Pointers

My sincere thanks go to the Gundog Society of Wales for the invitation and the opportunity to award CCs in Pointers for the first time. My thanks also extend to the exhibitors for providing a quality and thought-provoking entry on a cold Wednesday in October. It was a deeply rewarding experience and one I will not forget.

I was pleased to find a number of exhibits displaying true Pointer qualities, with pleasing outlines and sound movement. That said, although every measure was taken by the Society to ensure the comfort of both dogs and exhibitors, it was still very chilly inside the show-ground buildings. I do feel that some of the dogs would have shone more in a slightly warmer environment, as we all know how sensitive the Pointer breed can be.

I must also thank my steward on the day for keeping me on track with timings at every stage and ensuring that everything ran smoothly and efficiently, particularly as the club show was running simultaneously.

Minor Puppy dog (3/0)

1st- Martin’s SUNHOUSE QUINTESSENTIAL

Six-month-old black and white dog. Very much a baby, as expected, and clearly enjoyed his time in the ring. Pleasing head with a kind eye and expression. Good length of neck, with forequarters showing enough depth for his age. Clean in outline, giving a pleasant overall shape. Slightly bouncy on the move, but when he settled into his stride the makings are certainly there. Just preferred his overall flow in outline. Pleased to award BPD.

2nd- Oneill’s TENSHILLINGS HELLO STRANGER

9-month-old black and white dog. Slightly different in type to the first, with a broader head and skull. A really well-made boy with good, solid bone. Nicely placed shoulders, showing plenty of depth and width of chest. Strong and compact through the body with a sufficiently short loin. Again a little bouncy on the move at times, but once settled into his stride he moved freely and easily.

See 2nd Minor Puppy

2nd- Siddle’s & Mazzeo’s WILCHRIMANE CEREAL KILLER

11-month-old black and white boy of a finer type. Nicely proportioned head with an alert expression. Front assembly needs to tighten slightly, but with age and added body this should come. On the move he carried his shape well, showing correct tail action.

Junior Dog (7/2)

1st- Pearson’s LADYHAWKE DESERT ORCHID

16 month old lemon and white male. Would prefer slightly more refined head but still gave a gentle expression. Solid dog all through in fit hard condition. Shoulders well placed with corresponding return of forearm. Ribs well sprung back to nicely coupled loin. Balanced in angles before and aft. Made a nice shape in profile and held that on the move.

2nd Baker & Swan’s MATTIBOO MILLION LOVE SONGS

17 month old black and white boy. Heavier set than 1st but still had good proportions. Strong masculine head springing from well backed shoulders. Good depth to chest and well boned all through. Topline was level and well held with nicely muscled hind quarters. On move he covered the ground but was just a little untidy in front coming towards.

Yearling Dog (7/3)

1st Wilcox’s HARVESTS LADE FIRE AND ICE THROUGH MERYNJEN JW

23 month old orange and white. An honest well made youngster. Head of good proportions, leather thin ears and nicely shaped and pigmented eyes, giving for an intelligent expression. His neck was strong and slightly arched from clean shoulders. Liked his good oval bone. Nicely balanced angles which allowed him to move freely. Felt he was slightly tucked under today which made his topline fall away slightly but that probably wasn’t helped by the chilly conditions.

Novice Dog (6/2)

1st Feichtinger’s BERSEYDALE POKER FACE (ATC BB54379MLT)

A outstanding 2 yr old black and white dog. Well what can I say he is everything I was hoping to find. He oozes type and style. His head was of excellent proportions with plenty of work yet not overdone and still retained that gentle but intelligent expression. Absolutely loved his balanced construction. Strong, clean, well arched neck into the best of fronts - plenty of depth, width and heart room. Superb return of forearm, ribcage was well sprung and backed to nicely coupled and strong loin. Rear quarters were firm, in line and well muscled. His clean outline smoothly flowed from neck through his top-line to the tip of his tail. Was a pleasure to get my hands on and go over. His movement certainly did not disappoint and again was pleasure to watch - powerful yet elegant while covering the ground with near perfect footfall. I’m sure he could have run around the ring all day with ease. Couldn’t deny him the DCC - and pleased to hear he gained his2nd CC at the club show later on in the day. Good luck on the third

2nd Millets’s LAVETO REMEMBER WHEN

19-month-old black and white dog. I liked his shape and bone. His head is well balanced with plenty of work to it, though I would prefer a slightly larger eye. He has a clean, well-sprung, long neck flowing into well-laid shoulders. Firm through the body with a strong topline and a correctly positioned tail set. I liked his angles both fore and aft, which give him a lovely outline in profile. Movement was slightly erratic in front.

Post Graduate Dog (6/0)

1st Marsh’s ALOZIA ZEALANDIA FOR RATCHDA

2 year old liver and white boy, Loved his old fashioned type. Head of good proportions with nicely shaped eyes and ears with just enough masculinity about it . Well constructed all through, showing a clean neck flowing smoothly into well-laid shoulders. Strongly muscled throughout with tight, firm skin. On the move he showed good reach and drive with pleasing fluidity. A smart dog, free from exaggeration, with nothing overdone. Pleased to award him the RCC.

2nd Webster’s JONEVA JUST GOES TO SHOW AT ERRYTAR

Another two-year-old boy, orange and white, and of a different type. He has everything in the right places but just needs to mature and body up a little, which I’m sure will come with time. He has a beautifully constructed head with the kindest of eyes and expression. Well made through the neck and shoulders, with a firm, well-held topline flowing into a correctly positioned tail set. He moved out well once settled.

Limit Dog (8/0)

3 year old orange and white male. Pleasing head with nicely shaped and pigmented eyes. Well made all through. Forelegs straight, nicely laid shoulders with plenty width and depth to chest. Forelegs well boned sitting on nice oval feet. Ribs well sprung back to a nicely coupled loin which enabled him to hold and firm topline with a perfectly position tail set. 1st Matthew’s SONHAM JUST A PRETTY BELLE (AI) JW

14-month-old liver and white bitch. Pretty but classic head with sufficient work to it. Nice type and well made throughout. Clean in outline with nothing overdone. Moderately balanced in angulation fore and aft. Ribs still need to spring, but this should come with maturity. A powerful little mover, covering the ground well.

2nd Stilgoe’s & Fox’s TEISGOL ROSE CAMPION JW

Another attractive type of a slightly different mould to 1st but has everything you want in a promising youngster. 17 month old o/w bitch. Sweet head with neat flews. Clean through neck and shoulders. Nicely boned and angled through the fore. Needs to strengthen in the hind slightly which will enable her to hold a firmer topline on the move.

Yearling Bitch

1st Wilkinson’s FERNDEL SAPPHIRE MIST OVER STOCKFELL

19-month-old black and white bitch.Soft, expressive and feminine head with kind eye; level planes and neat flews. Nicely constructed through the forequarters, with correct neck length, well-laid shoulders and good brisket. Strong, straight forelegs leading to well-knit feet. Good spring to her ribs considering her age flowing into a slightly arched loin. Would prefer a little more strength in hindquarters, though she makes the most of what she has. Clean and positive in movement, striding out freely with no fuss. Considered for the RCC in the challenge; however, she became slightly unsettled, which affected the Tidiness of her movement.

2nd Matthew’s SONHAM JUST GOOD FRIENDS (AI)

14-month-old liver and white bitch. Sweet enough head, though the eyes are a shade lighter than my preference. Good length of neck flowing into decent shoulders. Forechest developing nicely and should fill once she fully settles into her maturity. Well bodied with a pleasing shape and overall balance, showing nice flow to her profile. On the move she just needs time to settle a little more in front.

2nd Anderson’s DALEDANCER FRANCES MULLEN

9-month-old black and white bitch with a pretty, feminine head. She has straight forelegs and nicely shaped feet. Well proportioned, with good length of body. She needs time to mature and develop, but looks one for the future and should come into her own further down the line.

Post Graduate Bitch

1st Klaiber’s HAWKFIELD SCANDALOUS

Nicely made 4-year-old orange and white bitch who immediately caught my eye for her overall balance and pleasing outline. Would not want her any bigger or longer, though she is very much in proportion. Attractive head with a pleasing shape to skull and sufficient work. Clean, long neck flowing into well-laid shoulders. Forechest and brisket are well developed, giving good depth. Forelegs straight and firm with slightly sloping pasterns. Well bodied with a good spring of rib. Hindquarters well let down, showing plenty of strength and muscle. Held her shape on the move, going cleanly with nothing out of place.

2nd Gate’s SHARNPHILLY DIZZY BLONDE AT LINOSA

19-month-old orange and white bitch who certainly catches the eye with her lovely type. Plenty of work in her head with sufficient femininity. Presents a clean outline through the neck into well-laid shoulders. Holds a firm topline with strong loins leading to an excellent tail set. Hindquarters are well conditioned with nicely turned stifles. I liked her smart underline with the ideal amount of tuck-up. Chest still needs to fill slightly but she has time on her side. Moved out well, soundly.

Limit bitch

1st Guy’s CAROFEL IF I HAD WINGS JW

Pretty 3-year-old orange and white bitch with a soft, expressive head. Dark, almond-shaped eyes and good balance to foreface and skull. Feminine throughout. Nicely shaped neck and shoulders, free from heaviness. Well-developed forechest, with forelegs, pasterns, and feet just as you would wish to see. Excellent topline flowing into a nicely shaped tail. Rear quarters show sufficient strength, with hocks well let down; would prefer a touch more turn of stifle, but she makes the most of what she has. Could not fault her on the move, covering the ground well.

2nd Wilkinson’s STOCKSFELL SHOCKWAVE

Four-year-old black and white bitch. Slightly plainer in head, though still well proportioned, with skull and foreface slightly longer. She has a long, strong neck flowing into adequately placed shoulders. A bitch of good substance, with strong oval bone. Good depth of brisket and well-sprung ribs. Her topline was firm and well held, with the tail carried just off the back. I would not want her any longer in loin, though this is easily forgiven in a bitch. She has a strong, well-angled hindquarter, which enabled her to move with a pleasing, driving action.

Open bitch

1st Hinton’s SH CH FLEURFIELD BLACK CAVIAR

A classy 3-year-old black and white bitch who presented a perfectly proportioned head with a beautiful soft expression, complemented by shapely eyes, well-set ears and correct flews. A long, reaching neck flows into clean, beautifully laid-back shoulders. She is extremely well put together through the forequarters, displaying excellent depth and heart room. She has good substance and bone while remaining elegant and feminine. Athletically shaped throughout, with a well-sprung ribcage carried well back to strong loins. Her topline flows effortlessly from her head to the tip of her bee-sting tail, accentuating her classic soft curves.Powerful, well-aligned hindquarters enable her to move around the ring with effortless reach and drive time and time again. A pleasure to watch on the move. Pleased to award BCC and BOB.

2nd Matthew’s SONHAM CHASING RAINBOWS

6-year-old black and white bitch. Heavier set and not quite possessing the curves of the first, but nevertheless a very well-constructed bitch. She presents a pleasing, solid head with a gentle expression. Good length of neck flowing into well-placed shoulders. Strong through the forequarters with sufficient depth of brisket and correct angulation. A clean, firmly held topline leads to a nicely tapered tail. The hindquarters show good expanse of first and second thigh, with rear angulation corresponding well to the fore. She covered the ground easily on the move, although she did occasionally throw her front legs out.

Champion Bitch

1st Rossiter & Fewster’s SH CH/IR SH CH JONEVA JUST A KISS ShCEx OSW CW’25

3½-year-old, orange and white bitch. Another from the top shelf. She possesses all the classic qualities one would expect of a Pointer. Soft, expressive head with beautifully dark eyes, soft flews, and good length of foreface. Long, crest shaped neck flowing cleanly into a good lay of shoulder. Adequate depth of brisket and forechest with elbows neatly tucked in. Nicely shaped oval bone and feet. Strong through the body and loins with ribs well sprung and carried well back. Extremely well balanced in angulation both fore and aft, with sufficient muscle and strength in her hindquarters. Moved cleanly and precisely. Considered her strongly for top honours, but ultimately preferred the driving action of the CC winner in the challenge. Pleased to award RCC

2nd Philo’s SH CH TENSHILLINGS THE WANDERER

Another top-quality bitch whom I have admired previously. A 5-year-old orange and white, presenting a slightly different head shape, yet still retaining femininity and a gentle, pleasing expression. She has a long, elegant neck flowing into strong withers. The forequarters show ample depth and heart room, with firm, resilient forelegs, although I would prefer slightly more length and slope to the pasterns. She has a shapely underline and a clean topline, which together give her the desired series of curves. The hindquarters are adequately muscled, well turned, with hocks well let down. Neat and controlled on the move carrying her tail correctly throughout.

Veteran Bitch

1st Welch, Maber & Hazeltine’s SHARNPHILLY TOGGI WITH HOOKWOOD JW

Spritely 7-year-old black and white bitch, very much the spring chicken of the class. Sweet enough head with a gentle, kind expression. Nicely bodied and well muscled throughout. On the move she showed plenty of fluidity, demonstrating that she still has what it takes to cover the ground.

2nd Hewitt’s SH CH DROVEBOUROUGH MISS MARPLE

10-year-old liver and white of beautiful type, just beginning to show her age. She presents a lovely, typey head with a soft, flowing outline. Moderate in angulation throughout, she is well balanced and used this to roll back the years, moving with power and purpose.
