Critiques for The Northern Parson Russell Terrier Club

Single Breed Open Show on the 4th May 202 at Low Hesket, Cumbria

Judge: Linda Shelton

My thanks to the Committee of the NPRT for my appointment to judge at their Open Show held at Low Hesket, Cumbria. This was my first appointment judging a Single Breed Open Show and I looked forward to the privilege with a sense of anticipation and not a little trepidation. It is a huge jump from judging Special Award Classes and breed classes within a show to a complete show and you can’t help but wonder if you are ready! Thank you also to my Stewards, CeCe and Ann. An extra thank you to Dave Mitchell who stepped into steward at the last minute and whose experience and help was invaluable to me; I learnt a lot! To those Exhibitors who entered under me, thank you for the super entry of lovely PRT’s and your sporting support of my choices on the day. A final shout out to everyone involved with the NPRT, you put on a cracking show and your hospitality is always second to none.

On a breed standard note, there were good strong teeth on the majority (a couple not so clean) and some lovely ‘tighter’ feet than in the past. A few exhibits could do with a bit more 2nd thigh definition. A final point, there is a bit of ‘high stepping’ going on, probably down to leads being held too high or tight, which does distort movement on the walk.

Class 1. BPD (0/0)

Class 2. BPB (2/0)

Two beautiful little PRT’s, a lovely way to start the classes.

1st Nejac Texas Rose at Hoolmark. Hooley, Mr. M. & Mrs. M.5 month tri bitch. A feminine girl, lovely temperament on the table even at this young age. Correct wedge head with all attributes of a nicely developing girl. Has a lovely expression. Great teeth! Coat was good for age. Tail set, profile, angulation all very nice. Settled well on the move and goes well for her handler already. BBP

2nd Woldlincs Super Dooper. Baker, Mr. M. & Mrs. J.

Another 5 month old super little bitch. T/w with great head and all features good, eyes, teeth and ears. Another one with a lovely temperament and easy to go over. Went well for her handler but just lost out as a bit unsettled today but going to be a little cracker of a PRT.

Class 3. Veteran D/B (3/1)

1st Chadbrook Elka. MCCluskey & Young, Mr. P. & Miss. J.

A veteran that belies her age of 8 years. Had seen her around the shows but this was my first time hands on and she didn’t disappoint in any way. A superb veteran in tip top condition and a happy temperament with it. Wedge shaped head that ticks all the boxes for eyes, ears and teeth. Easily spanned, straight front, good shoulders and rear angulation and tail set all leading to a smoothly driven movement around the ring. BV & BViS

2nd Alncroft Isle See. Hobson & Aclam, Mr. D. & Mrs. J.

9 and a half year old classic PRT veteran bitch of well-balanced proportions and build. Great wedge shaped head with dark eye and nice expression. Lovely coat. Nice topline and moved well around the ring for her handler. Perhaps not as spannable as she has been but still a super example of a PRT in her prime.

Class 4. SBD/B (1/0)

1st Liverpool Luck. Deveney, Miss L.

One year old tri bitch. Very nice to go over, calm and happy. Nice head with correct wedge, dark eye, shallow stop and good ears. Great coat (as in a really great coat). Spannable. Nice profile. Moved out so well for her handler and comes over as a confident little bitch with great attitude. BSB

Class 5. MPD (0/0)

Class 6. PD (3/1)

1st Foxfur Eavesdropper. Anderson, McAulay & Manson, Miss M, Miss E & Ms D).

9 months old. Very nice profile on the table. Masculine pup with good terrier expression in dark almond shaped eye. Lots of breed standard here. Have to comment on those great teeth and mouth. Lovely temperament to go over. Straight front, good topline kept on the move and good drive from rear.

2nd Heythrop Tempura, Bigland, Mr. R. & Mrs. L.

Another 9 month old with lovely profile. Correct head proportions, nice dark eye. Good shoulders and rise over loin. One of the best fronts and feet of today. Am sure he will have a great future but was unsettled today and lost out on movement.

Class 7. JD (1/0)

1st Pacolito Soul Trader, Mann, Mr. & Mrs. J.

15 month old boy who stood alone today. Overall, very nice young dog. Correct wedge head and features. Lovely outline and very good coat. Rise over loin discernible and presents a nice profile. Straight front and nice rear. Not so happy on the move today but worthy of the 1st placing and look forward to seeing him on a more settled occasion.

Class 8. PGD (1/0)

1st Forgefox Roll the Dice at Hoolmark, Hooley, Mr. M. & Mrs. M.

A lovely boy, just over two years old who stood alone on this occasion. Have judged him before and he has developed so very nicely, especially on the move. Correct wedge head with dark eye and lovely terrier expression. Good teeth and jaw. He is all in proportion and spans easily. Moved out well for his handler.

Class 9. LD (2/0)

1st Tusiquevales Kudos with Pacolito (IMP Ita), Baker, Mr. M. & Mrs J.

10 month old t/w very masculine dog. A ‘powerhouse’ of a PRT that is balanced all through. Classic PRT wedge shaped head with good teeth and bite. Dark eyes and a good ‘terrier on alert’ expression but nice temperament and lovely to go over on the table. Harsh coat. Strong, straight front and legs. Correct rise over loin with nice topline. Spannable. Well developed 2nd thigh, nice tail set and good rear giving a strong drive around the ring (my notes on the day say “hell of a mover”). BD BPiS BiS

2nd Heythrop Toptag, Bigland, Mr. R. & Mrs. L.

Just over three years old. Finer boned than the 1st but still the complete Breed Standard picture of a PRT. Lovely tri with strong markings. Classic wedge head with shallow stop, nice ears, eyes and good expression. Very spannable. Nice rear quarters and outline but not a ‘happy mover’ today.

Class 10. OD (1/0)

1st Partridgdale Flynn. Hobson, Mr. D. & Aclam, Mrs. J.

This lovely boy is nearly five and doesn’t look it at all. A super dog who is a proper all over example of the Breed Standard. Such a great head with everything correct and a lovely, lively PRT expression. He obviously loves being in the ring and it shows, in his stance and his movement. Correct front, shoulders and rise over loin. Moves out so well driven by his strong 2nd thigh and correct angulation. RBD

Class 11. MPB (2/0)

This class could be best described as my hardest choice class!

1st Pacolito Going Fur Gold, Baker, Mr. M. & Mrs. J.

A seven month old ‘cracker’ of a girl. All round example of the Breed Standard. Lovely markings and good strong coat. Lovely to go over, especially for such a young bitch. Lively expression and happy temperament. Nice in profile with rise over loin evident. Good angulation, topline and tailset. Some development to do, but early days. Moved out well for her handler. RBB BPB RBPiS

2nd Foxfur Bewitched by Kylini. Rimmer, Miss M. K.

Seven month old little beauty of a PRT. Correct wedge head, lovely eyes and expression. Good markings. Lovely coat and pelt. Nice straight front and good angulation. She needs to settle on the move as she is a bit ‘all over’ at the moment but time and maturity will do that. Nice rapport with her handler and she definitely pushed for 1st place.

Class 12. PB (2/0)

Another hard choice class!

1st Heythrop Tempted to Chadbrook. Mccluskey & Young, Mr. P. & Miss J.

9 month old and very nice with proper PRT lively expression. Wedge shaped head, everything in proportion with good dark eye and correct ears. Very settled on the table and lovely to go over. Spannable. Nice straight front, tight feet and discernible rise over loin. Moved out well.

2nd Cassjoebar Caledonia from Mindlen. Roberts & Murray, Mrs. L. & Mrs. C. A.

Lovely 10 month old feminine bitch with so much to like. Good head, eyes and ears. Well balanced all over giving a correct topline with nice tailset. Spannable. Moved ok for her handler and will be interesting to see her when she matures a little more. Lost out on movement to 1st today.

Class 13. JB (0/0)

Class 14. PGB (1/0)

1st Cassjoebar Chunky Monkey. Casson, Miss. T.

Stood alone and a very well deserved 1st place. Overall very lovely 18 month old bitch with much to note about her. Very nice wedge shaped head with shallow stop, good teeth and bite, feminine features and expression. Superb coat. Straight front and nice rear angulation. Hits the Breed Standard very well. Moved out nicely for her handler.

Class 15. LB (5/2)

1st Drailam Foxglove. Anderson, Miss M.

A little bitch you might glance over but look again and the quality is all there and she caught my eye when she first came into the ring. Four and a half years old. A lovely, feminine bitch but with a great ‘sparky’ terrier expression. Easily spanned. Well balanced all through, from straight front, rise over loin to tail set and moderate angulation. Lively demeanour and interested in everything going on around her. Lovely to go over on the table. Great profile. Nice straight correct front, good lay of shoulder and topline held on the move with a particularly nice free flowing movement around the ring. BB RBiS BOS

2nd Heythrop Tangletop. Bigland, Mr. R. & Mrs. L.

Four years and ten months old and another eye catcher. Feminine bitch with lovely breed standard head, strong markings, correct features and dark eye. Very spannable. Nice straight front, good length of neck, rise over loin and good tail set. Not settled on the move today.

3rd Heythrop Taranna. Bigland, Mr. R. & Mrs. L.

Class 16. OB (4/1)

1st CH. Deglacobs Rebecca Riot by Pacolito JW. Baker, Mr. M. & Mrs. J.

One year and 8 months old beautiful t/w bitch. I judged her at 15 months and she has matured so well. Breed standard all through. Nice wedge head, correct ears, dark eye and strong muzzle with nice dentition and appealing feminine expression. Spannable. Straight front, rise and good tail set. Great mover around the ring.

2nd Heythrop Topsy Turvey. Bigland, Mr. R. & Mrs. L.

Very attractive trim PRT bitch, very feminine. Good head and features with correct stop and dark eye. Excellent front and stands on tight feet and in great condition with a good coat. Not a happy mover today, unfortunately.

3rd Bardrain Princess Meerada. Young & Mccluskey, Miss J. & Mr. P.

Class 17 Brace (1/1)
