I have had an interest in the breed since the 1980s when I had the privilege of owning BPIS at the inaugural Affenpinscher Club show, a dog who went on to win BOB at Crufts the first year they were classified at Crufts! It was a real privilege to judge Affenpinschers at Boston DCS and I would like to thank the committee for the invitation and the exhibitors for their entry and sporting spirit. I was presented with a depth of quality across the classes, and I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to assess dogs so clearly cherished and well prepared. Temperaments were sound throughout, which is so important in a breed known for its keen intelligence and naturally inquisitive nature. Presentation overall was good, with many shown in harsh, well-textured coats and in fit condition. Movement was generally sound, and I was pleased to see several exhibits displaying the typical light-footed, confident stride. Thank you once again for allowing me the opportunity to spend time with this delightful breed - it was a day to remember.

Minor Puppy Dog (1,0)

1ST Elemsatce Zeus The Lion (Mrs T Eaton)

A raw youngster, as one would expect at this tender age, but showing much promise. He has a pleasing head of correct proportions, with dark, well-set eyes giving the desired monkey-like expression. Good underjaw and chin tuck-up, already evident. Moved out with confidence and purpose, showing positive rear drive. Slightly long in body at present, but this is typical at this stage and should settle as he matures and his frame tightens. BPD

Standing alone in the class but a worthy winner on merit. Presents a correct, compact and square outline with well-balanced proportions. Pleasing head with a dark, expressive eye and good bite, complemented by a strong underjaw giving the desired turn up of chin. Harsh coat of good texture developing well. Level topline with a short, straight back and well-sprung ribs. Rear quarters well placed beneath the body, contributing to his light, effortless movement.

Post Graduate Dog (3, 0)

1ST Guereza Goody Goody Yum Yum (Mrs A & Mr D Panton)

A very smart, compact male with excellent overall proportions and balance. His nicely domed forehead and well-defined stop frame a head of real character, with dark eyes full of typical Affenpinscher mischief—contributing to that essential monkey-like expression. Correct length of back, straight front, and well-sprung ribs leading to a slight tuck-up at the loin. Moved out with purpose and correct gait, maintaining his shape on the move. Pleased to award him the Reserve CC - surprised to find him still in Post Graduate, as he has the makings of a strong contender in higher classes.

2ND Riogaioch King of Kings at Tteswood JW (Ms D P Dowsett)

Similar in type to the class winner, with a lively, self-assured attitude that suits the breed well. Pleasing head with correct proportions and just the right amount of head furnishings to frame it nicely. Eye could be a shade darker to enhance expression, but overall effect remains typical. Short, straight neck flows cleanly into well-set shoulders. Compact, square outline with a firm, level topline and slight tuck-up at the loin. Rear quarters well placed under the body, allowing for balanced, confident movement with good carriage throughout.

3RD Carmichan Impromptu (Mrs C K Mumby)

Limit Dog (4, 0)

1ST Faehat Trilby (Mrs F Currie)

A lovely, honest Affenpinscher with much to admire. Not the biggest of males, but masculine and well-proportioned throughout. Attractive head with dark, sparkling eyes well set to give that bright, alert expression so typical of the breed. Framed with loose, untrimmed head furnishings that complete the picture. Straight front, well-sprung ribs, slight tuck-up at the loin and a well-balanced rear. Moved out steadily with confidence and composure.

2ND Yorcrechi Has A Dream with Carmichan JW (Mrs C K Mumby)

Another typical male, slightly heavier set than the class winner but still well within standard. Possesses a lovely head with a short, blunt muzzle and good turn-up of chin, giving the desired strength and character. Short, upright neck leads into a well-balanced front and rear, with a compact, sturdy frame. Level topline, good depth of chest, and defined tuck-up. Shown in good condition and presented with that unmistakably cheeky Affenpinscher attitude. Just lacked the precision and fluidity in movement today to place higher.

Minor Puppy Bitch (3, 0)

1ST Afterglow Alma’s Not Normal for Pinicio (Messrs D & T Santoriello & Isherwood)

This young lady caught my eye the moment she entered the ring—oozing presence without exaggeration, she demanded attention and gave me goosebumps. Utterly feminine, with a super head and the most mischievous, monkey-like expression. Dark, well-set eyes of correct shape and neat ears complete the picture. Short, straight neck flows into a well-constructed front and nicely sprung ribs. Compact in body with a short loin and straight, well-placed rear. Moved with the typical high-stepping gait in perfect sync with her handler. Coat of good harsh texture and well presented. Thrilled to award her Best Puppy in Breed and even more delighted to see her take Puppy Group 2—surely one with a very bright future.

2ND Elmsatce Here Is Lady Hera (Mr D Eaton)

Litter sister to my Best Puppy Dog and very much of a similar type. Like her brother, she’s understandably raw at this early stage but shows promise. Feminine head with a sweet expression and a pleasing overall pattern. Slightly rangier than the class winner and a little longer in back at present, but time is on her side to mature and develop more balance. Wasn’t entirely at ease on the move today, unsettled by the flapping tent in the wind, but once she settled, she showed sound, steady movement.

1ST Datiro Gibbonchase (Mr D Hick)

A very smart young lady who appeals greatly for type and balance. Presents a compact, square outline with a straight front and rear well set under the body, contributing to her overall stability. Tail well set and carried confidently on the move, which she did with ease and style.

2ND Datiro Forgibbon Fruit for Scapafield (Mrs J F Wiggins)

Litter sister to the class winner and very similar in overall type. She shows much promise, with a lovely, typical monkey-like expression—created by a well-proportioned head, correct muzzle length, and prominent chin. Short, straight neck carried proudly, flowing into correctly placed shoulders. Today she gave way to her sister, who had that bit more substance and finish, but with maturity, I expect this to come. A quality youngster.

Dark eyes and correct bite with just the right turn-up of chin. Compact, well-proportioned body with well-sprung ribs and good depth of chest. Moved out with a typical, light-footed strut. On checking the catalogue, I noted she shares the same sire as the class winner, and the family resemblance is clear. A lovely, breed-typical head with an appealing, expressive look and a pleasing square outline to her body. Neat, compact feet and a correct, harsh-textured coat, well presented. Moved out with that unmistakable blend of comical elegance that defines the Affenpinscher. A quality girl who showed well.

An 8-year-old feminine bitch who oozed ring presence and attitude—her tail never stopped wagging, and she clearly enjoyed every moment. I was delighted to learn she is the grandmother of my BCC winner—no doubt where that ‘look at me’ presence comes from. Appealing expression full of typical Affenpinscher mischief. Soundly constructed with good bone, balanced front and rear angulation, and a rear set well under the body. Moved out with confidence and style, a true credit to her breeder and owner. BVB and BVIB

2ND Pretty Woman at Darksprite (Ms J & Ms L Atkinson & Clarke)
