for long, low & level. Still liked her a lot.
2. Gentle’s Delandmar Miss Daisy – B/T of 16 months. Liked her size and balanced proportions. Good head and neck. Moved with positivity and tried her hardest for her handler in this strong class. A well-deserved second on the day.
3. Kent’s Lokmadi Don’t Bring Lulu
Yearling Bitch (4,0)
1. Butterstone’s Joshotto Martha Gunn – a beautifully made smaller B/T of 20 months. Everything flowed on this lovely young bitch, and she caught my eye entering the ring. I asked all exhibits to free stand their dogs whilst looking at their movement and this girl could not stand badly. A real miniature retaining quality and soundness without being toy like. Good head and neck. Lovely lay of shoulder and the best of toplines. Nicely angulated hindquarters used with purpose as she drove round the ring. Had some strong opposition in the challenge but I was delighted to be able to award her the Reserve CC behind a stunning exhibit. I hope that she goes on to do very well and wish her very proficient owner/handler, who I would say looked a little stunned, the very best in the future.
2. Herald’s Winterfield Lady in Red – red of 19 months. A well-made girl on rangier lines. Nice outline held on the move, correct front, tight elbows and strong hindquarters, unlucky to come up against the winner.
3. Small’s Glynlythe’s Heirloom for Devondax.
Post Graduate Bitch (9,2)
1. Bullingham’s Stoweytop Suzie – a very smart B/T of a correct size and substance. Good head and neck, correct in front and held her outline the best of this class both in the stack and on the move. Well handled. Being picky I would like a little more length.
2. Rudkin’s Metadale Legacy of Life
3. Tite’s Rijobeau Ella Vaday
Limit Bitch (9,0)
1. O’Connell’s Rijobeau Rita Bix with Llennocor – rising 2-year B/T and litter sister to my dog CC winner. Beautifully put together, of a super size, leading this strong class with her showmanship and style. Perfectly balanced throughout with a great front, strong prosternum and lovely sweep of keel into a correct underline with enough ground clearance. Good head and eye, lovely sweeping neck and shoulder line. The best of toplines correct croup and super hind angulation providing great drive ion the move. Used her correct construction to reach and drive as many fail to. In the challenge she was the best mover of the girls and with great handling showed herself to perfection. CC & BOS. She gave her brother a real run off for BOB and I hope her 3rd CC is not too far off.
2. Gittins Markidachs Saffrons Gift at Boomerloo. 5-year-old B/T awarding her Dam the res CC last time I judged. A very similar type in size and shape to the winner and shared many of her attributes. Beautifully balanced and of a lovely size. Certainly, no shame in her second placing today – handled and showed well,
3. Bullingham’s Rozamie Making Magic.
Open Bitch (8,4)
1. Williams & Moes Ch. Cwmdarhian Cold As Ice – A beautifully constructed girl on very similar lines to the CC winner. Of a correct size and having a beautiful outline. Good head and dark eye, lovely neck and good reach of neck. Super topline and lovely hind quarters. Sadly, on the day, in the challenge, did not want to make the most of herself on the move so unfortunately although a strong contender from a construction perspective, without the movement to go with it did not feature in my top winners’ line up.
2. Mason’s Teckeltown The Show Girl. Another super bitch from this breeder/exhibitor – super size and shape. Rising 2 years and perfectly balanced throughout. Moved well but I just preferred the outline on the winner on the day. Handled to perfection as were all this exhibitors’ dogs. Will have her day I am sure.
3. Beach’s Beachdax Queen of Hearts
