Bichon Frise
I always enjoy judging this wonderful breed. Today I found quite a difference in type with some, for me, being a little too short in leg and longer than ideal in back. Coat texture and pigmentation on the whole was good.
Rear angulation on some concerned me being far too over angulated which in turn affected the action going away.
Fronts in general were good, although there were a handful that were too straight in forehand angulation and some whose feet turned unacceptably out, even though this is well hidden by coat. Again, in turn, this affected front action.
Topline and tailsets were in the main good.
Then we come to heads. There is such a wide diversity in this area. The standard is quite specific when it states Ratio of muzzle length to skull length 3:5 on a head of the correct width and length, lines drawn between the outer corners of the eyes and nose will create a near equilateral triangle. Whole head in balance with body. Some I found heavy in back skull with short muzzles and a handful that had muzzles of near equal proportions to the skull. There is no way you can get the desired equilateral triangle with these proportions. Interestingly, those who were heavier in back skull tended to have a harder expression too.
It was a hot day, and I was pleased that we were judged before the real heat of the day kicked in and so all put on a good show. Thank you for your entries, it was a pleasure to judge your dogs as I truly appreciate the work that goes in when putting a Bichon into the ring.
Veteran D/B
1: Jaimens Petrichor (Mr D Parkinson), 9-year-old who belies her age and is in the most wonderful condition. She has the prettiest of heads and expressions. Balanced in outline and holds a firm topline. Her coat for her age is exemplary and beautifully presented. Moved out so soundly. BV
2: Rusmar Dezigner Kisses with Junanger (Mr G & Mrs J Gallagher), 7-year-old girl in super condition, she is good for size and has a coat of correct texture. Not quite the head and expression of 1 but she put her feet in the right place on the move.
Dogs
Minor Puppy
1: Limartine Stand and Stare (Mrs L A Mault), was very taken with this extremely promising 6-month-old with an attitude to cherish who was apparently at his first show. He is pleasing in head properties, and his shape is good. Super coat for his age well presented. On the move he is already very accomplished and holds his outline which really draws you to him. The future is very bright for this young man and although I considered him for higher honours today, I felt that time will only be to his benefit.
2: Delbrupar Barnyard Boogie (Mr D Parkinson),7-month-old and pleases for type. His coat is yet to finish, and he just needs to fill out a tad in frame. On the move he scores and holds an impressive outline. Once mature in body he will be a contender for sure.
Puppy
1: Wattlemeade Just Walter (Mrs A Robinson), 9-month-old and very mature for his age. He has a wonderful coat texture which is very well presented. Decent to go over and has good pigmentation. Moved out well. Just not quite the excitement today of the Minor Puppy.
2: Robin Hood I Can Dream (Miss V.j Crawford), 9 month and still very raw. Super pigmentation and sweet in temperament. He is a little upright in shoulder and could be a tad shorter in back. Coat texture good but presentation just needs to be perfected a little. Moved out ok.
Junior
1: Anneymar Jamaican Me Jive (Ms M & Mr D Stokes & Parkinson), 14-month-old and balanced in outline with a good length of leg. Super in forehand and a decent neck held proudly. Good topline and balanced for angulation behind. Good depth to chest. Super coat for texture and very well presented. Moved out holding his outline and putting his feet in the right place.
Yearling
1: Anneymar Jamaican Me Jive (Ms M & Mr D Stokes & Parkinson)
Limit
1: Lovjen Angel of Fire avec Melpink (Mrs M Johnstone), very smart young dog of type, size and balance. His head and expression are a delight with super pigmentation. Decent neck into firm topline and a good forehand. Has depth to chest and is balanced behind. Kept his outline on the move.
2: Luka Songbird (Miss V.j Crawford), well pigmented and sound. He is a little heavy in head for me and could be a smidge shorter. Coat texture good.
Open
This was a super class, and personal preferences would change the order on more than one occasion. All 4 have qualities to admire.
1: Ch Pamplona Rumour Has It (Mr R & Mr M Smith & Coad),The class was headed by this super male who was bang on form today. His presentation was simply a masterclass and his coat texture wonderful. He is all male but in no way coarse. His head proportions are good, and he has a decent expression. My only wish was that his nose pigment could have been a smidge stronger. His static balance is superb being the correct shape, a super forehand, proud neck and wonderful topline and tailset. He is balanced behind without being over angulated. On the move he held his shape so well, puts his feet very much in the right place and flowed around the ring. CC & BOB and delighted to see him shortlisted ion the group.
2; Pamplona Protocol (Mr M Coad), without doubt the best head and expression here today. This boy was very close up and I see he won his well-deserved title at the club show that followed. Again, beautifully presented and a wonderful texture to his coat. Has an excellent neck and forehand for angulation and a strong topline. Another who was balanced in hindquarter without exaggeration. Today for me I just preferred the smidge more length of leg of the winner and his complete balance of outline. On the move, he has a superb side gait, but there were just a couple of moments when he lost his outline, and this was the decider. RCC
3: Ch Wolimorb Top Gun JW (Miss J Bromilow)
Special beginner
1: Luka Songbird (Miss V.j Crawford)
Bitches
Puppy
1: Petit Ami's Countin' On A Miracle Bowiechons (Imp Nor) (Mrs D Carr), very promising 11-month-old who has huge potential. Loved her head and expression and she is super to go over on the table. Presented beautifully she puts her feet in the right place. Future star.
Junior
1: Louisianna Can’t Tame Her (Miss G P Stafford), super young bitch of exceptional style. Another who was beautifully presented and coat of wonderful texture. She has fantastic pigmentation. On the move she has a very eye-catching outline using herself so well. She is on the smaller side of the size bracket and for perfection would possibly just want a tad more length of leg. But she is certainly champion quality, and I won’t disagree when she does. RCC
2: Yuran White Ginger Snap (Mrs C Treanor), similar in type and another very well presented. She is good to go over with very little to change She moved out on the right track using herself in profile and keeping an outline. Just not as clean going away today but she could easily carry a title.
3: Rusmar April Forget Me Not (Mrs D Russell)
Yearling
1: Rusmar April Forget Me Not (Mrs D Russell), 3rd in the good junior class. She is classic for type and her head and expression are quite delightful. Just needs to settle going away and finish in body and coat.
2: Blancazorte Never Say Never to Honeyvale (Mrs K Marshall), similar in type and she is balanced in outline. Her coat texture needs to mature but she is sound on the move and kept her outline.
Limit
1: Wolimorb A Star Is Born (Miss J Bromilow), decent bitch for size and shape. Excellent pigmentation and beautifully presented coat of correct texture. Would prefer a tidier mouth and a softer expression but she is a decent one.
2: Thusia-Sa-Gal Hascikova for Magstarai (Imp Svk) (Mrs C S Osborne), pleasing for type and a delightful expression. She has a great coat well presented and she moved out on the right track but lack the positivity of the winner or the finish.
Open
1: Ch Pamplona Nina Simone (Mr M Coad). Textbook outline on this young lady and so wonderful to go over on the table. Her forehand is superb; she has a decent neck into strong topline and excellent tail set. Her head and expression are delightful, and she has super pigment. On the move she is steady, precise and holds her outline. Her coat was well presented and a wonderful texture. BCC. Close call for BOB but felt the DCC just had that edge on presence.
