CHIHUAHUA (SMOOTH COAT)

I would like to thank the Smoothcoat Chihuahua Club for inviting me to judge their Championship Show. It is always an honour to officiate at a breed club event. My thanks also go to my capable stewards, who kept everything running smoothly throughout the day.

Overall, I found dentition to be in a better place. Whether this improvement is due to the breed being on Breed Watch, or because exhibitors who entered under me know how strongly I value correct dentition as both an exhibitor and a judge, is hard to say—but it was encouraging to see.

The recent addition of excessively short muzzles to Breed Watch must now be factored into our decisions when placing dogs. An excessively short muzzle can compromise breathing, so it is important that both judges and breeders take this seriously. We are, after all, the custodians of the breed’s future.

My main concern today was a worrying tendency toward very pointed muzzles. The breed standard calls for a slightly pointed muzzle, yet several exhibits had an almost foxy expression. Many also lacked sufficient underjaw, which in turn affects the positioning of the teeth; in some cases, the jaw was so narrow that correct 6/6 dentition simply wasn’t possible. I have also noticed a trend of judges commenting favourably on pointed muzzles as though this were correct. It is not—the standard is clear that the muzzle should be only slightly pointed.

Veteran Dog - (2 Enteries) Abs 1

1St Sandra Stanghurst -Stanghurst Antonio – Smart pale red veteran who is so eager to please his handler. He has a classic headpiece with a super apple-domed skull and well‑flaring ears, which he used to advantage. Defined stop. He is carrying a little mature weight around his neck and shoulders, which can make him appear a touch stuffy at first glance, but once hands-on he proves to be well balanced. Correct depth of chest, good topline, correct tailset and carriage. Super angulation, nicely balanced throughout, and he moves soundly in both directions.

Class MPD (2 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: SLAVINEC, Mrs Susan Charonchi Cuban Lynx –.A very smart and pretty young man who was keen to please his handler. His head is correct, with the desired large, round eye and a nice stop, paired with the correct length of muzzle. He has large, flaring ears which he uses at all times. He carried himself well, moving soundly in both directions while maintaining a straight topline. He just needs to mature in chest, which will come with age. Correct tailset and carriage.

2n : INCERTI, Mrs Ann Jahneemahs Fools Gold At Perlanera – This cream youngster is a little rangy at the moment. He was a touch reticent and simply needs more socialising. Pleasing head, with a correct eye and a defined stop; muzzle is on the longer side. Correct ears. He is a little longer in body than I prefer. When he uses his tail, it is carried correctly. Good rear angulation. On the move he is sound; the handler just needs to encourage him more.

Class PD (3 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: TAYLOR, Ms Lesley Arkoschi Don't Stop Me Now – This blue fawn youngster has so many attributes; for me, he is one of those dogs that simply has it all. He truly came alive in the challenge—had anyone been videoing, they would have seen my eye drawn to him time and again. He has one of those dreamy heads that shout Chihuahua: a beautiful apple‑domed skull, large flaring ears correctly placed and used at all times, a lovely round eye, defined stop and correct length of muzzle. He has a lovely mouth with enough underjaw, and that elusive saucy expression that is so hard to describe.

He has a good arch to his neck, well‑laid shoulders, enough depth of chest, a correct front, and a lovely body. Super rear angulation. His flat, furry tail is carried correctly. He is a joy to watch on the move, maintaining a pleasing profile at all times. He has so much presence. He is one I will watch, as I believe he has it all.

2nd: MAGRI, Mr J A Monicachi Money Man At Rozamie – Another smart young male, he is another that has character, he has a appealing head and expression with good apple dome, well placed ears that he uses, he has a nice eye good stop, clean muzzle correct dentition, he has a good neck well placed shoulders neat front, he has a nice depth of chest for his age level topline good tailset and carriage, he neded a bit of time to settle on the move.

3rd Neath-Coyne & Coyne Mrs & Mr Jorazan Sox it Toem with Buffrey

Class JD (2Entries) Abs: 0

1st Mrs Crewe Anadeia Nallion at Dreamcrewes –.A smart cream fawn. He has the correct apple‑domed skull with a nicely expressive eye, a well‑defined stop and the correct amount of muzzle. Well‑placed ears, which he uses at all times. He has a reasonable length of neck leading into a good, straight front. He carries himself well in profile; I would just like a touch more rear angulation. Very attentive to his handler.

2nd Mrs Burrows Anadeia Nrdhanar at Lauloura – Cream youngster of a nice size. He has the correct apple dome with a good eye and a defined stop. He has just about the right length of muzzle and good ear placement, correctly positioned when alert. He has a good body and chest, with a straight front when standing. He carries himself well in profile, though he was a little erratic at times coming and going. Good tailset and carriage.

Class ND (2Entries) Abs: 0

1st Shakespeare Mr -Paulawilchi Poliver Twist – This black, tan and white male is on the smaller side, but his breed type is second to none. I loved his head and expression. He has such a classic head with the correct apple dome, a good defined stop, nice large round lustrous eyes and the correct muzzle length. His ears are high set and he uses them constantly. He is balanced throughout with a lovely straight topline. Correct tailset and carriage, with just enough angulation. Very smart when he settles on the move.

2nd Incerti Mrs - Perlanera Echo Echo - A red male who is again a little larger in frame. He has a more masculine head with a nice dome, a defined stop and the correct length of muzzle. Large ears. He is a little lacking in depth of chest. He moves well, though in profile he can lose his outline. On the stance he is a touch bum‑high. Correct tailset.

Class PGD (2 Entries) Abs: 1

1st -BURROWS, Mrs Amanda Anadeia Eowyn At Lauloura JW - A very smart and attractive red and white male, balanced throughout. He has a good expression with the correct skull, a lovely dark expressive eye and a well‑defined stop. Correct length of muzzle. Well‑placed flaring ears, which he uses at all times. He has just the right amount of neck leading into good shoulders and a nice straight front. Level topline with correct tailset. Reasonable rear angulation. He moves well both coming and going, and is certainly a super showman.

Class MidLimit (3 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: FOTHERGILL, Mrs D Diamonchi Italian Stallion – I loved this youngster from afar; he is so well put together and on the stance he really draws the eye. His head is classic, with a beautiful apple dome and well‑placed ears that he uses at all times. He has a defined stop and a clean muzzle of correct length, with a correct mouth. Lovely arched neck, good shoulder placement and a nice straight front. His topline is straight as a die when standing. He has lovely rear angulation with good muscle tone, and a lovely flat furry tail with correct tailset and carriage. He has a lovely body. On the move he is sound both coming and going; the ring size meant that at times he could not fully get into his stride and as a result he lost his shape occasionally.

2nd: Humphreys Mrs L Amarantos Theo - pale cream, slightly smaller than one, he has a pleasing head and expression with a round eye, he has a good stop, with the correct length of muzzle, he has nice flaring ears that he uses, he has a nice length of neck, he has good shoulder placement, he has a nice straight topline, he is very attentive to handler, on the move he is sound both coming and going.

Class LD (6 Entries) Abs: 2

1st: Stading MR Toltechi’s Dante Le Poete JW – This young man has so many good attributes; if I were being picky, I would like him a tad smaller. He is a black, tan and white male in excellent condition throughout. He has such a classic headpiece—truly dreamy to look at—with the correct apple dome, nice large flaring ears, the correct round eye, a good defined stop and the correct length of muzzle. Good mouth. He has a lovely arched neck leading into well‑placed shoulders, the correct depth of chest and a lovely straight topline. Good rear angulation. His tailset is correct with a flat furry tail. He carries himself with real deportment, and once he settles on the move he presents himself beautifully.

2nd Murray Mrs F A - Donatello Secret of Angels at Davixity (imp SVK) - Smaller than one, this red sable and white male has many beautiful attributes. He has such a pretty head and expression, with the correct apple‑domed skull, a well‑defined stop and the correct muzzle length. Well‑placed ears, which he uses. He has a nice straight front and a good depth of chest. Correct rear angulation. He carries himself well on the move, maintaining a pleasing shape in profile

1st: Mrs A Ch Jorazan Quincy Quirky Sox Jw – I really liked this smart cream male, he is an ideal size, he is a real showman, he has an appealing head and expression, he has a nice apple dome, with well placed ears which he uses at all times, he has a lovely dark expressive eyes, he has the correct defined stop, his muzzle is clean and the correct length, good mouth and dentition. On the stance he stands four square at time, he has a lovely body with the correct depth of chest, he has a good straight topline with a lovely tailset and carriage, he has good rear angulation with nice muscle tone throughout. He moves soundly both coming and going, keeping a lovely profile at all times. He truly wants to please and never stopped showing at all times.

2nd Poyner Ms - Anadeia Ovation For Mikichi JW - This young man is another who wants to please. He is a nicely sized male, slightly longer in body. He has a nice head with a good dark round eye, a defined stop and a clean muzzle. Well‑placed ears, which he uses. He has a good length of neck leading into correct shoulders, a good straight topline and a good flat furry tail carried correctly. Good rear angulation and a good chest. He moves with style and carries himself well both coming and going, just needing to settle at times.

1st Humphreys Mrs - Amarantos Cassini – I have always liked this bitch from the time I first saw her as a young puppy at a seminar; she is one I have even used as a demonstrator in my breed talks. She is such an honest bitch. She has a nice apple‑domed skull with well‑placed flaring ears, which she uses at all times. Defined stop, correct length of clean muzzle and correct dentition. She has a nice arched neck leading into good shoulders, a good depth of chest and a level topline. Tailset is correct, with good rear angulation. She moves so well both coming and going, keeping a lovely shape in profile. She so wants to please her handler and was my Best Veteran in Show

1st: MAGRI, Mr J A Misty Meadow's Jennie Kim Rozamie (imp Ita) – I loved this ultra‑feminine youngster; she has so much promise. She has such a pretty head and expression—one of the best around at present, I would say. She has a lovely apple‑domed skull with well‑placed ears, which she uses at all times. She has the correct defined stop and a clean muzzle of the correct length, with a good mouth and dentition. At present she looks a little rangy, but as she develops I am sure she will balance out. She has correct shoulder placement, a good topline and lovely rear angulation. Nice flat furry tail, correctly set. She moves soundly when she settles. She is a bit of a diva at the moment, but I am sure her future is golden.

2nd SLAVINEC, Mrs Susan Charonchi Queen Of Swing: - Slightly larger throughout than one, she is an ideal dual‑purpose bitch. Another who is a little rangy at present, but as a minor puppy she simply needs time. She has a pretty expression, a nice apple‑domed skull and well‑placed ears. Defined stop, nice dark round eye and a clean muzzle. She has a good length of neck leading into correct shoulder placement and a nice front. She still needs to develop in chest, but I am sure that will come with maturity. Nice rear angulation and a correct tailset. She moves well, though she just lost her topline in profile

3rd: HOBBS, Mr Jordon Charonchi Miss Goldfire

1st: HALLS, Mrs A Jodeschi Sox Appeal At Jorazan - This is an ideal‑sized pale red bitch. She is such a happy soul who so wants to please her handler and never let up showing. She stands four‑square at all times. She has a nice apple‑domed skull with well‑placed ears that she uses, a round expressive eye and a defined stop. She has a good length of muzzle and good dentition. She has just enough neck, well‑placed shoulders and a nice straight front. Her topline is correct on the move. She moves well both coming and going, and her tailset and carriage are correct.

2nd: OBRINGER, Mrs G Yue De Petit Roi Mojito Chiaffie A blue fawn bitch of lovely size. She has a really beautiful expression, with a lovely apple‑domed skull and well‑placed flaring ears which she uses at all times. She has soulful eyes with a nicely defined stop. Her muzzle is correct, though I wouldn’t want it any shorter. She has a lovely arched neck with good shoulder placement, a lovely deep chest and a good body. Nice rear angulation. Her tailset and carriage are correct. She moves well both coming and going.

3rd: GINGER Ms J Jodeschi Glamour Puss

Class JB (3 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: FOTHERGILL, Mrs D Diamonchi La Dolcie Vita – Another bitch that is so honest. She is one that any kennel would love to have as part of their future breeding. She is such a character and had me smiling, especially on her first walk around—she didn’t seem to understand the words “complete a circle”; I think she thought it was an up‑and‑down. She has the correct apple dome, with a correct ear set. Nice defined stop and the correct length of muzzle. She has a lovely length of neck and a correct front. She moves soundly both coming and going, with good rear angulation. Tailset is correct. Her breed type won her this class.

2nd: HALLS, Mrs A Jorazan Talia Toffifi Sox – half sister to puppy bitch winner, she is a similar size, she has a good apple dome, she has a nice eye, with correct defined stop, her muzzle is correct length, she has a nice depth of chest, good rear angulation, she has correct flat furry tail, which is correct tailset and carriage she moves well.

1st HUMPREYS Mrs L - Amarantos Oriana – this young bitch is an ideal size, she has a nice apple dome skull, she has well placed flaring ears, she has a defined stop, she has the correct length of muzzle, she is balanced with just enough neck, she has a good straight topine, with nice rear angulation, she has a good depth of chest, lovely rear angulation, she moved well well settled

She has a nice round expressive eye, a correctly defined stop and a clean muzzle of correct length. She has good dentition. Shoulder placement is good, her topline is correct, and she has a lovely flat furry tail, correctly carried. She has a lovely arched neck and carries herself so well in profile, moving soundly both coming and going. She never stopped showing., res bitch cc

2nd Incerti Mrs A M - Perlanera Tinzy Strider – Smart red bitch who has an ultra pretty head, she has a really nice apple domed skull, would prefer her ear set to be higher, she has a nice lustrous round eye, with nice defined stop, her muzzle is clean, she has just enough neck, she has a lovely body and chest, she has a nice straight front, good level topline, would prefer a bit more angulation, she is carrying quiet a bit of weight with means that she looks a bit stuffy, losing a bit would give her a better outline especially in profile.

1st: FATHER Mrs A Gestavo Party Lines with Okajem – This bitch is a nice dual‑purpose type with some brilliant qualities. Her handler simply needs to have a little more confidence in her; I did consider her for higher honours today, but she just lost out in the challenge. She has a nice apple‑domed skull with well‑placed ears which, when she uses them, give her the correct expression. She has nice round eyes, a well‑defined stop, the correct length of muzzle and a correct mouth. She has a lovely arched neck leading into well‑placed shoulders, a beautiful straight front and a level topline. When she stands, she stands four‑square at all times. Good tailset and carriage, with good rear angulation. On the move she carries herself well, maintaining a nice shape in profile

2nd: STADING Mrs L Stadmeyer Jesslyn JW – smart blue fawn bitch she has a really pleasing head and expression with a nice apple dome, well placed flaring ears, good defined stop clean muzzle, good dentition nice eye, she has the correct length of neck, with good shoulders, neat straight front, good rear angulation, tailset is carried correctly, she has a nice body and depth of chest she moves well, stands four square at all times.

1st: FOTHERGILL, Mrs D Ch Diamonchi Miss Beautiful JW –This pale red bitch never stopped showing. She entered the ring with attitude, and on the first go‑around she moved briskly without losing her shape. She stands four‑square at all times. She has a lovely apple‑domed skull with well‑placed flaring ears that she uses at all times, and the most endearing head and expression. Lovely eye with a defined stop, and a muzzle of correct length with spot‑on dentition. She has a lovely flat furry tail, correctly carried, and enough rear angulation. She is so sound on the move both coming and going. My Bitch CC and Reserve Best in Show.

2nd: Dodd Mrs H Anadeia Gingerbread – Slightly larger than one, this cream bitch is an ideal size. She has the correct apple‑domed skull with good flaring ears, which she uses at all times. Defined stop and a clean muzzle of correct length. She has a nice arched neck leading into well‑placed shoulders and a nice straight front. She has a lovely body with good depth of chest and a level topline that she maintains at all times. She is so attentive to her handler and moves with real style.
