Boston & District Canine Society
Thank you to the Officers & Committee of the Boston & District Canine Society for the invitation to judge at their extremely well-run show. This was my first visit to the new venue and it really is excellent; my ring was large, grass ultra short and the general layout of the show was super. I was ably assisted by two excellent stewards who kept everything running smoothly, allowing me to finish judging in good time. My biggest thanks goes to the exhibitors, for bringing their lovely Whippets for me to judge. I was extremely pleased with my entry, both numerically and in quality, particularly as it was a Friday right in the middle of show season when shows are running weekly. This was my favourite CC appointment to date; I was delighted with my principle winners and felt that I had a real choice in many of the classes, particularly the females. I can genuinely say that there were some very nice girls that had to go without a card.
I was looking for a Whippet that had the desired outline, displaying a series of curves and to display excellent balance. A Whippet should not be exaggerated and there were a number with far too much rear angulation and too long in body; sloping down from the shoulders with no curves or rise. Our standard states movement should be ‘true coming and going’. I really do think this needs further attention from breeders. There were several exhibits that I liked very much when going over them on the table and many of them had good profile movement; however, I was then left disappointed with the movement on the up and back and subsequently they were placed down the line. As always, front construction was variable, but I was able to find the desired return of upper arm in this entry. However, it is probably something else that should feature on our improvement lists as breeders. With the girls in particular, size is important to me; they must look feminine and elegant. Generally I found that condition was good and I didn’t see the number of mouth faults that I had done at my 2022 appointment. Whilst weather the conditions were generally warm and favourable, there were periods of high winds and some Whippets weren’t quite feeling it, meaning that on another day places could have been different.
In an entry of this quality I was able to find exhibits that ticked all my main boxes; classic outline and type, super front construction and correct, sound Whippet movement.

1ST Bowdonia No Way Jose at Runforest (Miss E Schofield)
At a few days off 9 months, this brindle boy was understandably more together than some of the younger exhibits in the class, with movement accurate in all directions. He has a handsome head with correct oval eyes and a good strength of underjaw. He scored highly in cleanness of shoulder and generally felt smooth under the hand throughout. Good shape to underline, with definite tuck up and correct proportion of rib to loin. Just needs to develop in topline, which was the deciding factor in the challenge for BPIB.
2ND Silkridge Jingle My Bells (Miss J E Doherty)
Attractive 6 month old brindle / white boy who I felt has the ideal amount of bone / substance, with the correct frame to develop into. He has an elegant neck and another with good clean shoulders. His overall outline and shape is pleasing for age, preferring the topline of this boy to 1. He was a little unsettled on the move, but could see that there is plenty of drive from the rear and good front extension.

2nd Flerrow Watergrove Wonders (Mrs L Fleming)
Almost 12-month-old brindle dog who is mature for his age and shown in excellent muscular condition. Pleasing overall shape, with super depth of chest and good spring of rib. Moderately angled fore and aft. An unexaggerated, honest dog who moved soundly enough. 1 just that bit more refined and smooth under the hand.

This was quite a difficult class to judge, with several exhibits vying for 1stst place but for different reasons!
1st Ardencote Keep Dreaming (Mrs J P Wood)
16 month old fawn dog of classic type and ideal size, who is moderate throughout without exaggeration. Good overall outline, scoring particularly well in curvy underline. He has a quality coat and skin, correct pasterns, well let down hocks and stands on neat feet. Not a flashy mover but none the less, sound; a very honest dog.
2nd Collooney Huckleberry (Mrs V & Mrs N Coulter & Craig)
13 month old fawn/w parti who was together for his age. One of the best front constructions in the entry in terms of return of upper arm and layback of shoulder, which unsurprisingly gave him a lot of reach in front on the move. Excellent depth of chest, with a broad, well muscled back. Typical head and expression with good, rose shaped ear. Just a bit too much rear angulation for me or would have been my winner.

1st Whitesquall Superiore (Lord J & Mrs S L Titt)
A lot to like about this very attractive brindle dog who got better throughout the day, the more he settled. He has a super outline, with the correct rise over the loin and a curvy under with defined tuck up. Front assembly is pleasing with decent return of upper arm and clean shoulders. Very attractive head & correct ears leading to elegant neck. Good turn of stifle with well let down hocks. Overall presents a balanced picture and once settled, moved soundly.
2nd Dalerafenn River of Dreams (Ms E & Mrs J Salkeld & Graham)
Fawn boy, excellent for breed type and quality, classic head with beautiful coat and skin and the correct bladed bone.Another with a curvy outline with a gentle rise over loin and corresponding underline with a good tuck up. Not the front construction of 1 and subsequently not as fluid moving.

1st Silkridge Black Caviar (Mrs C & Mr K Perkins & Van Der Schaaf)
A very smart looking 15-month-old black/white dog, who epitomises the correct combination of muscular power and elegance, with a super overall outline and shape. He has a handsome head, leading to a long elegant neck. His front assembly is top-draw with a good return of upper arm and layback of shoulder. He has the correct curves to both top and underline, with an excellent depth of chest and well ribbed. This is particularly pleasing to find in a male. He is foot perfect on the move, so sound on the up and back, has real drive from the rear and a lovely low reach in front. To top it off, shown in excellent muscular condition, with a gleaming coat. Still only a baby and I am sure that with another few months maturity the big green and white cards will come. RCC, pushing the CC winner hard.
2nd Shulune Thrills N' Spills for Edenwhip (Mr G & Mr J & Ms R Poole & Winkley-Balmer & Winkley)
I really liked this 14-month-old brindle boy, who I found to be moderate and unexaggerated throughout. He was genuinely unlucky to meet 1. in this class as he was in my top handful of male exhibits. Again appealed for overall balance and shape, for me he had the ideal rib to loin ratio, was not over-long and subsequently had the desired curves. Another good front with clean shoulders, although not quite the return of upper arm as 1. Classic head with good ears, pasterns well sprung. Moved well in all directions, albeit slightly close behind. A quality exhibit.

1st 3287 - Reffton Kiri (Imp Esp) (Mr M D & Mrs A D Rankine & Levell)
2-year-old red fawn/white parti dog who is super for size and moderate throughout. I do feel the cliché of ‘has to be handled to be appreciated’ really does apply here; stacked he can tense up and subsequently drop his quarters somewhat. On closer inspection he is super smooth under the hand, flowing from head to tail and with very clean shoulders, has the correct bladed bone and flat muscle. He has a handsome head, with the correct alert expression. On the move I appreciated his correct proportions and soundness.
2nd Ranveli Royal Duke of Dawnsafon JW (Miss E N Higginbottom)
Another 2-year-old fawn dog, stronger throughout than 1although not too big. He too had an attractive head and expression, alert and in tune with his handler. He was a bit unsettled on the move today (busy show with handlers running between rings). Well sprung ribs and a strong loin. It was his better overall outline and curves that earned his place here over 3.

1st Zoraden Master Baker JW (Miss A Morland)
Classic fawn dog who appealed for his overall quality and breed type, with all the features that are usually found with this; short, close coat, fine ears, correct bladed bone and neat feet. Moderate (correct) rear and nice short hocks. He made it into my final three in the challenge and did so due to his excellent front construction with the desired return of upper arm, correct spring of pastern and good depth to chest, along with having that overall graceful, curvy outline and being free from exaggerations. Moved soundly, but not quite the reach and drive as the CC and RCC winners.
2nd Emandoria Dazzling Diplomat for Creme Anglaise (Mr J W & Mr K Akerboom & Van Der Schaaf)
18-month-old brindle dog quite different in type to 1 but again with plenty to like. Presented in the absolute best of condition; perfect muscle tone and a gleaming short coat. His elegant neck runs into smooth shoulders. Well filled in front, again good pasterns and displaying strength across his back and loin.Preferred the more moderate rear of 1.

3 classy boys heading this class.
1st Ch Cobyco Catch Your Eye (Mrs L Yacoby-Wright)
A 2.5-year-old fawn dog of exceptional type and quality, really demonstrating that all important balance of muscular powercombined with a graceful, true Whippet outline. Yes, in an ideal world I would choose for him to be a shade smaller, but in no way is he heavy or coarse. The overall balance and shape of this boy is spot on, with the ideal amount of rise to topline and a corresponding curvy underline with definite tuck-up. He maintains this super shape on the move. His front construction is excellent, with very good layback of shoulder and return of upper arm, pasterns have the ideal amount of spring. Chest is deep and well filled with plenty of heart room, excellent depth to brisket without being overdone, and well-muscled back. Good strength of second thigh, with a bend of stifle that creates the ideal amount of rear angulation. Picture completed by a classic head, with fine ears and a good, strong underjaw and a beautifully fine coat. On the move he is super sound on the up and back and in profile has a free, easy stride. A classy dog, well deserving of his title. CC.
2nd Zoraden Macchiato JW (Miss C Soffe)
Shaded red-fawn dog who is moderate and unexaggerated throughout. He is absolutely spot on for size and flows smoothly under the hand with a good neck into shoulder. I particularly liked his curvy underline and correct rear, that had just the right amount of angulation. He has excellent muscle tone and condition without being at all bulky. Pasterns have the desired spring to them and he stands on neat feet. Another really sound mover and it was this accuracy on the up and back that secured his place over 3rd. Considered for the RCC.

Fawn dog who is of the correct size and substance, whilst maintaining masculinity. He is good in body, having the correct ribbing to loin proportions, meaning that he is not over-long. Back is well muscled, giving the desired impression of power and ability to do the job Whippets were intended for. Another with a correct, curvy underline. Preferred the more refined head of 1.

1st Ch Wheelspin Silver Shadow among Silkdance JW VW (Ms C Price)
This is the third time I have judged this fawn boy at a Championship show and this was the best he has gone. He is a text book example of a quality, typey Whippet; beautiful fine coat, neat ears and feet, correct bladed bone and flows under your hand from nose to tail. He has the cleanest example of neck into well laid-back shoulder and excellent return of upper arm. Moving happily today, displaying his sound movement. Genuinely unlucky to meet the VB/RBCC winner as he is a super example of the breed.
2nd Creme Anglaise's One More Knight at Scarletfair (Imp Nld) VW (Miss H & Miss H Wayman)
Another quality fawn/white boy who is ideal for size and moderate and unexaggerated throughout. He also has clean neck into shoulder, super coat and stands on neat feet. Excellent depth of chest with a well-ribbed body and strong loin. Topped off with a quality head, with the correct alert expression.

A handsome brindle dog of just 13 months, with an attractive head. He has a good overall balance to him, although topline still developing. Good length of neck that runs smoothly into clean shoulders, with good depth to his chest and front fill, particularly for his age. Moved well in profile, driving from the rear with a long low stride in front. Preferred the better return of upper arm on 1.

1st Kierpark Moonlight Shadow among Silkdance JW (Ms C Price)
Brindle and white trim dog of 3 years old. He has a good front assembly with decent return of upper arm and depth to chest. Good spring of pastern and correct feet. A little longer and flatter than I wanted. He moved well enough in profile, but would like him to be a bit more positive moving away.
2nd Blues and Tooze (Mrs D Bowsher)
Smart blue and white dog who is pleasing for size. He is more moderate throughout than 1 and has a more classic, curvy outline and nothing exaggerated. Good bend of stifle with well let down hocks. However, I preferred the front assembly on 1 and would like more fill in front on this boy. Unfortunately he appeared to be carrying a slight knock, making him a bit stiff moving behind; ultimately costing him the win here and higher places in previous classes.

1st Silkridge Mistletoe Smooch (Mrs C & Mr K Perkins & Van Der Schaaf)
Red fawn and white baby of just 6.5 months, who is very feminine and looking like she will finish an ideal size but still with good substance. Good overall proportions, with everything there to develop a classic outline. I liked her rib to loin ratio; this isn’t a girl who is going to be too long and flat. She is already displaying a good depth to chest with plenty of heart room. Moved very well, particularly for one so young; great freedom of action in profile and sound up and back. She was just dropping her rear quarters on the stack, I suspect because of the gusty winds – on another day would have been my BPIB.
2nd Cobyco Capture The Moment (Mrs L Yacoby-Wright)
A pretty brindle girl of 7.5 months. She had an elegant neck into clean shoulders and a good enough return of upper arm. Pasterns are correct with desired spring and feet nice and neat. Her rear angulation is moderate (correct) and hocks are well let down. A little longer in body than 1 and subsequently not quite as curvy on top. She moved soundly.

1st Crosscop Temptation to Supeta (Mrs L & Mr G & Mrs F & Mrs S Morris & Waddell & Spademan & Mycroft)
Brindle girl of just over 11 months. She has an extremely attractive head and super expression. An overall mature puppy who was very together for her age; both in her physical development and her polished performance. Very nice to go over, flowing under the hand with clean shoulders, correct flat muscle and gentle curves. Moderately angulated on the front and rear. She moved positively in all directions. I would just prefer some more fill in front but on the day I felt she had the better overall balance to take BPIB.
2nd Lolani Tennessee Princess (Miss S Lain)
Fawn girl of 10 months. Very mature for age with good body and depth of chest. She is well ribbed and has a well-muscled back with strong loin. I preferred her front construction to 1’s, having the better return of upper arm and layback of shoulder. However, there was just a bit too much of her in terms of size for me, albeit she is a well-constructed Whippet who moves soundly in all directions.

1st Crème Anglaise’s Entourage with Silkridge (Mrs C & Mr K Perkins & Van Der Schaaf)
A smart brindle/white girl of 15 months, a very attractive head with alert expression and a ‘look at me’ ring presence. One of the better examples of front construction in the entry, having the desired return of upper arm and layback of shoulder. She has a very curvy outline, with a sweeping tuck-up and corresponding rise in her topline. Excelled on the move in all directions; a low, long stride in front and powerful drive from behind, as well as being extremely sound on the up and back. I just preferred the croup on my ‘final three’ bitches, otherwise this one was right up there.
2nd Ardencote Dance A Dream at Chipperlake (Messrs M & A J Cahill & Timberlake)
Fawn/white 17 month old girl of beautiful breed type. She has all the hallmarks of quality; fine coat and skin, neat feet, correct bladed bone and the right flat muscle tone. Initially a little tense but as the class went on she relaxed more and more and her attributes shined through. I liked that she is moderate throughout, curvy, with nothing overdone. On the table smooth and flowing under the hand. She moved very soundly on the up and back but not quite the profile movement of the winner. A very honest Whippet with a lot to like.

A close decision between my first two, liking both for different reasons.
1st Ch Collooney Celeste (Mr D G & Mrs Y L Short)
Brindle girl of 23 months, who was shown in the best of condition. Attractive head, correct shaped eye and alert expression. I really liked going over her on the table; a super close coat and flowed well with a clean neck into shoulder. She has an excellent depth of chest with plenty of heart room and a well-muscled back. She naturally stands over plenty of ground and then on the move possesses the desired freedom of action and is sound both coming and going.
2nd Velandor Ballerina Baby (Mrs A Le'vell)
Quality fawn of pleasing breed type. Slightly more moderate throughout than 1 and free from exaggeration. I particularly liked her front construction; she has an excellent fill that is lacking in many, her shoulders are well laid back and return of upper arm is very good. Again the fine ears, neat feet and good coat and skin you should see in a quality Whippet. Unfortunately she was flattening on the move, slightly losing her top and underline. With slightly less weight I feel this would be a different story and she would have been one to contend for top honours.

This was a really good novice class, with several exhibits who I feel won’t be eligible to enter this class for long!
1st Tervanty Magic Dragon (Ms E A Woodward)
A lovely fawn/white girl who had just turned 12 months old. She is very together for her age, already having a really good body, depth to chest and importantly the development of the desired S-shaped curves; with her underline being particularly good. On going over her on the table I found her to be of super quality and type. Another with the smooth running neck into shoulder, with a good layback. Balanced angles front and back and topped it off with good movement in all directions. She has the potential to trouble the best as she matures further.
2nd Zoraden Naughty at Forty (Miss A Morland)
Another quality fawn of good breed type and presenting an overall moderate and balanced picture. Just 11 months old but looked ‘together’ both stacked and on the move; she was another valid contender for BPB. I slightly preferred her rear to that of 1, being a bit more moderate with the ideal amount of rear angulation and well let down hocks. She has a clean neck into shoulder but I preferred the upper arm of 1. Pasterns have the ideal spring without being weak and feet very neat.

Approaching two-year-old red fawn girl who presents that overall balanced picture and pleasing Whippet shape, I particularly liked her curvy underline. She has just the right amount of bone and substance to her whilst still maintaining her femininity. Another nice moderate rear with the correct bend of stifle and well let down hocks. Moved out well in profile, just a little close moving away.

1st Starswift Seductress (Mrs S Wignall)
Quality fawn girl who I found to be very well proportioned throughout and free from exaggeration. She has an excellent outline, her ribbing goes well back and then she has the correct length of loin. Underline in particular is super; really good depth of chest with elbows neatly tucked in, leads to a beautifully curved tuck up. Her angles front and rear match well and she has nice short hocks. Topped off with a quality coat and skin. She moved out in profile the best I have seen her go, driving well from the rear.
2nd Aarminias French Fancy at Whittimere JW (Mrs A & Mr W S Halliday & Croxford)
Black/white girl who was lovely to go over on the table, very smooth under the hand, flowing well. Her neck into shoulder is particularly clean and she has the desired flat muscle tone. Just the right amount substance and she has the desired moderate bladed bone. Her feet are well knuckled and pasterns have the correct spring. She is slightly longer cast than my winner and doesn’t quite have the return of upper arm. However, she is all Whippet with a lot to like and moved very well.

This was an excellent limit class and there were girls that I found had a lot to like about them that had to go cardless.
1st Bowdonia Sky Full of Stars JW (Ms M Thomas)
This two year old brindle/white was in my ‘final three’ female exhibits of the day; I really liked her. She is put together extremely well, starting with an excellent front assembly, having one of the best return of upper arms, super depth of chest with her elbows directly under her. For me she had the correct proportions and because she isn’t exaggerated, she never stood wrong. Her rear is unexaggerated, with correct bend of stifle and nice short hocks. On the move she was as absolutely sound as they come. She thoroughly deserved consideration for top honours and I would have been more than happy to award her a CC, however I just preferred the slightly more refined open and veteran winners. A lovely Whippet.
2nd Zoraden You Are My Universe JW (Miss A Morland)
Fawn girl of perfect size who is ultra feminine and screams breed type and quality. She has a beautiful head, with classic expression. On first inspection I thought she would be my winner. She possessed all the key attributes I was looking for; a beautiful curvy outline, free from exaggeration and a super constructed front. Really clean neck into shoulder with excellent return of upper arm. Again, well balanced front and rear angles. She is another I would be more than happy to award a CC to, but today she was not really ‘feeling it’ and a bit lack lustre on the move, albeit correct and sound. Ultimately this elevated 1 into top spot.

1st Ch Crème Anglaise's Thistle Be Perfect (Mr J W & Mr K Akerboom & Van Der Schaaf)
Exquisite brindle/white girl who was my super star. Looking back at her photos from the day made me smile; she is absolutely beautiful and really does display everything I was looking for. By this stage of the critique I hope it has been evident what attributes I was looking for but of course I will highlight all her virtues. A really well constructed front is not a common find, with only a small amount of exhibits really excelling in this department. However, what I did find is that the ones with excellent return of upper arm and fronts well under them, were the ones that tended to have the best proportions and overall balance. This girl epitomises that. She is completely free of exaggerations, moderate and balanced throughout, with a beautiful outline; everything just flows. Her rib to loin ratio was spot on for me, which again is usually synonymous with the correct curves and is clearly evident in this exhibit. Her rear is strong, with well developed second thigh, ideal bend of stifle and hocks that are well let down. The picture is completed by her beautiful head with alert expression, super fine coat and skin and perfectly neat feet. She really is a joy to watch on the move, having that long easy stride whilst driving with power from her rear; all whilst holding her topline. The icing on the cake was her attitude; she knows she’s beautiful and commands attention. A thoroughly deserved CC and BOB winner. I felt extremely proud to watch her super performance in the Group, going on to take HG2.
2nd Ch Palmik Truth About Love JW (Mr M & Ms Y Howgate & Hull)
Fawn girl of pleasing breed type and quality, with a classic head. She has a beautiful fine coat and skin and an elegantly arched neck into clean shoulders. Her chest has good depth with pleasing front fill and correct bladed bone. She is a little longer cast than 1, so not quite the shape of outline stood or on the move. Presented in excellent condition and handled to get the best from her. She moves with good freedom of action with a daisy clipping long and low stride on the front.

1st Zoraden Fifty Shades Darker JW (Mrs D Bowsher)
6.5 year old black girl who I previously gave a class win to as a puppy 6 years ago. This girl’s silhouette is classic Whippet, being the visual definition of elegance and grace of outline. She is a series of curves and has an excellent front assembly, with a particularly good return of upper arm and layback of shoulder. Overall she is moderate and unexaggerated throughout with the correct amount of bone. Moved well enough in profile.
2nd Penbriar Rocket Star of Rockatom (Miss C Soffe)
Brindle girl who was just a month off being a veteran. A little heavier throughout with not the grace of outline as 1. That said there was a lot to like about her; she is well proportioned with a front that is well enough made and a corresponding moderate rear with hocks that are well let down. Another with the correct rib to loin ratio and has correct pasterns and decent feet. She moved well and was tidier on the up and back than 1.

1STCh Lolani Tennessee Honey (Miss S Lain)
Gorgeous red fawn girl defying her 8.5 years. Approaching her on the table I was met with a beautiful head and expression, lovely fine ears and the overall impression of quality. A lot of my comments around the construction and proportions of my CC winner apply to this girl too. She too is of ideal size, completely free of exaggerations and moderate throughout. Another with the best of fronts with that hard-to-find return of upper arm, excellent lay back of shoulder, deep chest and front legs well under her. Her substance, bone and muscle tone is all spot on. Her outline and overall shape is very ‘whippety’ and a series of curves. Again, I felt her rear angulation is the ideal and she has well let down hocks. On the move she is ultra sound on the up and back and still moves very easily in profile and whilst not ‘flashy’ she is oh so correct. A very well deserved RCC winner in a lovely entry of females and BVIB.
2nd Ch Crosscop Let It Shine for Supeta JW OSW (Mrs F & Mrs L & Mr G Spademan & Morris & Waddell)
Another fawn girl defying her years, presented in excellent order and really giving a strong performance, apologies for the cliché but she really was enjoying her day out! She has a super fine, quality coat, flows smoothly under the hand and also has the correct flat muscle. She still has a lovely curvy underline and a corresponding rise over her loin. Really powered around the ring on the move, driving from behind and reaching out well in front. A worthy champion and unfortunate to meet 1, who I felt had the better front and was more accurate coming and going.

A very feminine brindle/white girl approaching 12 months of age, with an attractive head and good expression. She was lovely and smooth to go over on the table, with her long elegantly arched neck running into a clean set of shoulders. She has a curvy underline and I liked her moderate rear. Pasterns are correct and she has very neat feet. She moved well in all directions and was handled to get the best out of her.
2nd Kensesqui Moldova (Mrs L Fleming)
Dark brindle girl approaching two years old. She is good for size and has the correct amount of substance and bone. Nice topline and strength to loin. Presents an overall nicely balanced picture with matching front and rear angles. She didn’t have the profile movement of 1.

Five year old fawn/ white girl who I would describe as well constructed but I would just want a bit less of her all through. Moved steadily in each direction.
