Scottish Border Collie Club

I would like to thank the officers and committee of The Scottish Border Collie Club for inviting me to judge both Dog and Bitch C.C.’s, it truly is an honour, I had a very enjoyable day.

A big thank you to my two super stewards, John Robertson and Lynn Lawrie, for doing a fantastic job with their very efficient running of the ring.

We were indoors in a good size ring. In many classes the placings could easily change on another day. Thank you to all the exhibitors for the opportunity to judge your dogs.

General thoughts – Overall there was quite a variation in type, particularly in the males. The temperaments were really good. Mouths and teeth were good. The dogs presented were in lovely clean condition, a few were out of coat but that is to be expected, and in general the dogs were fit and shown well.

5 month old baby of really nice size and outline for his age. Good head, good eye shape and dark eye. Good length of neck with nice front and hind angulation, very good topline and tail set. Moved well.

Class 2. Baby Puppy Bitch (1 entry, 1 absentee)

1st C. Askey PIECE OF HAPPINESS TORNADO AT PETALNOTE

A promising 7 month old puppy of good size and shape. Nice head and ear carriage, lovely dark eye. Very nice length of neck. Front angulation ok, very good stifle angulation. Nice length of tail. Neat feet and hocks. Moved nicely once he settled.

2nd C. Sloan INVERSTAG TENNESSEE WHISKY

6 months old, another promising youngster. Very nice head and expression. Dark eye and very good ear set. Neck a little shorter than 1, compact body shape with very good front and hind angulation.

Crabbing while moving away but nice steady gait going around the ring when settled.

8 months old. Lovely head and expression. Very good angulation front and rear, a little high on his hindquarters at the moment. Nice steady mover going around the ring.

14 months old, lovely masculine head, dark eye, correct ear set and using his ears well. Very good length of neck into lovely shoulders. Nice firm topline, good depth of chest and very good hind angulation. Tail a little short. Sound out and back and moved well around the ring.

2nd M. Jowers LANGAMAY SUNSET ON BARLEY

17 months old. Nice head and pleasing expression. Eye colour correct for his coat colour and nice ear carriage. Very good length of neck with good angulation front and rear and very good length of tail. He seemed a bit unsure of himself on the move.

Class 6. Yearling Dog (4 entries, 1 withdrawn)

21 months old. Beautiful head and expression, correct ear set and using his ears well. Good eye shape, dark colour. Nice length of neck with good shoulders, front feet turning out slightly when stood. Lovely topline, with very good hind angulation and nice length of tail. Moved well around the ring.

2nd P.B. Ward BLACKGOLD BASIL

23 months old. Nice head and lovely dark eye. Very good length of neck with good shoulder angles and very good stifle angulation. Lovely firm topline both in stance and on the move. Sound out and back, moved nicely around the ring but I would like to see a little more drive.

2 years old. Lovely head and kind expression, using his ears well and lovely dark eye of correct shape. Good length of neck. Shoulder angulation is ok, rear angulation very good. Very good topline. Sound coming and going, moved smoothly around the ring.

2nd A. Durie SYANNE RIGHT FOR MR EDITION

2 years old. Very nice head and expression and very nice ear carriage and dark eye. Nice length of neck. Front angulation is ok, hind angulation is good. Body a little short coupled. Crabbing going out and back on the move today.

2 years old. Lovely masculine head with well set ears which he uses really well and nice dark eye. Good length of neck with very good shoulder, firm topline both in stand and on the move. Well set tail and very good bend of stifle. Nice feet and good hocks. Moved very well in all directions.

22 months old medium sized dog. Another lovely masculine head with pleasing expression. Very nice ear carriage, dark eye of correct shape. Good reach of neck, and good front and hind angulation. Very good length of tail. Moved soundly out and back and around the ring.

3 years old. A dark dog of medium sized, with lovely masculine head. Correct ear carriage, and dark eye of correct shape. Good reach of neck into very good shoulders and good depth of chest.

Firm topline, slightly sloping. Well moulded croup, good length of tail well set. Excellent stifle angulation, strong hocks and lovely tight feet. Moves soundly in all directions and with ease going around the ring.

3 years old. Lovely head and expression, with correct ear set and nice dark eye. Nice length of neck into good shoulders. Front feet turning out slightly. Nice firm topline, very good hind angulation. Moves well out and back, would like a bit more reach and drive going around the ring.

5 yrs old. A dog who catches the eye both standing and on the move. He has matured into a handsome dog since I last judged him. Medium sized male with a lovely masculine head, dark eyes of correct shape and alert expression. Very nice length of neck, with excellent angulation front and rear, good depth of chest. Firm level topline which he holds really well on the move. Sound out and back, and moves with such power around the ring with a lovely low action.

7 years old. Another dog that I have judged before and again impressed me. Lovely head with kind expression, with correct dark eye. Beautiful shape when stood, very good shoulders and neck, strong topline and nicely sloping croup, excellent hind angulation. Sound in all directions and holds a lovely shape going around the ring. Just pipped on movement for the top placing by 1.

Very good length of neck with excellent shoulders, good depth of chest, good firm topline both in stand and on the move. Good length of tail and excellent stifle angulation, strong hocks. Moves soundly in all directions with lovely steady gait going around the ring. Pushed hard in the Dog challenge to secure the Res. Dog C.C.

8 months old. Another very promising youngster. Litter sister to 1 and very similar in shape. Head a little finer than 1. Nice dark eye of correct shape, good length of neck with nice front and hind angulation. Neat feet, very good tail set. She too moved very well in all directions.

2 years old. Really nice head and feminine expression. Well set ears, eye colour good and correct shape. Very nice neck with excellent front angulation, firm level topline and very good hind angulation. Moved at a lovely steady gait around the ring.

3 years old. Pretty head and kind expression. Good ear set, although she didn’t want to use her ears, nice dark eye. Good length of neck, very good front and hind angulation with lovely topline which she holds well on the move. Moved well in all directions.

2 years old. A beautiful bitch of good size, everything in proportion, no exaggeration, lovely clean flowing lines. She has a lovely feminine head, great ear set and carriage, and correct eye colour and shape. Super length of neck into excellent shoulders and good depth of chest. Lovely firm topline, graceful sweep over croup, correct tail set and length, excellent hind angulation, neat feet and hocks. Sound moving out and back. You can see she just wants to motor! Her handler had to work hard to keep her calm, and it paid off, she came into her own going around the ring with beautiful low head, plenty of reach and drive, covering the ground efficiently.  I was delighted to hear later that this was her 3rd and crowning C.C., congratulations.

Excellent hind angulation and strong hocks. Moved soundly in all directions, another who holds a beautiful shape going around the ring with low action that flows, very close between 1 & 2 today. One to watch in the future.
