SHAR PEI

JUDGE: LINDA LANE (KONISHIKI)

I was so honoured to judge Shar Pei at LKA. The breed is set in my heart as my first breed, one that set me off in the showing world. I was thrilled with the overall quality of the dogs present and any could have changed places. Both the dog CC winner and the beautiful horsecoat girl CC winner ticked all the boxes for me. As everyone knows horsecoats are my passion and its seldom you see one being shown these days and the bitch CC winner was such a quality horsecoat.. A lot of the younger dogs were very well put together and I can see them, once matured, taking top honours. Thank you everyone for trusting my decisions so gracefully.

1. Gardner’s Mijujo Flat White. A really impressive 17 month red fawn male. So wonderfully balanced and with a correct but not overdone head (nose to stop and stop to occiput being equal). Such clear eyes, good bite, black tongue, cat like feet, small triangular ears. Coat had a harsh texture. In profile he had the correct slight dip and rise leading to a high sickle tail. His temperament was calm and pleasing and he was so attentive to his handler. On the move he drove well from the rear. He just needs to mature in his chest to complete the picture. I am sure he will be made up. I found him not overdone in any way and he was carrying just the right amount of weight.

2. Grimshaw’s Blow Me Down, 13 month old Apricot Dilute. An impressive dog who today was full of life. Nice nature. Good head with lavender tongue, clear eye. He had the correct dip and rise and correct body being height at withers equal to the length from point of shoulders to point of buttock. He came into his own on the move driving well around the ring. (1) was more the type I like but on another day these two will swap places.

3. Scott’s Zheniya Gold Dust.

1. Dawsons Quinnhalo Single Pringle JW, 2 year old red fawn boy of lovely type, square body, harsh coat, nice tailset good 1:1 head proportions, clean eye, dark pigment, cat like feet, standing gave a well balanced profile with good ribs and nice tuck up. Lovely sound front. He moved well around the ring and showed well for his handler. Was considered for top honours.

1. Grimshaw’s Ch Chernyi Chizh Baloved by All at Sharpuggles (imp) – (BOB) BD, Dog CC - this 5 year old red fawn male ticked all the boxes for me. Standing he had a perfect dip and rise topline showing no exaggeration of body wrinkle, such clean lines with excellent high sickle tail, medium length of neck with adequate wrinkling, correct angles front and rear and shone as a real showman. His head was proportioned well with such dark pigment, good bite, no tight lip, dark almond eyes, small triangular ears. So attentive to his owner and he really caught my eye entering the ring. His effortless, sound movement around the ring won him the top spot.

2. Sutherland and Bradley’s Ch Eki Zimurrak Jolerob When You Smile for Witchgait. (RBD)(RCC) I can understand how this beautifully schooled boy got his title. There is nothing to dislike about him. Very Masculine dog with strong body, good body proportions, topline showing the called for dip and rise, harsh coat, Good head and expression and is one with his handler when moving. The choice in this class was my preference not the quality of the dog. Both these dogs will no doubt change places on another day.

3. Bragg’s Loopang Jimmy Choo Junior.

1. Scott’s Zheniya Gold Dust. Best Special Beg. This one year old boy has lots to like, clean lines, harsh coat, good outline, nice clean head, shown in perfect condition, moved and showed so much better in this class. With more confidence will take top honours I am sure.

1. Wilkins Wanmei Follow the Sunshine. BB BCC RBOB. Stunning Stunning Stunning – this red fawn Horsecoat Bitch was right up my street. Its been ages since I have seen a horsecoat in the ring and this girl had everything I love about horsecoats. She had the shortest, harshest coat of the day presented in absolutely perfect condition, her exquisite head said Shar Pei all over, regal, superior, the muzzle was not overly wrinkled the head proportions just right, ears set firmly on top framing that beautiful face. Clean darkest eyes and wonderful mouth and tongue colour. Wonderful shoulder placement, dip to rise in the body, sickle tail, cat like feet. I hope she gets made up as this is the nicest example of a horsecoat I have seen for a while. Her nature was exemplary and she moved effortlessly and soundly around the ring with her handler. It made my day seeing such a wonderful example of a horsecoat.

2. Gardner’s Mijujo Costa Fortune. 17 month red fawn girl of excellent quality. So lovely to see this kennel still breeding and showing shar pei. A well bodied girl with typical brush coat head showing 1:1 proportions. Good dark eye and tongue pigment, carrying just enough weight. Excellent front, harsh coat, cat feet and great tailset and topline. Shame she came up against (1). Moved well coming and going.

3. Grimshaw’s Sharpuggles Hold On Tight.

Limit Bitch 2 (1)

1. Poole’s Terra Dos Celtas Tell Me Everything at Coatakinti. A beautiful 3 year old red girl, well boned, good dip and rise on the topline and high sickle tail. Very attractive head with clean eyes, well shown. Presented in first class condition. Moved out well around the ring.

1. Bragg’s Ch Loopangs Back in Business. RBB RCC Another really lovely example of the breed. I can understand how she got her title. There is nothing at all not to like about this girl. High tailset, good for bone, lovely outline standing. Dip and rise. She has an exquisite head with small curled ears, dark muzzle, dark almond eyes, good bite and tongue colour. She was handled superbly by her young handler. Moved well around the ring.

2. Grimshaw’s Sharpuggles Pamela Pumpkin. 3 year old girl of quality. I really was spoilt for choice with the bitches who entered under me. Square in outline, well proportioned feminine head, harsh coat, good front assembly, stood with correct dip and rise in outline. Showed well for the handler and moved well around the ring.

1. Wilkins Wanmei Miss Sunlight. Litter sister to my bitch CC winner and with all the qualities her sister had. Not such a great proportioned head but having that really short horsecoat, good topline with dip and rise, cat like feet, good ears and eyes and the darkest of pigment both in the mouth and nails. She reminded me of my old horsecoat Ginny. Showed well and moved well.
